From home to the woods or from home to the great blue sea lets see how these two characters compare. Brian is a teenager that has been in a plane crash in the middle of the woods on his way to his dads in Canada and now he is stranded in the middle of nowhere. His only resource is a hatchet that his mom gave him and whatever he can find in the plane. He doesn't have a lot of outdoors experience and now he will have to figure out how to make it by himself in the wild. Odysseus and Brian are alike because they both have minds that are able to be creative and get themselves out of sticky situations also to have determination to keep pushing on. My first reason why Brian and Odysseus are alike will be explained in this paragraph. My first reason
Odysseus and Everett share many similarities throughout their journeys and overcome many obstacles and didn’t quit no matter what. They show that it’s definitely hard to overcome problems and determination is also needed but it’s not impossible. The characters demonstrate their leadership potential towards others and help them throughout their
Odysseus and Percy are similar because they both are stuck with the Lotus Eaters and must help their friends escape by forcing them. Odysseus must force his men off the island, “Those
Ulysses Everett Mcgee and Odysseus are very similar in many ways; they are both Leaders, they both want to get back to their families. They can both be cunning and sharp, they are both obsessed with maintaining their pride. Everett messes with his hair and he buys hair gel and coombs and that's how he keeps his pride. Odysseus will do anything to maintain his pride, he will kill anyone or anything in his path.
Ultimately, Agamemnon and Menelaus are interested in a soldier who obeys them and their orders with no questions asked. Nonetheless, Ajax had a mind of his own leading to his actions of not following them. However, Ulysses is the complete opposite. Unlike Ajax, Ulysses was more devoted to being the best man. Ulysses fought for his country, people, and loyalty.
First of all the two main heroes of both stories, Everett and Odysseus, are similar in many different ways, one example of this is there names and their main motive. In the movie Everett’s first name is
The motivation of Odysseus and Ulysses is extremely unlike one another. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is on a journey home to restore his fame among the people of Ithica so he is not forgotten, while Ulysses has received a letter from his wife stating that she is to get married. He breaks out of prison for his family, rather than for his fame. He says to Pete and Delmar himself that there was never any treasure, he only needed help to get home to his family. To Ulysses, family comes first, while Odysseus is in it for the fame and glory. Also, the two are different due to their characterization as Odysseus is a war hero, and Ulysses is a criminal. The two men are complete opposites and are very different in the ways they behave, act, and in their general lifestyles. Odysseus was raised to be a great hero, to be remembered, but Ulysses is just a simple criminal who really likes his hair products. Odysseus is even helped by gods and goddesses such as Athena as, “They threw spears as he bade them, but Athena made them all of no effect”(227). Ulysses has no help along his journey from others, he only faces struggles throughout his entire odyssey. While the most powerful force in The Odyssey, the gods, helps Odysseus thanks to his heroism, the most powerful force in O Brother, Where Art Thou, the police, is against
There are multiple similarities and differences between the wife, children, companions, the challenges they face, and the main characters themselves. Odysseus and Everett are different in many ways but they’re also the same in the other ways. Whether or not it’s their personality, the way they act, and/or the way they treat others around them. They could be similar by the challenges they take, the people they run into, and the places the overcome. But, they both want something in particular, they both want to go home and see their families.
Jesse Jackson stated, “If you fall behind, run faster. Never give up, never surrender, and rise up against the odds.” (Brainyquote.com) this quote can be applied to real life or fiction. Jeannette, Bo, and Odysseus embody this quote in their existence. All three of these characters have situations in their lives where at least one person has put them down and are adamant that they cannot fulfill the goals that they have set for themselves. Odysseus from The Odyssey, Jeannette Walls from The Glass Castle, and Bo Brewster from Ironman are characters who, when told they can’t achieve what they are striving for, each have at least one person who sincerely believes that they can accomplish their goal.
Heroes are everywhere, no matter how small their heroic actions may be. However, what is a hero? A hero is someone who helps others without regard to themselves. A person like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, who put Tom Robinson in front of his own reputation, and was called a “black lover” in the racist community for doing the right thing. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus has done this more than once on his journey home, however he also has been selfish. Odysseus is a man who has been both heroic, like when he rescued his men from Circe, but he has also done unheroic actions, like when he didn’t tell his men about the dangerous bag of wind.
Nostos in its most simple form, means a heroes homecoming. It is a common theme used in ancient Greek literary works. Homecoming is a great deal to heroes in the ancient epics, as it is the final step to claiming their kleos (glory). Homer uses this as his main theme in his epic poem the Odyssey, as it shows the main character Odysseus yearning to return home to Ithaca after twenty years of being away. The poem portrays Odysseus’ journey home, however, during his journey he is constantly driven off course. After ten years, with the help of his main protector, the goddess Athena, Odysseus finally makes it back home to Ithaca where he reclaims his identity. Later in 19BC, Vergil who was a roman poet, uses nostos as one of the themes in his epic poem the Aeneid. The poem portrays the main character Aeneas as a dutiful hero, who has to flee his home, Troy, and is destined to found Rome (Verg. Aen.1.1). Odysseus’ and Aeneas’ nostos are both similar in the sense that they encounter some of the same sights, they leave behind woman in order to continue on with their journey and they deal with supernatural forces. On the contrary, the two heroes are completely different in their motivation. Aeneas’ reason for his journey is due to his destiny and duty to establish home for his people. Odysseus, on the other hand has different reasons as to why he longs to return home. Firstly, he wishes to return to his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus. Secondly, he tries to attain his
Heroic, Strong, Brave, Confident. A hero is these things and many more. Two heroes who are very alike are Odysseus from the Odyssey and Hercules from the Disney movie Hercules. Not only did they both battle fearsome monsters, they were both working against an angered Greek god and shared many common characteristics. Odysseus and Hercules may have been uncannily alike but in the beginning they had their differences in motive. Although towards the end their purpose became more alike than ever.
In the movie and the book Odysseus does a lot of the same thing. Odysseus is known to be a hero and to either win or lose. He usually has a victory, he is a very smart man who thinks everything through before going through with it. Victory motivates Odysseus. He wants to return home and live well in Ithaca. In the movie and book one of the things he does the
A Homeric epic hero is considered to be above a normal human being. The traits of a typical epic hero are strength, loyalty, courage, and intelligence. In fact, the Macmillan Dictionary for Students defines a hero as "one who is admired and looked up to for valor, achievements, and noble qualities" (483). Odysseus fulfills all of the requirements for an epic hero and more. He demonstrates his ability to be an articulate speaker, and his poise aids him on his journey. His endless curiosity has gotten him into dilemmas, while his superb displays of strength and cunningness have helped both him and his crew escape danger. His arrogance sets him back, but his loyalty is what drives him forward on his long and treacherous expedition. In the
Battling against the ferocious waves, Bethany struggles to become the girl she used to be just like Odysseus struggles to return home. In the Odyssey, an epic poem about a hero and his journey, Odysseus, the hero in the poem, goes on a 20 year journey to return home from war. Similarly, Bethany Hamilton, a surfer who lost an arm due to a shark attack, is also on a journey. Throughout both their journeys they face many difficult obstacles. In order to get past these obstacles, both of them have to complete heroic, even life threatening, tasks.
Homer 's Odyssey and Tennyson 's "Ulysses" have different desires and their desires lead them on contrasting quests. The hero in Homer 's depicts Odysseus as a hero in the process of completing a journey home. The portrayal of Ulysses is a hero that has already completed his journey, but he wishes to go back on another journey.
