“Service above self” acquires a certain meaning to me that goes beyond volunteering at a planned community service event. At face value, it could be seen as people stacking service events on their plate and piling up hours for personal interests. Though, it goes beyond that ideology entirely. To me, service above self means to help or assist others without the need of any benefit or recognition from anybody. I conduct service for the sole purpose to make a difference in the community and people’s lives, and beyond the recorded hours on a piece of paper.
The reason I am running for Vice President is that I want to obtain a larger role in this organization, instead of being the usual Interact member. Previously, I led as a Treasurer (Phi Theta Kappa) and State Secretary (SkillsUSA), and handled multiple sets of leadership procedures and duties once before. Beyond the leadership experiences, I have the drive and passion to serve for our Interact chapter. There’s that stronger motivational aura that I feel when it comes to being in Interact. Being able to serve others with a purpose and having the attributes to lead makes me a strong candidate as a VP officer for Interact.

Despite being out for a large portion of the year under excused meeting absences (SkillsUSA competition training), I attended every Interact meeting since. I did cooperate with Ashlee to update me on upcoming service events and things that went on in every meeting. In first semester, I had involved myself in WIELD day and the Waipahu Elderly Hall Interact service events. This semester, I plan to attend the Kalihi Community Work Day held on
In this regard, the most important part of service to me personally is giving back to the community. Volunteering is my way of providing service to others, it is not only effective, but it’s a good way to meet people, to learn, and to develop social skills. By helping or supporting others, I learned and used new skills in communicating with people and I have gained confidence in myself through different interactions. Providing aid to a family in need or helping out an elementary teacher is necessary, because as people it should be our natural tendencies to support one another, and bring aid when aid is due. For example, at Seven Lakes High school I created the Girls for Krause Club. It was given the name the Girls for Krause club after the Krause Center; a center in Katy that fosters girls who have been taken out of their homes due to sexual harassment, parental mistreatment or mental issues. My first visit to the Krause Center was with my youth group at church. I was so touched by all the girls at the center, and how open they were about their situation. I remember one of the girls telling me thank you, for treating her like “a regular person.” This interaction gave me the incentive to create the Krause club, because I wanted to allow other girls my age to interact with these girls and bring attention to a center that wasn’t well known in my community. Moreover, creating the Krause club has been rewarding and a way to showcase
One deciding to serve their surrounding community in an attempt to better the lives of people living in that community is one of the most selfless actions one individual person can perform. Throughout my time in high school career I committed myself to serving the broader community in order to better society whether it be me serving as Co-President of Life is Delicious or raising money for Special Olympics Connecticut by doing the Penguin Plunge.
I am applying to be the vice president of the choir program. I'm running for this office because I have been involved in choir since I was in middle school, and I want to step up and be more a part of how the organization is run, helping make this program better, and making choir more enjoyable for everyone in it. Although I've never been in a leadership position before, I feel like I would do well in this position because of my passion for choir and performing.
Service can take on a variety of definitions. Too often, a societal view of service is somehow linked with laborious work at an inconvenient time of the day or somewhat of a burden; that is the stigma associated with service from my home community at least. Throughout my semester volunteering at the People’s Bank Theatre, I have really come to enjoy the service I have partaken in. With my own personal promotion of culture, especially coming to a region of the country which would not typically be predisposed to the arts at such high caliber performance, I definitely felt a real sort of connection to the theatre which in turn made my volunteering experience meaningful.
Acts of service always created a desire in me to help make people’s lives better. People often put forth their best when
Many think that community service is just something you are forced to do for school. To me, community service is a way of giving back. I like making people feel as though they matter, and it gives me a warm feeling at the end of the day because I feel I have made a difference. I grow as a person each time I do community service. Some people do community service because they have to, but I do it because I want to. I have volunteered about 52 hours of community service in the READ program at a local elementary school on east 3rd street and ave S.
Service-Learning is a way of teaching and learning. It is a great opportunity to involve in community service activities and to apply the experience to the academic and personal development.
For it is without payment that the core meaning of selfless giving is explored. Through discovery one’s perspective on giving is personalized and sentimental aspects of one’s life is also given into their society. Although my philosophy on giving has many roots its focus is simple. What puts meaning into our actions is not necessarily our actions but our intentions with those actions. If the focus of giving back to society is for its betterment, physically giving back to society won’t have as much of impact on as giving back to society with love. And as long as the service provided is genuine, I believe giving should not be limited solely traditional acts like donating
My high school career has brought me many great opportunities, especially in the area of community service. However, our school does not require service to the community for graduation eligibility. Key Club, Future Farmers of America, and National Honors Society are a few of the organizations I was involved in that offered community service opportunities. The majority of my service opportunities in FFA were directed toward agriculture and the agricultural community I was involved with. Our officer team served food at multiple steak feeds, organized petting zoos for young children, and created scholarship opportunities for future FFA members. Because I was the president of this organization I was given the responsibility to supervise these events and establish these scholarship opportunities by applying for
It was a bright, sunny morning, the weather was nice, and the sky was beautiful, yet I was stuck volunteering for my teacher. He holds a river clean-up monthly and for some reason, I decided to wake up early to go out and help him clean the river. Honestly, I had no reason to be there but since a couple of my friends were going, I decided to go and help out also. Our local river was gross and riddled with the homeless, but my teacher’s goal was to clean up the area to help the environment and bring something beautiful back to our community. When we started cleaning, there was trash everywhere and the smell was so gross and pungent that it repulsed me. However, as time passed and trash was getting picked up, the area became cleaner and soon it looked like an entirely new place.
I hope you are doing well. As one of the members of the youth, I would like to address a concern of mine involving the youth group. Our church's mission statement is experience, equip, and severe. As a whole, I feel that the youth group is lacking in the area of service. Not only is community service important to our church, I also believe it is crucial to have our youth involved in community outreach to promote emotional and spiritual growth. I believe our youth should participate in more community outreach because it will counter selfish tendencies, allow the youth to feel helpful, and promote our church’s presence in our community.
The efficiency of service can be looked at form multiple angles. Does the motive behind service less than its effectiveness? I will be exploring just that in this paper by evaluating the net benefit to a community and its lasting impact on the individual performing mandatory versus voluntary service. I was drawn to this topic after listening to Tovia Smith’s podcast, ‘Selfish’ Giving: Does It Count If You Get In Return?. Smith interviews many professionals on their opinion on service done for personal gain. In the article, Community Service, published by the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, they define mandatory community Service as restorative justice for offenders. The Center for Justice and Reconciliation leads a reader to believe that offenders doing community service is no different than when a high school student does it for a college application. I believe that the Center for Justice and Reconciliation is correct that offenders and high school students both partake in mandatory community service but for different reasons. High school students use service to get into college while offenders use service to make amends with the community they have harmed. Both Smith and the Center for Justice and Reconciliation agree that service is good but differ on what makes it efficient. While I agree with Smith's main argument surrounding service, I believe that community service remains effective when you evaluate the motives, net benefit to community, and a lasting impact
I have made a difference in my community by volunteering for many organizations. To start, I have participated in the Lisbon Community Band and provided musical entertainment for the community to enjoy free of charge. Each year, my town band has a winter and summer concert. These concerts include a new set of songs for the community to hear. Music relaxes the mind and is believed to have certain healing properties. I have been in my town’s community band for eight years now and I plan to be a member for as long as I can. The community band is a valuable and necessary aspect of my community. I also have participated in my town’s Boy Scout Troop in the past, helping out individuals in the community, raking leaves in their yards, and performing
According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the state of Nebraska spends 61.3 million hours a year doing community service. It also take 20 hours to learn and know something very well, according to Forbes (Schawbel). With those two facts in mind, Nebraskan’s could have potentially learned 306,500 new things a year volunteering. When you 're introduced to something new, you will gain a lot experience or knowledge in that new area. Therefore, when we are spending that much time with our community, we will learn a lot about the people living in our community and test what we thought we already knew based on stereotypes. While giving yourself to your community during community service, one may find themselves further grasping, becoming a part of, and deviating norms throughout their involvement. I have taken part in a community service for many years that has taught me many things and given me insight into the community that I live in.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” The views on community service have changed throughout the years as seen by the change in views between baby boomers and millennials. Baby boomers viewed it as a mandate because if not done they would go to war but now as viewed by many this outlook has changed many believe that millennials have changed this view and view it as an open path towards a brighter future. Although many may argue that community service brings about a sense of morality it must be a free choice due to time consumption, overwhelming stress, and punishment.
