Countries such as Israel, Germany and Malaysia, have implemented a system which requires young adults to complete either a year of military service or community service. The countries each have their individual reasons. Israel sees service as a right of passage into adulthood. Germany’s hospitals and charities rely on the work and in Malaysia the year is used to promote racial harmony along with patriotism. This requirement builds the economy in each country; however, would this be beneficial for the United States? While community or military service for a year would promote individual growth, encourage young adults to give back into their community and start developing key workforce skills, it would ultimately come at too high a cost; it would degrade the value of service and dilute our military. I will address the community service requirement first in my essay, since many high schools, including Sturgeon Bay, require community service hours to graduate. Personally, I found my community service experiences highly rewarding. Before I moved to Sturgeon Bay I frequently volunteered at the Cerebral Palsy (CP) Center. Due to the fact that I had gone to daycare there as a child, I decided to volunteer at the daycare center. This is not a typical daycare because the CP Center works with a variety of children and adults with disabilities.
