The Theogony is one of the most well-known sources of ancient Greek Mythology. It was written around 700 BC and delineates the emergence of the universe as well as the gods’ births and origins. Hesiod begins and ends the poem with a reference to the Heliconian Muses, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddesses of the arts as well as proclaimers of heroes and gods. Finally, perhaps the most vital and well-known aspect of Greek culture is its religious beliefs and ideologies. Deeply pious in the gods, the Greeks believed the Zeus guarded the world with other Olympian gods, and these higher beings determined each individual’s future. Fate and destiny were believed in, and sacrifices were constantly committed in order to please the gods and gain their favor. Prayers to the gods for aid and help were common. Prophecies were numerous, although accurate ones were rare. And of course, the Greeks believed in the Underworld, a dreadful land with Hades as its ruler. “The Odyssey”, being in a Greek lifestyle, is naturally filled with references to these religious beliefs and thoughts. Odysseus and his companions often made sacrifices to the gods. He visits the Underworld to speak with the blind prophet Tiresias who accurately predicts Odysseus’s travels. Because of the prophet’s words, Odysseus is able to make his journey safely.

Homer, the son of Telemachus and Epikaste, was a Greek poet and court singer born sometime between the 12th and 8th century B.C. There is no certainty of his birth place, but it is believed that he was born somewhere on the Asia Minor coast. The language he uses in his poetry suggests that he may have been native to what is known today as Turkey. His is believed to be the originator of Europe’s first known literature, yet very little is actually known about him and what little information we do have was derived from scrupulously studying his works (softschools.com). Some would debate that he never really existed and that his works were just stories passed down orally through folk tales from generation to generation, but it is apparent that his poetry ended up setting the common values that preserved the Greek’s own ideas about themselves, provided the foundation for the model of heroism, and seemed to portray the Greek gods as always being less clever than their mortal contemporaries (pbs.org).

Sappho’s poem, entitled Fragment 16, is of the lyrical style instead of the epic style we are used to in Homer’s Iliad. The lyrical style of poetry got its name because it was usually accompanied by a lyre while it was recited. It also was used to express more emotion rather than telling a story. This form of poetry seems to be more artistic rather than the story telling of epic poetry of the time. In this poem we are able to use the comparison of different imagery to understand a common theme within the poem itself. The reason for the interesting title of the poem is because most of Sappho’s poetry is now only found in fragmented forms. Most of Sappho’s writing is from 600 B.C.E.
