Lucas Scully Professor Szczespanski 2017 October 22 First Year Seminar Freud and Foucault Throughout reading the two books on Sigmund Freud and Foucault we can infer that they have many views, standpoints on various ideas, points about certain aspects also as to why we act like we do. One standpoint both philosophers have, is the idea of restraint. Restraint is a measure or condition that keeps someone or something under control or within limits. As it can also be unemotional, dispassionate, or moderate behavior; self-control. Both Freud and Foucault have their very strong opinions on the subject of Restraint. Freud talks about restraint through your libido and super ego. While Foucault talks about restraint as The first time Foucault talks about restraint is in The Means of Correct Training. One way Sigmund Freud talks about the idea of restraint as read in his book Civilization and its Discontents is through sex and the Sex drive every person has. The idea of restraint comes from is that it is impossible to resist and restrain yourself from sex and sex urges. Every human acts the way they do due to their libido. Freud informs you that your libido or also known as your sex drive controls on how you act like you do. It is natural from birth to have a libido and there is no way to stop it.
