There are varying descriptions of the Hero’s Journey steps but only the steps that are set by the teacher is used. These steps are the “The Call”, “Allies”, “Preparation”, “The Guardians of the Threshold”, “Crossing the Threshold”, “Road of Trials”, “Saving Experience”, “Transformation”, and ”Sharing the Gift”.This essay is explaining what the Hero’s Journey is in the book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. Many intricate and renowned stories have been told over the history of humankind. Few have been linked and related to each other in the strangest of ways. Many people have critiqued and compared every last tantalizing detail in all of the stories and ripped them to their very meaning. When finding two stories that are very similar, you have to dip deep into their meanings and you have to find every single difference you can to bring the stories alive. The time and the place and the characters behaviors within their cultures are all extremely important factors. In the two stories The Man to Send Rain Clouds and The Old Man of the Temple, many bountiful similarities and differences can be found.
A literary genius once said, “Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader – not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.” I couldn’t of said it better if I tried. For this reason, “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury is a much better story than “Nethergrave” by Gloria Skurzynski because of its stronger characterization, more vividly described setting, and its conflict that creates a more powerful and lasting impact upon the story’s reader.
'The Storm' and 'The Story of an Hour' expresses the attitudes of two women's rebirth and liberation. These two stories are alike in several ways. The Crucible introduces Reverend Hale as a man who believes he knows right from wrong, but after taking part in the witch trials, he leaves bewildered, questioning his morals. Furthermore, Kingston’s The Woman Warrior reveals the hardships that immigrants must face while acclimating to American culture, a dilemma that Kingston wrestles with throughout the stories. In the memoir, Brave Orchid, Kingston’s mother, remains fixed on not conforming to American values. Although Reverend Hale and Brave Orchid’s personalities diverge in their respective works, both characters react differently to major events in their lives. Though, Reverend Hale emerges as a progressive character, whereas Brave Orchid remains static. Reverend Hale from Miller’s The Crucible decides to accept the reality of the world around him and adapt while Brave Orchid from Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior remains unvaried despite her rapidly changing environment.
All stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies. They are known collectively as The Hero’s Journey. If a reader is given two short stories, two stories that are seemingly different on the surface, to read and compare and contrast, a surprising amount of similarities and differences can be found. Unless they deal with the same subject matter, most short stories aren't really related, until some analysis is done. The stories "A&P," by John Updike, and "An Ounce of Cure," by Alice Munro, are very similar but very different.
The two short stories that I have chosen are The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe and The Storm by Kate Chopin. These two stories in particular doesn't have many things in common as far as setting goes, but they do have some significant differences between the two. The author are from two different background and different eras In this paper I will try to compare and contrast these two short stories and hopefully bring something to the reader's attention that wasn't there at first.
