Most people are not aware of the differences between a daycare and a kindergarten. The truth is that there are many differences despite the few similarities between them. Here are some of the differences between them.
Programs offered
A daycare center gives developmental programs while a kindergarten school provides instructive programs for particular age groups of children. The teacher to child ratio in a daycare center varies according to the number of age groups of the children. Most of the kindergarten programs usually have one certified teacher and one assistant teacher in every class group. However, the similarity is that in both of the programs, teachers and other staff are needed so as to maintain open communication with the parents as well as to inform parents about the development and progress of their children.
Opening hours
Kindergarten classes are normally based in elementary schools and therefore they operate during the normal school hours. The programs may be scheduled to take place half the day with about three to four programs beginning in the morning or in the afternoon. Daycare centers give more extended operating hours compared to elementary schools. Some of the daycare centers give kindergarten programs with operating hours which extend beyond the usual operating hours for an elementary school.

A parent may choose to send their child to a nursery school, who cater for 2 to 5 year olds, supplying both childcare and early years education. A nursery is usually attached with a primary school or sure start centre, and provides a stepping stone for children about to start school.
Preschool – Within these settings it is normally part time or school hours split between 3 hour sessions. They are normally within community centres so have to set up and pack away. This is normally available for 2 ½ year olds to school age, but can be younger depending on the setting
Nursery schools are stand-alone schools for children aged three and four. They have their own head teacher and staff. Some are state-funded and others are privately run.
Materials and manipulatives are spread along the outside walls of the classroom and children are free to choose which type of materials they would like to work with during independent work time. You do not notice any individual desks and chairs set up in the classroom, rather a few tables and chairs grouped together. The furniture is all child size and you do not see any adult sized furniture throughout the classroom.

Licensing requirements for preschool teachers vary by state. Some states require a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and others require certification by a nationally recognized authority. The child development associate (CDA) credential which is the most common type of certification. It requires a mix of classroom training and experience working with children. This comes along with an independent of an individual’s competence. The Encyclopedia of careers and vocational guidance 11th edition shares some requirements. “In high school you should take child development, home economics, and other classes that involve you with child care”. It also says “you’ll also need a fundamental understanding of the general subjects you’ll be introducing to preschool students, so take English, science, and math”. Don’t forget art, music, and drama for creative skills.
During my observation at the preschool here at Harper, I looked around and realized a lot of similarities and differences it has; compared to other daycare and preschool centers. The age of children in the room I observed was ages 3-5 with one lead teacher, and depending on the ratio of how many kids showed up on that day, about three or four helping teachers. The program was set up to a very open, happy and overwhelming setting. Every furniture and object in the room had a sign saying what it was, and then underneath the typed out word was the children’s way of writing what the object was. High quality early childhood education programs and highly effective, passionate teachers or care providers will not only promote young children’s development and academic achievement but will also foster a lifelong passion for learning. ECE programs and educators utilize learning centers to contribute to young children’s acquisition of literacy, numeracy, creative thinking, problem solving, and motor skills as well as a number of other skills and knowledge (Jarrett, 2010).
While daycare/ childcare centers provide a safe haven for young children and left in the care of licensed caregivers, there is more to daycare then just temporary relief for parents. These facilities offer a nurturing and fun learning environment to promote curiosity, innovation, and continuous growth in developmental abilities and positivity in children, and they also have the ability to provide encouraging and engaging activities that endorse emotional, social, and academic development (Phillips 1987). Within these facilities, high quality care calls for each child reach greater levels of learning and can develop skills at their own pace under supervision.
Preschool classroom’s fosters an exploratory play environment for children ages four to five to prepare students for private school kindergarten courses and utilizes North Carolina kindergarten standards to develop curriculum. Cumberland County public school system does not have the best reputation for educating students and has created a need for more private schools. It has been well established that early childhood is a crucial time for children’s cognitive development (Bowman, Donovan & Burns, 2001). Preschool curriculum is the entire span of lessons and teachings that a child will be taught during the course of a preschool year (Rock, 2015). Preschool curriculum covers a wide variety of academic, social, physical, and emotional lessons and usually vary from school to school and teaching method to teaching method. Depending upon the school and the preschool philosophy employed by the preschool, the preschool curriculum can be developed by administrators, teachers, and parents.
While there are some caregiver’s that are only in the human service field to earn a paycheck and with the lack of parental involvement in their child’s life, it can make a caregiver’s job more challenging. Daycare centers serve as a stepping stone for a child’s future that will teach them how to establish appropriate skills and aid in the development of their cognitive abilities. Positive child interactions not only aid in the development of social and cognitive development, but also in the child’s self-esteem and it lets them know they are important and loved.
The daycare will be open to all employees at the company. Two new employees will have to be hired to work in the center. The workers will specialize in early childhood education and first aid. Children are required to have all vaccinations to attend the daycare center.
