Communism is a social, economic, and political ideology. Under a true communist system, all people are to be equal politically, economically, and socially. The people are supposed to own everything communally; from businesses, to food, and beyond. No social classes are to exist under a true communist system, as all people receive the same quality and quantity of possessions as everyone else. (Ohiohistorycentral) Democracy is a government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. Both sides came to the conclusion that each had a different vision for the future of Europe and the world. The premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, wanted to establish Communism in Eastern Europe and Asia. (Corbett, 2016)
The second Red Scare, from 1947-1957, was a fear-driven phenomenon by the growing power of the communist country of the Soviet Union. America feared that the Soviets and allies were planning to forcefully spread Communism by overthrowing democratic and capitalist institutions around the globe. The fears were not for nothing, because the Soviet Union did occupy a big portion of Eastern and Central Europe. Knowing that, government officials and the American public were afraid of a nuclear war with the Soviets. (Ohiohistorycentral.org) George Kennan, employed by the State Department in Moscow U.S. Embassy, sent a message back to Washington D.C. He said, “The Soviet leaders believed that the only way to protect the Soviet Union was to destroy ‘rival’ nations and their influence over weaker nations.” (Corbett, 2016) He came up with a plan that would counter-attack the Soviets plans of Communism with the policy of containment. This plan was executed through economic policy which helps prevent its political expansion into new areas.
