Compare And Contrast European And Native Americans

In 1492 the Europeans traveled to America and discovered the New World this began many problems between different cultures. The Europeans and Native Americans were the ones who had the most problems with each other. They also have many differences from their values to their ways of life. Their differences range from one believing in God and being Christian while the other believes in many spirits. One has more freedom than the other and one takes over their land while the other needs land is willing to share the land. Throughout all their differences there is a similarity which happens to be the way they believe men are stronger and higher up than the women are. Even with all of these differences and problems the cultures had good came from it all. Europeans followed a Christian way of life, “In keeping with their Christian beliefs, most Europeans took literally the biblical admonition to subdue the earth and exert dominion over it.”They followed what the bible said and they often tried to convert others such as the Native Americans to Christianity. If they did convert then there would be severe consequences, “The Europeans came as messengers from God to convert the Natives to Christianity, as they saw it. Spanish missions converted many Natives. However, those who would not convert were killed or imprisoned”. Since Native Americans did not practice the religion of Christianity they practiced more of nature or spirit worship. In the book “America” it says, “Native Americans did not worship a single God but believed in many ‘spirits’”. They believed in Gods such as sun Gods,corn gods and nature spirits of birds, bears and wolves. Now, when it came to ownership of the land the Native Americans were known for hunting so, they needed their hunting land as well as land to grow crops. They were open for sharing land, “The South’s native people had well-defined hunting territories, fishing grounds, and agricultural plots which they vigorously defended against encroachment. However, they did not regard land as property that could be transferred in perpetuity to another individual or group”. However, the Europeans did not think the land should be shared.
