Buddhism and Islam: similarities and differences. Buddhism is a religous and philosophy belief propagated by the Buddha, a teacher from India who lived between the 4th and 6th century before the common era. The teachings of the Buddha whose real name was Siddharwa spread through Asia and to the West after his death as it was practised by the followers.
The Buddha's teachings were based on the fact of that human existence is painful. It was also based on the ultimately dissatisfying character of human life with emphasis on finding a way to escape and attain perfection from the different lives. Buddhism also believes that the universe is a product of Karma. The Four Noble Truths are the truth of misery (dukkha), the truth that misery originates within the craving for pleasure and for being or nonbeing (samudaya), the truth that this craving can be eliminated (nirodhu), and the truth that this elimination is the result of following a methodical way or path (magga). The teachings of Muhamad are based on brotherhood and the belief of all Muslims on a common faith. The Koran is the scriptural basis of Islam and it is believed to be the words of God delivered to Muhammad by Angel Gabriel. Of the numerous doctrines in Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths are among the fundamental concepts in this religion. It begins with the notion of life is suffering (dukkha). “Suffering, as a noble truth, is this: Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, sickness is suffering, sorrow . . . pain . . . and despair are suffering . . . association with the loathed is suffering, not to get what one wants is suffering-in short suffering is the five groups of clinging objects”(Novak, 65). The Dukkha seems to possess a negative, almost unfavorable connation. However it may be viewed to something on the lines of anything temporary is suffering. Happiness, success, and even bliss attained through spiritual are dukkha.

The basic message of Islam was that there was one God who ruled over the other Gods and whose name was Allah. Muslim Prophet Muhammad was the last and greatest prophet of Allah. He believed that Allah had exposed himself in Moses and Jesus and thru the Hebrew and Christian traditions (203). The last revelations were given to him. These revelations were written down in a holy book that became the Qur 'an. The teachings of Muhammad formed the foundation for the religion of Islam. Islam means, "submission to the will of Allah". Allah was the almighty who created the world and everything in it (203). His worshipper 's were called Muslims. Islam was a way to set religious beliefs as well as a way of life. The Islamic society had a certain way in which they behave. They had their morals recorded in the Qur 'an and this served as their code of ethics and law (203). The second pillar is that regular prayers to worship Allah are required 5 times a day and a public prayer on Friday at midday. The third pillar was that money must be given to the poor and needy. Although known as The Seal of Prophets, Muslims believe that he was only a man chosen by Allah, as a messenger and teacher of living for God. Islam is a religious system that begun in the seventh century by Muhammad. In the seventh century, Muhammad claimed an angel called Gabriel visited him. During the visits by Gabriel, the angel revealed to Muhammad the words of Allah or God. The angelic visitations continued for about 23 years until Muhammad’s death.
