The two stories “Hills like White Elephants” and “Young Goodman Brown” there weren’t many comparisons between the two. But a comparison of the two is that both The American and the Mysterious man are both trying to get somebody to be a part of what others see as an evil act. In “Hills like White Elephants” The American is trying to get the girl to agree to have an abortion. During that time period abortions were frowned upon and looked at as evil and wrong. Throughout the story The American try to say that he only wants to do what the girl decides to do but the reader can tell The American wants her to have the abortion. On the other hand, in “Young Goodman Brown” The Mysterious man in the woods is trying to get Goodman Brown to attend the ceremony in the woods. …show more content…

Though both in very different ways the reader can see that both characters are trying to get The Girl and Goodman Brown to participate in evil activities. One of the many differences in the story how The American and Goodman Brown see the evil in their actions. The American sees the girl having an abortion as bad but still wants her to go through with action in the end. The couple seems to both be disturbed by the actions they talk about throughout the story. As he continuously tells her, she doesn’t have to go through with the abortion if she doesn’t want to but still secretly wants her have the abortion. While in “Young Goodman Brown” Goodman Brown truly sees the evil in what the mysterious man is doing. While he knows, the ceremony is wrong, he watches from a distance and see everyone from his village including his wife. As he tries to get his wife’s attention he becomes angered by the fact everyone he knows has fallen to devil and lost their faith to God.
