In about the year 1400, there were many distinct characteristics within traditional European society and West African society, in which they were both similar, yet different. They were similar in their religious beliefs; however, they had developed different motives within rituals. In addition, they also structured their political system different. Their religious beliefs are also similar to Native American’s beliefs. However, Native Americans structured their political system and kept society in order differently.
Within European and West African societies, animism (the belief that the natural world has spiritual power) is one of the predominant beliefs. It is believed that there are spiritual forces encompassing the Earth, and they interact with humanity. These beliefs led to worship and rituals to these divine spirits. In Europe, kings and princes (monarchs) are at the top of the social chain, as they ruled over kingdoms, duchies, and republics. There were also strong local nobles that sometimes challenged monarchs. Political freedom was tight, due to the kings and princes orders. On the other hand, West Africa had stratified states, kingdoms, or empires. Most of the time, they were independent of one another and traded around as West Africa was more divided into three climatic zones. Similar to Europe, they ruled by kings and princes. However, West African kings and princes were known to have the power to contact divine spirits. Political freedom typically varied throughout, but seem to be more loose than Europe since West Africa is more divided up.
