“So, what was it like winning yesterday?” I ask, even though I am sure he has heard it a thousand times before. “ It felt great! And I think I was able to make coach Rouse proud, but I know that I can do better,” he assures me. I catch a glimmer in his eyes that I had not noticed before. I think it is hunger, he really wants that title and is willing to work hard for it. But so is everybody else, whether it is as simple as cheering his name as he crosses the finish line, or coaching him through four years of blood, sweat, and tears to get him where he is today. I think that is the key to the culture of Como Park’s track and field team, the group’s shared dedication to superb personal growth and achievement. It is not an each individual
Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Some of these skills include communication, teamwork, discipline, work ethic, dedication, leadership, and numerous more that will help them in their personal and work
The film created a connection of the people living in Barrio Logan showing the life before and after to the changes they had to go through. It was just a humble town that had all the resources the needed to feel safe. Before there was a border people would come as they pleased and enjoy their time the beautiful land to visit the community where everyone knew each other. Then the border created the first separation of the land they used to travel across so easily. Which ripped a part of the place they once knew. After time, many people left as the highway was built right on top of where their homes were built.
As a casual reader of the sports section of this newspaper, you come across many articles depicting the triumphs of local athletes. However, very rarely do these articles describe the actual athlete behind the success. Athletes come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. They range from the incredibly talented to the horribly uncoordinated. Some are great teammates while others would rather be a one man team. Certain athletes seek out attention from the people around them while others are modest and stay in the background. The fact of the matter is that there is a wide spectrum of different types of athletes that exist in this world and no two athletes are exactly the same. However, each can be put
Many people never understand the importance of team sports and activities until they have been a part of one. Being involved in a team demonstrates personal strengths can be used to grow as a team. Being a part of my soccer team, Fox Run, for seven years of my life truly changed every person on the team. Even though our team has split apart due to seniors graduating, the lessons we learned will continue to last forever. From fourth grade to eleventh, the sport through Fox Run has shown me to respect others, create lasting friendships, and persevere through the wins and losses.
“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion’.” – Muhammad Ali
“Pick up the pace guys, its meatloaf night!” Exclaimed Pleasant Grove High School track coach Bill Saunders. You could see the pain and agony that the athletes were experiencing as they made their final laps around the track in attempt to finish off that day’s workout. The mid afternoon sun was beating down on the young adults and you could see tears of sweat running from their faces. Bill Saunders has been the track coach at Pleasant Grove for four consecutive seasons now and says, “There is no greater feeling of success than seeing the smiling faces of those athletes who achieve their season goals!”
Lorena Falasco Elementary implemented a Running Club this year. Our club meets two days a week after school. We have two coaches (teachers) and parent helpers per team, which are separated by grade levels. To include community members, we invited students from our local high schools that are on the cross country team, and individuals who have participated in 5k’s and half marathons to participate in our practices, we call them our “Celebrity Runners”. The excitement from our student’s faces was priceless. It was a fantastic opportunity to get our community members involved with our school, and to interact with our student’s in a positive way. What I learned by participating in this club is that something as simple as a running club for elementary students could make such a positive and a wonderful learning experience for everyone involved (parents, teachers, students, community members). By doing so, we created a welcoming atmosphere for Lorena Falasco Elementary
Having grown up in the Tahoe Truckee area, my participation in athletics, and a multitude of other team based activities, have consumed a vast majority of my teenage life, and have aided in my finding a variety of things I am passionate about. These activities have taught me many important life skills that I am able to contribute to both the Team community and community as a whole. These competencies include a strong sense of leadership, accountability, a clear sense of self, and effective communication, all of which I utilize in my day to day life. These skills also provide me with the ability to set effective goals and accomplish them.
First walking in, one can notice a sign reading Minto Brown Island Park, but continuing down the concrete path, anyone can see calling it a “Park” is a major understatement. Vast fields of tall grass on both sides of the entrance, birds flew and nested, hidden from the prying eyes of humans and predators. Further down the path, there were parked cars, their owners playing fetch with their dogs; dozens and dozens of dogs. As far as the eye can see there were tall, perhaps ancient, trees; it greatly resembled a forest. The path diverges into two at the end of the people park, however if you were to go down the middle of the forked trail, you’d soon find yourself submerged in a lake filled with small fish and amphibian creatures. Follow the left

Coaching wrestling has been, and continues to be, one of the most meaningful and heartfelt experiences of my life. Wrestling has helped define my personal character, teaching me discipline, and enabling optimal performance under pressure and stress. I am grateful for the opportunity to pass this on to other student-athletes. The impact I have on their lives, as well as the one they have on mine, transcends the competition of sport. Simultaneously, I progress as a leader and role model, while they develop character and work ethic as young adults. I have been there for these athletes since the beginning of their high school career. Witnessing and being a part of their evolution has been an amazing experience. Whether it’s the smile on their face
An active lifestyle was enthusiastically encouraged by my parents for their three boys to support not only physical activity and growth, but a competitive spirit, and a sense of belonging with peers from my school and the community. Through hard work and practice I played at the top level for every sport that I tried out for. What I lacked in size I made up for with heart, hustle, and passion. Consequently, my personal compensation was the pride I earned through hours of practice to develop the skills needed to perform at the highest level.
Today is the first day I’m writing in my Journal. But today is definitely not my first day working here in The Congaree National park. I have worked here for many years. Although I love the smiles of the children and the curious looks of the excited people, there are some downs. But before I complain to you about the beautiful and amazing park I will show you how my day goes. As I put on my clothing I forget something….Something I forget every time. My name tag! I pick up my brown name tag and brush my fingers of my name, Louisa,. I put on my hat and right before I walk out the door, I say a little prayer “Lord, please don’t let me get eaten by an alligator, Amen”. Then I open my door and a fresh blow of crisp South Carolinian air brushes my face. As my face gets stroked by the wind I smile, until I hear a yell from my boss. I ran over to him and he says in a happy voice “You are going to take this lovely family on a tour”. All I could do at the moment was smile and say “Come this way”. My boss taps my shoulder and whispers “You can do this, you know everything about this park,it's your home”. We walk and walk till we finally get to the start of the hiking spot, I go over the boring rules and tell them to stay close. I took a deep breath and continued on with the facts. I announce this “Here at Congaree
I have been greatly impacted by Coach Segraves as he has pushed me to become a better runner and person. He takes time to focus on each of his athletes to help them achieve their goals. He tells us to strive to become the best that we can be. This has been powerful to me because it pushes me to focus on improving myself and to work hard to get there. “You can only control how much effort you give, not the talent of your competition,”
