Moral justification
In the two short stories, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe the act of murder is a persuasive element. Both stories have protagonists which exhibit narcissistic personalities, as well as, selfish rationalizations to commit murder. Intense imagery, employing macabre rudiments of death creates an excellent murder story. Authors Poe and Faulkner dynamically involve the reader giving a glimpse into a suspenseful murder crime. This paper will compare and contrast the theme, point of view, plot, and character of these stories.
The theme structure in the short story “The Cask of Amontillado,” by Edgar Allan Poe and “A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner each focus on

Faulkner begins with a gloomy, run-down Victorian home. “Only Miss Emily’s house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay.” (82). Poe’s first description of an environment is discovered midway through the story when he described the damp vaults. (537). The two authors introduce the setting differently which creates mystery and entices a suspenseful plot. Faulkner uses a cadre characters whereas Poe restricts himself to two. By doing this, Faulkner’s protagonist is defined through the interpretation of the characters.
A final point to compare and contrast between “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe are the characters. Comparing the stories is relatively easy. These stories have main characters who plan a murder and both get away with it. Emily, in “A Rose for Emily”, murders Homer Barron, her lover. She believes that his death prevents him from leaving her. Homer’s rotting body is kept alongside her. His body remains beside Emily until he death.
In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Montresor believes his friend Fortunato, has insulted him. Declaring the injury as the last, he plots murder. Under false pretenses, Montresor leaves Fortunato in chains behind a brick wall to
Today I’ll be comparing the Narration of “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allen Poe. Edgar Allen Poe is the author of many great pieces of literature, using his narrators to explain situations that are going on in their life. The narrators of "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Black Cat" both lead characters love for man’s inhumanity to man and animals through horrific murders.
The two short stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” share similar and different characteristics. Both written by Edgar Allen Poe, these stories involve murder, possibly insane narrators, and weak victims. They both also contain the theory of madness and obsession. Although these stories share many similar aspects, they differ in murder justification, murder execution, and final outcome of each situation.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Scarlet Ibis” dark symbols and tones shape the plot, which allows man’s inhumanity to man, as a theme, to be expected. Both authors use imagery to allow readers to paint a picture of each setting in their mind. Also, each author adds in many symbols to make a concrete object into an abstract idea. In “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst symbols, imagery, and the theme of man’s inhumanity to man are used to uniquely explain each story line.
The main character in both stories are alike because both of them killed in order to fulfil their needs. In (RFE), the narrator remarks, “When her father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her; and in a way, people were glad. At last they could pity Miss Emily. Being
In William Faulkner’s short stories “A Rose for Emily” and “Barn Burning” the characters are both guilty of committing terrible crimes. However, Miss Emily in “A Rose for Emily” and Abner Snopes in “Barn Burning” are both portrayed very differently from each other. A few things to consider while reading these short stories is how each of these characters is characterized, how the author generates sympathy for these characters, and the order in which the events in these stories occur.
The story “A Rose for Emily” was written by William Faulkner. The other story I am using to compare and contrast with is “Killings” written by Andre Dubus. These stories are similar in plot and theme. Both of these stories deal with murder, love and revenge. Though, love and murder are presented in different ways in the two stories. The main character in both these stories are of the opposite sex and they are both the protagonist. “A Rose for Emily” is about a women named Emily Grierson and her mysterious life as a southern belle. While “Killings” is based on a man named Matt Fowler who commits a bad crime.
William Faulkner is an award winning novelist. He has written novels, short stories, plays, poetry, essays and screenplays. Mr. Faulkner graduated from Oxford University, as well as won the two most important awards that anyone can get for writing: Pulitzer Award and the Nobel Prize. A Rose For Emily, is a short story about a Southern women who faces the loss of her father and is criticized by her own town. In William Faulkner’s, A Rose For Emily the author approaches the story with a pathetical appeal, the tone/attitude of the story is set out to be gothic, as well as be a proud a Southerner.
Both the stories present major ideas through symbolism. Faulkner uses particular objects to link the tales with his metaphorical meaning. ¡§A Rose for Emily¡¨ does not explicitly involve a rose. Faulkner notes the rose only twice, in the title and the third paragraph from the last, ¡§¡Kthis room decked and furnished as for a bridal: upon the valance curtains of faded rose color, upon the rose-shaded lights¡K¡¨ (¡§A Rose for Emily, 129). But the significant symbolic meaning of the rose strongly affects the readers¡¦ perception of Miss Emily. It stirs the readers to sympathize with Miss Emily. Rose stands for true love, expectation and the most resplendent period of life. Miss Emily adorns her room as a bridal chamber in rose color, representing a woman who yearns for true love and dreams of a fairyland where she and her beloved can stay together forever. For years, Miss Emily¡¦s father drove away all the young men who want to date with her. Her father thwarted her to experiencing love. In her dreary existence, Homer Barron is the only bright spot, one ¡§rose¡¨. Like a wilted rose, she keeps his body, forever. It reminds her of the joy she once had in her otherwise empty
A&P by John Updike and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner are two short stories which reveal to be different, odd and even bizarre in several aspects; conversely, on the other hand, they are very similar. One similarity for John Updike, William Faulkner and many other authors, is being that they follow the three-act structure, which helps to write their story more effectively. Furthermore, in analyzing A&P and A Rose for Emily, we see that both share an “overarching” theme; however, their symbolism and conflicts are different, they still follow the three-act structure; finally, in the end, you will see which one I infer does a better job compared to the other.
"The Cask of Amontillado" is one of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest stories. In this story Poe introduces two central characters and unfolds a tale of horror and perversion. Montresor, the narrator, and Fortunato, one of Montresor's friends, are doomed to the fate of their actions and will pay the price for their pride and jealousy. One pays the price with his life and the other pays the price with living with regret for the rest of his life. Poe uses mystery, irony, and imagery to create a horrifying, deceptive, and perverse story.
The last comparison about these two narratives about tone. The tone of two narratives is very ironic. There are many ironies to be found in “A Rose for Emily.” One of the examples, when she is speaking with the Aldermen. They are trying to convince Emily to pay her taxes and she simply repeated a person’s name who has been dead for ten years. The other story “The Necklace” also have many ironical quotes. Mathilde Loisel really wants to be in the upper class society, but because she shows persistence borrowing the
Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" and William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily, both stories about murder, both character Emily and Montrose are very different, however, the different between the two murders the reason and the reaction in the atmosphere. Both they have one thing is coming witch is both committed to murder /.an example Montrose seems to be very friendly in the beginning of the story the "The Cask of Amontillado" and he did not show any contrition about murder .as we know Montrose has make sure the house is empty when Fortunato’s arrive.”
As you read through many novels, you can see the characteristics of the main character of each passage, since both characters’ act like they are young. In “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner the main character is Miss Emily Grierson and Miss Brill, which is the protagonist, from the novel “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield we can see that both main characters’ act immature. In the short story “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily is the main character. While she was growing up, her father kept her away from men who she might have a future with. After her father passed away, she kept his corpse for a couple of days.
Emily” by William Faulkner highlights the issue of revenge and showcases the outcomes of mental illness. In these stories, the main characters, Montresor and Emily, both suffer from mental illness, which causes them later on in the story to lose their sense of humanity and commit murder. Both Montresor and Emily believe that they have been wronged, and thus seek revenge on the ones who have wronged them by murdering them. Not only do they both commit murder, but also they do so by committing it through inhumane methods. Montresor murders his rival by burying him alive, and Emily by poisoning and preserving her boyfriend's dead body. Both stories “The Cask of Amontillado” and “A Rose for Emily” illustrate two mentally unstable characters who lose their sanity and commit murder, revealing how the actions of people in the upper class, which were unchecked because of their social status, result in the commission of reprehensible actions.
The story "A Rose for Emily" is one of first William Faulkner’s publications. The action of this story takes place in a time filled with social and political turmoil, when Southern came into a historical lethargy, and when its glow start faded. The elements presented in "A Rose for Emily" make reference to that time and are a tribute to Mss. Emily Graiser. A dominant tone is shown by a footprint of the past and loneliness to which was added symbolism and melancholia. The author showed us through his words issue of life, love and death, a sensitivity which gets us closer of characters' life and struggles.
