“ If there is no struggles, there is no progress.” This famous quote was stated by Frederick Douglas. He was an african american abolitionist, civil rights leader, and social reformer that was born into slavery and faced many hardships in his life but eventually he overcame his difficulties and became a very famous colored man in a world full of slavery. In the book “Hope Was Here”, also several characters face struggles that require inner strength to overcome. Some examples are Braverman, Addie, and Hope. All of them had struggles but still overcame them. My great-grandmother had many obstacles in her life, but she still overcame them.

If you had different hardships in your life would you be a different person? The answer is most likely yes. A person’s character is based upon the experiences they have been through. “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant,” –Horace. In “And Still We Rise” by Miles Corwin, Corwin shares the lives of inner city kids who still strive to succeed and go to college although the circumstances they are dealt with have told them otherwise. Some of the kids that dealt with bad hands were Toya, Olivia, and Willie. The struggles that they went through are impetuous.

Dwight Lyman Moody once said, " Character is what you are in the dark." This means that a person's true character is brought forward when they go through challenges. I agree with this quote, when people go through hard times the unimportant things are stripped away, and they have to learn to grow and adapt despite the obstacles they face. In the book "The Hunger Games," Suzanne Collins shows how some people's challenges change them for the better, other characters don't know how to cope and take longer to adapt, and how people's reactions differed from each others.

Moving to a new place and starting something new in life can take perseverance to get used to and adjust. In the story of The Call of the Wild, Buck the dog is kidnapped and sold into a new life where he has to adapt and learn lessons through difficult situations. In contrast to Buck, my mother had to raise her young daughter through poverty and school which took perseverance. While my mother’s challenges weren’t as life threatening or severe, she moved to a new place and had to adapt to her new schooling with dealing with the struggle of raising a child. Perseverance Through Pain Pain is a very large obstacle that has many difficulties, which requires perseverance to overcome. In the novel, The Call of the Wild, Buck the dog, went through substantial amounts of pain. Including beatings, losing loved ones, and harsh winters, in all of these events Buck had to persevere through pain. In contrast, my mother was in a terrifying car crash and had to get past all of the misery and pain.

Every day Buck has another obstacle to face in order to stay alive. In The Call of The Wild, Jack London uses the character, Buck, to illustrate the theme of survival. Buck was forced to do something he knew nothing about, being a sled dog. Shortly after he was taken from his home he was bought and forced to be a sled dog, trying to learn from the other dogs in the team. He eventually gets the hang of it and as his strength increases he becomes one of the best on the team.

Everyone has to go through tough events in their life, but to be successful you have to have to persevere and overcome it. In Call Of The Wild Buck went through a lot of struggle, but he was able to persevere and become a great sled dog. However, my dad also went through a lot with his high school football team also, but they overcame all of it and won the state championship. Although they persevered in different ways they both were able to overcome a struggle and be successful. To persevere you must be able to overcome adversity, and Buck and my Dad both did that.

Life is not a bed of roses rather it is a bed of thorns. Sometimes it looks like paradise but on the other hand it seems like a hell. It depends on human beings how they response under different circumstances. The one human being I believe went through adversities was Louis Zamperini. Zamperini was a POW in Japan. He went through various struggles such as being stranded in the ocean, being tortured in a death camp, starvation; he even used his last bit of strength to save his friends. Louis Zamperini was a man of many traits but the three that stick out to me are having forgiveness, being a leader, and being an inspiration to many.

With their unique writing styles you are transported into the story along with all of the characters. For many authors, their writing styles are influenced by the authors backstory. Edgar Allen Poe’s early life was laced with tragedy and sadness, whereas Roald Dahl’s life was happier with better memories. Because of this Roald Dahl's stories tend to be more happy and adventurous, although he wrote some horror tales for fun. Edgar Allen Poe used horror and suspense for almost all of his writing.

For example, Tyler Perry; he had a terrible childhood, he was physically and sexually abused as a child, kicked out of high school, and tried to commit suicide twice in his lifetime. Still, through all his hardships, he produced and starred in his first theater production, I Know I’ve Been Changed, which failed. Therefore he obtained odd jobs to pay for the production; finally on the seventh run the show broke through. Through all his hardships he never gave up and today has a successful career as a writer, director, and actor. Oprah Winfrey also endured a rough childhood because of sexual abuse, she had a child at fourteen who passed away two weeks after. She continued on to finish high school with honors and get a scholarship for college. She worked her way up from TV anchor to a creator of her own network. Scientist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS and through his colleague, friends, and family’s support he became a great scientist. Through his perseverance Hawking managed many accomplishments such as his published book on the theories of the Big Bang. Nelson Mandela was also a person with great resilience who dreamed of racial equality and spent 27 years in prison for it.

While you start to mature and outset to grow up you will face challenges that you will have to persevere through. In The Call of Wild, Buck moves from owner to owner and is never able to maintain a good health. On the other hand, my mom struggled finding a job and went back to college and really had to mature more as a women. Comparing, my mom and Buck both moved around and had to grow up more enable to achieve what their struggle . Overall, my mom and Buck both had to persevere rather it being going back to college to get a better job and having to mature as a women or moving from keeper to keeper trying to stay healthy.
