On paper, both Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay Colony were founded by charter companies in hopes of finding silver and gold in North America. However, the real reasons each colony was founded differed. Jamestown was founded by the Virginia Company of London, while the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by the Massachusetts Bay Company. Both colonies ran into similar difficulties after establishment. In the end, both were able to find a way to prosper.
The charters for both colonies stated they wanted to find silver and gold. In reality, the settlers did want to find riches, but also had other motives. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America and was founded in 1607. England wanted a settlement in the New World. Jamestown settlers went in search of gold and silver deposits as well as river route to Pacific Ocean. The hope was the river route would allow for easier trade with Asia. The Jamestown settlers included people not accustomed to hard

The settlers were 1000 well-educated Puritan refugees from England. They left England due to increasing pressure against religious dissenters. The Puritans created the Massachusetts Bay Company and convinced the king to give them a charter. The king was unaware of their religious views and they sold him on the chance of finding gold and silver. Even though the king thought the reason for settlement was finding silver and gold, the real reason was religious freedom. The Puritans wanted to be able to practice religion as they saw fit.
The initial failures faced by both settlements were very similar. Early problems included hunger, illness, harsh winters, and attacks by local Indian tribes. Additionally, the Massachusetts Bay Colony lacked fresh water and arrived later in the year than they wanted. This late arrival gave them less time to prepare provisions and buildings for the
to fund colonies in America. Soon enough, the colony of Jamestown was created, with multiple others
Jamestown, Virginia was established before the Puritans founded Massachusetts Bay. Even though both were British colonies, the intended reasons of the colonists were different. The Virginia colony was used for economic reasons which only noblemen came to make a profit. In contrast, the Massachusetts Bay colony was for Puritans to seek religious freedom. The purpose of the two colonies was different so that the colonists in each colony created unique organizations and purposes.
Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 the first colony was found. There were people who settled in the New World wanted to get away from religious beliefs. The Europeans became rich and expanded their knowledge over the world dealings. In Virginia colonist grew and Massachusetts has grown and was flourishing. Famine, disease, and conflict with local Native American tribes in the beginning two years brought Jamestown to the threshold of failure before the arrival of a young group of settlers and supplies in 1610.
There were three distinct colonies founded by the English in the Americas: Jamestown, Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth. Around this time, England was facing a population growth while also suffering an economic decline. Consequentially, many of the citizens sought to find a new life and opportunity. There was also a source of funding called a joint-stock company that spread the economic risks among multiple investors and was another factor in the colonies forming. However, these are only the leading factors and the three colonies had major differences between them.
One being their religions, in Jamestown they were Anglican, whereas in Mass. they were Puritan (Stokely). There is also the difference of geographic location. Massachusetts is located in the north where there are harsher weather conditions. Their location provided an excellent harbor and since the terrain did not allow much farming they started lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing, and trade. Virginia, in the south, where there is a much warmer climate, they had a great defensive position and were able to create prosperous plantations (Levy). The settlement in Massachusetts was made up of communities of family units because the colonists of Mass. came with their families (Sonia). Furthermore, the colonists of Jamestown were made up of individuals who understood the value of the crop tobacco, and were only there for the money. Virginia had an economy based on plantations and labor; Massachusetts was comprised of small farmers and merchants (“Instructions for the Virginia
Twenty-three years following the establishment of Virginia, another colony was founded, but this time not for economic reasons. Instead, Massachusetts Bay was established in 1630 for religious reasons. The Puritans were a religious group that wanted to make the Church of England more “pure”. Being two different kinds of Puritans, the non-separatists sought to reform the church within, while the separatist left the church completely. Around 1629, the non-separatist were granted a charter from King Charles I, allowing them to trade and colonize between the Charles and Merrimack rivers. Two different charters came over in a two-year period. The first one was led by John Endecott, and settled in Salem, Massachusetts. The second charter, that was
In 1606, King James I of England gave the Virginia Company permission to send a colony to the new world. The Virginia Company established Jamestown in 1607 on the James River. The settlers that had gone were artisans, soldiers and labors. There were also “gentlemen” but they did not want to deal with anything that involved work.
Unfortunately, both group, Plymouth and Jamestown became to have settlers rebel and not agree to rules and began having ideas of rebellion. The idea of staying together and being controlled by the prominent ruler, whether it was John Smith or William Bradford was difficult. It was also difficult to maintain a sustainable resource of food growth and crops. The fall of resource began and the commoners began to become greedy for survival and took advantage of the unsustainable rate of food production leaving others to starve and die. Both towns eventually collapsed because of the cause of starvation and death.
Virginia and Plymouth were one of the first colonies in the New World. They both had horrible conditions to live with including food shortages, storms, Indian attacks, disease, and frigid winters. Jamestown was the first permanent English colony in the Americas located in Virginia where colonists first landed in 1607. Six hundred people were sent in a fleet of nine vessels on a long month-long journey to Virginia.
The Massachusetts Bay colony was founded by John Winthrop in the early 1600’s, as a puritan colony. The puritans among coming here established a theocratic type government with the government positions limited to worthy church members. Which left many at a disadvantage. The puritan church believed they were gods chosen people and that they were the only “pure” and civil people left. Which lead to several conflicts with other colonies and groups .
On May 14, 1607, a group of roughly 100 members of a joint venture called the Virginia Company, founded the first permanent English settlement in North America. The Jamestown colonists purpose is to find gold, silver, and other resources all they want is claiming land and riches. Smith left the Jamestown settlers without a strong leader so he left all his people alone. There’s no houses for them, there’s no supplies for them to survive due to the lack of leadership. So the settlers faced many hardships they had not expected. The settlers lacked some skills necessary to contribute for themselves like farming, hunting, etc. Many settlers died not only because of starvation & disease but also during the winter many settlers starve or froze to death because they don’t have anything for that season. After all what happens to them the settler adjusted to their new lives in America. The few remaining colonists turned to local Powhatan Indians to help them learn the process of planting and harvesting corn and tobacco. The settlers relied on
Virginia was made mainly because of King James, he had given a charter to the Virginia Company in 1606 and from it Jamestown was constructed (Calvo). Economic motives are what had prompted the colonization of Virginia. The key point of this colony was to expand English trade and obtain more of a variety of the goods produced. Which would all result in a financial profit that England needed (“Revolutionary City”). Freedom from religious persecution is what motivated the Pilgrims to leave England, resulting in Massachusetts Bay colony. The Puritans wanted a place where they could practice their religion freely. Connected to this is the Great Migration, which was between 1630 and 1640 where forty to sixty thousand people emigrated to the colonies in America. The immigrants of this migration were Puritans who were not being accepted in England, these immigrants preferred to settle in Mass. among other Puritans (Sonia). This growth soon caused tensions between Massachusetts Bay and England. Many later immigrants were motivated by economic opportunities in the New World and many of them settled in the colonies of Virginia, where they were always in need of laborers (Calvo). The reasoning behind each colony’s settlement is vastly
They were not able to change the ways in Great Britain so the group decided to move to North America. Not on the bases of Jamestown to profit of new land but to be able to practice their beliefs freely. They wanted to be self-governed and to establish education and a new rules they felt fit for their people. In 1630 the Puritans sailed to America and established the town of Plymouth County. The settlers of Massachusetts suffered the same problems as Jamestown with lack of food, disease, and issues with Natives. Jamestown however, was believers of Anglican faith, which was the Church of England. While the Puritans where the first self-governed colony. and religiously free from the mother
Jamestown presented more prospects to colonists than Massachusetts Bay Colony by allowing more than one religion, workers rights, and freedom of speech. Jamestown settlers had a bond from England guarantees the rights of settlers, as they would have had it in England. The Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony and they established a charter also. Both colonies had their have and have not in them. Massachusetts Bay Colony encourage the church greatly and Jamestown boost working over religion. The starting of a democracy, equality was from Jamestown.
However, Virginia colonists differed from New England colonists in a multitude of ways. The Virginia colonists began their colony, Jamestown, because of an economic venture. The Virginia Company of London, a joint-stock company in England, was interested in making a quick profit from a temporary colony in the Americas. As a result, Jamestown settlers were not well equipped to handle the dangers of the New World. Most Jamestown settlers were aristocratic males who
