Compare And Contrast Athens And Sparta

The city-states Athens and Sparta were rivals in ancient Greece. Geographically the two were very close to each other, but they had a very different economy, cultural values, and way of governing. Both city-states had two very different ways of doing things. I will be highlighting the major differences.

Athens v.s Sparta There are many debates about what would you rather live in. The knowledge based Greek city-state of Athens, or the warlike city-state of Sparta. Sparta is better than Athens because they had an amazingly powerful army, they focused more on protecting Greece than trying to take over everything, and most importantly, they had some of the best women’s rights in ancient history.

Athens or Sparta Sparta is better than Athens because at age 7 boys are trained their entire life to work in the army therefor Sparta has a better army. Athens isn’t as good because they don’t train for the army that much. They were taught sports and Athens wasn’t nearly as much. Sparta is better than Athens because they have a better army, women had more rights, and Sparta’s army was content and only used it when need be unlike Athens always using their army to try and get more land.

Sparta had the geographic advantage above Athens. Sparta is better because, according to Document G, “The Eurotas River provided much-needed water, while the nearby plains allowed the ancient Spartans to grow all the food they needed.” Sparta was already provided with enough supplies on their own and didn’t have to trade things with other city-states. Having rivers, mountains, and rivers gave the Ancient Spartans the right environments to grow many things such as figs and wheat, the Ancient Spartans also had enough room to raise cows for meat, milk, and cheese. Another reason why Sparta has the geographic advantage is shown in Document F, which states, “Sparta thus came to control some 8,500 km² of territory making it the largest city state

     As we look back upon the two significant differences in the governmental systems of Sparta and Athens, there are also many other characteristics that distinguish the differences and similarities of these two city states. The difference in land as well as population perceives a relative historical comparison. Sparta lacked land area and was forced to seek other land in the fertile plain of Messenia. Although, if we look at the Athens, we see that they had no issues with plentiful land, as they possessed large and populous territory.

Athens was superior to Sparta, and was more sophisticated, but was it really better than Sparta? Athens was the brains of Ancient Greece, and its citizens cared about more than just their military. Athens used mathematics, science, and philosophy to build their city-state. Athens had great trading routes due to the location from the Aegean Sea, and they also had a great naval military due to the sea.

Athens and Sparta are the two famous city-states in Ancient Greece. The Athens was more superior then Sparta. The Athenians were stronger because they had a better geography, government, cultural achievements, and I would rather live in the Athens.

Introduction Athens and Sparta were two of the largest, most powerful, and most influential cities of Ancient Greece. They may have both been big and historically well revered, but their societies were structured and ruled very differently. This difference is especially true politically speaking. Athens and sparta are two different places. Athens and sparta had two different cultures that they believed in and they had two different lifestyles. Athens had a more chill and laid back lifestyle. Sparta on the other end had a very hard life and they were all about the military and how they were going to live. Sparta was very hard on themselves and there people that lived their with them.

In the passage “Athens and Sparta,” Mr. Duckworth states “Where they differed was that while Sparta had militaristic values, Athenians were democratic.” Athens and Sparta were two major city-states in Ancient Greece. Both city-states would have been decent places to live. However, Sparta would have been a better city-state to live in than Athens because Spartan women had more independence that other women in Greece, Sparta had a strong army, and Sparta was selfless.

In ancient Greece Athens and Sparta were rival city-states. They would help each other if necessary, but were both highly popular city states. Athens would have been a better place because people in Athens were educated and could choose their own career, Athens was ruled by the people, and there was more food,water, and better weather. First of all, people in Athens were educated, and allowed to choose their own career and lifestyle.

People in Athens and Sparta like any other city-states, were participating in their own day to day activities of public life. Athenians had been followed democratic government and open culture compared to Sparta which had been followed a dictatorial government and warrior society.

Between the city-states Athens and Sparta, Sparta is superior geographically. To start with, Sparta is superior because of farming. For example, Sparta farmed crops like grapes, olives, barley, and wheat. Another example is Sparta produced broad beans, chickpeas, and lentils. In fact, they had fertile soil.

You had to be a male adult Athenian citizen to take part in government. Sparta: In Sparta, any free male citizen had the right to be active in public life and government.
