Community Teaching experience: Diabetes Diabetes is a major problem in our society today. Many people have heard about the disease; however, they do not know too much about its complications. Diabetes is a chronic, progressive and lifelong condition that affects the body’s ability to use the energy found in food (WebMD, 2016). Many new cases are confirmed every year and unfortunately, many go undiagnosed for years. Diabetes is a serious disease and need to be taking seriously. The disease can lead to many other health problems such as blindness, nerve damage and kidney diseases. The more the community understand and made aware of the seriousness of the disease, the better it can be control and or prevented. Summary of the Teaching plan The teaching focuses on diabetes. The teaching plan also lay out the signs and symptoms to watch out for. The three main types of diabetes and who is at risk for each one. The church members were given materials to learn more about the disease. We explore some of the most common myth about diabetes. The group were given the opportunity to decide if the statement was a myth or a fact. Furthermore, the community were made aware of the importance of reading food labels. Many food labels contain high amount of sugar with can add up to the calories needed per day. Additionally, the group understand that not everyone can prevent diabetes. Some people can minimize their risks by staying active and eat a healthy well-balanced diet every day. There
Diabetes is a disease that can be devastating to some families, but it is not that bad as it seems. With the correct amount of exercise and moderation, it can be maintained with several different methods. A large part of the United States population has a form of diabetes. Today, there are many treatments that improve the lives of those living with this disease. With the correct understanding, it can be manageable and change the lives of the diabetic and his/her family. Some people may think of this as a bad thing for children to have but with the proper management and exercise, it can be maintained as well as bring a family closer to one another. Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented increase in diabetic diagnoses, there are simply not enough doctors available. Educators, therefore, are and will continue to be needed to assist in this shortfall. They will teach new patients how to manage their diabetes, and assists and educate “older” patients in new, exciting technologies.

This paper explores the chronic illness Type 2 diabetes. An overview of the impacts of the disease and the population at risk s provided. As a mechanism to control and assist in the prevention of the disease an education based program called Day 1 Diabetes Prevention is proposed. Such a program would target young people that are old enough to understand the consequences of the disease but still young enough to adopt positive health practices. It is considered that through such action, the number of cases of Type 2 diabetes can be significantly decreased over time as the positive health message is absorbed, understood and applied. Such an outcome will be to the befit of individuals potentially affected as well as society as a whole.
This diabetes power point was presented at an adult community center in Queens, New York called QCP. This power point highlights the importance of educating yourself on disease and more specifically diabetes. Unlike other diseases that can be managed using only medication, diabetes requires day to day knowledge of the disease including nutrition, exercise and different levels of medication. Type II diabetes can also come on later in life based on diet and exercise or lack thereof. Therefore this power point presentation was important to help people understand how to deal with diabetes and how to prevent diabetes.
The goal is to increase the percentage of understanding of diabetes and how to live empowered with diabetes. I will conduct outreach programs in various methods to reach the people to participate in the health program. My objective is done by specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time-bound (SMART) goals. By May 31, 2018, an increase of 40% establishes one-on-one follow up education session with each individual and families through home visits or phone calls to monitor them to improve their lifestyles. By February 30, 2018, an increase of 80% distribution of brochures and with door to door interactions with the individuals in the community. By September 2018, increase 90% of people to engage in community health fair, classes, and exercise activities on diabetes and cardiovascular classes. This will introduce the individuals in social support that allow interactions with teaching and
need for increased understanding of the economic, and societal seriousness of diabetes and its complications, and of the escalating costs to individuals, families, workplaces, society and governments.
This is a diabetes case study of Mr. Charles D., a 45-year old male who is experiencing classic symptoms of hyperglycaemia. Recently divorced and living alone in a new home, Charles has complained of recent weight loss, excessive thirst, and frequent urination. He is a busy CEO for a major technological company. This case study for Charles will educate him as to what are the causes of diabetes: explain the presenting signs and symptoms emphasize the psycho-social impact to his amended life, and instruct him in the economic impact that he and millions share.
Diabetes has recently become a focal point of health care systems around the world due to its high prevalence and the severity of secondary complications caused by the disease. Over the course of my project on diabetes, I have had the opportunity to speak with a group of diabetics to understand from a patient’s perspective how diabetes is managed in a rural community. While I found that while some patients ignored treatment and refused to make any dietary changes, the majority of the patients I interviewed were well-informed and actively managing diabetes in their everyday life.

When people think of causes of death, the big names that come up are usually cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and suicide. These are all huge killers, but the underestimated, unthought-of, underdog of them all might just be diabetes. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death, with an estimated 29 million suffering from the disease and a prediction that 1 in 3 born in 2000 will develop it. In 2005, 233, 619 deaths were due to diabetes and the rate of diabetes development between 2005-2007 increased 13.5%. (CDC, National Diabetes Statistic Report, 2014) Diabetes is a serious disease that isn’t going away. It is the leading cause of blindness, end stage renal disease, and non-traumatic amputations. Diabetes can seemingly appear out of thin air, it can be genetic, it can have symptoms, it can go unnoticed for long periods of time, and as with many other life endangering diseases, it has no cure. The types of diabetes along with their medical therapies and natural preventative measures will be discussed in detail.
The effects of diabetes are nothing less than devastating. It is a disease that is affected by interdependent genetic, social, economic, cultural, and historic factors (CDC, 2011a). In the United States, nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes, and another 79 million Americans have prediabetes (CDC, 2011a). Diabetes has been associated with reducing the quality of life of people with the disease, and it also has a tremendous economic burden on our health care system. In 2007, diabetes and its complication accounted for $218 billion in direct and indirect costs in 2007 alone (Dall, et al., 2010).
Introduction Diabetes is a disease that affects many people in a community and if not diagnosed and managed properly, can lead to other comorbidities. There is help for those who are diabetic, from resources and education provided from the health care field to all organizations in the community. One organization, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) does this job. The goals, mission, funding, as well as who is helped and how they are helped, along with and all services and education pertaining to diabetes are well presented throughout the ADA website. Prevention is the better choice, but knowledge of lifestyle changes can have a great impact on managing and preventing this disease and may lower the chances of associated comorbidities.

Diabetes is a disease where the body is unable to produce or use insulin effectively. Insulin is needed for proper storage and use of carbohydrates. Without it, blood sugar levels can become too high or too low, resulting in a diabetic emergency. It affects about 7.8% of the population. The incidence of diabetes is known to increase with age. It’s the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in the US, and is the primary cause of blindness and foot and leg amputation. It is known to cause neuropathy in up to 70% of diabetic patients. Individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.
