Dating from the early 1900’s, till this day, people are still risking their lives to pursue the “American Dream”,in the pursuit of happiness and wealth. There are some obvious differences, but one underlying reason. They all come from a different country. According to Boustan, Platt, About 30 million immigrants arrived in the United States during this time. By 1910, 22 percent of the U.S. labor force was foreign born. It is much harder making it across the border legally. The greatest similarity of the 1900’s immigrants and today is that they both come for economic improvement.
One of the difference between the immigrants of the 1900’s and today is the country they originate. During the 1900’s, most of the immigrants who seek refuge in the United States of America came from Europe. Some small percentage of immigrants came from Asia, Mexico and Cuba. As much of a diversity America truly is, today the percentage of the immigrants is mostly from Mexico and Cuba. Asia is followed right after the two and a small percentage of the immigrants consists of Europeans.
Another great difference between immigrants of the 1900’s and today is the hardship to legally crossed the border. In the 1900’s, immigrants came to Ellis Island and were given a “brief” exam. If they passed the exam, the immigrant would be let into the United States of America soil.
