Lewis and Clark expedition - In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark began an exciting adventure. They led a group of American explorers on a long trip. There were no cars or airplanes back then. The men used boats and horses. They went through the land in which only the Indian tribes lived. They left from the mouth of the Missouri River. They went all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back. They were called the Corps of Discovery. Their journey was almost 8,000 miles long. It took them two years to make. Part of the trip was along the Missouri River in what is now South. lewis and clark help they got from The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. Shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, a select group of U.S.
In 1803, Thomas Jefferson ordered Meriwether Lewis to be the leader of the discovery and William Clark to be his co-leader. They were to travel into the Louisiana Territory that they had purchased and learn more about the geography and to develop knowledge about the future expansion of the fur trade. Jefferson made supplies available such as clothing, firearms, and equipment which was set at a fixed amount. They were to observe and track the entire area and find out where they could find resources and stable settlement. Much of the land was unidentified but, Jefferson wanted to increase the amount of land to the Pacific to make the American claim more powerful. The expedition began in December of 1803 and Clark enlisted and instructed men near
This expedition to survey the land West of the Mississippi, known as Louisiana Territory, that had been purchased from France in 1803. Lewis, Clark and the rest of their expedition began their journey near St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804. This group often called the Corps of Discovery by historians faced nearly every obstacle and hardship imaginable on their trip. They braved dangerous waters and harsh weather and endured hunger, illness, injury and fatigue. During their first winter, they received help and guidance from Sacagawea, a Shoshone
Thomas Jefferson decided to send his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead an expedition to explore the West. Lewis chose William Clark to go with him. They were to make careful studies on the geology, botany, and zoology of the region, and gather information on any natives they met. Also, they were to try to find the source of the Missouri River and seek evidence of British soldiers or forts in the area. They left St. Louis on May 14, 1804. They used a fifty-five-foot keelboat and two flat- bottomed dugouts, but when the Missouri River became shallow all the boats were abandoned. The group followed the Missouri, Snake, and Columbia rivers most of the way. At Fort Mandan a French fur trapper named Charbonneau and his wife Sacajawea joined
Thomas Jefferson original goal for the expedition was to find a waterway that connects the Mississippi river and the port of New Orleans to the Pacific ocean so that America could trade with the far east. Lewis and clark were able to make it to the Pacific ocean, just not by boat. They had to travel through the Rocky Mountains by foot then build new boats. But on the other hand Thomas Jefferson had just made the Louisiana purchase and the area needed to be explored. Luis and Clark did accomplish this goal when they made it to the Pacific and created the first map of the area.
Meriwether Lewis and William were two explorers in the early nineteenth century. They travelled nearly 8,000 miles, in approximately two years, and were instrumental in shaping American history.
President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the expedition shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 to explore and to map the newly acquired territory, to find a practical route across the western half of the continent, and to establish an American
When the words “Lewis and Clark Expedition” are heard, the first thing that probably comes to mind is that they protected and were kind to Indians. That’s because the expedition was strongly outlined by the white men on the journey. Now, Indians speaking about their history and re-interpreting the evidence shows that Lewis and Clark were not the hailed heroes who respected the Native Americans on their expedition. Therefore, Lewis and Clark and their party were not respectful to the Native Americans they met because of their attempts to civilize, the name-calling, and violent acts against them.
The Louisiana Purchase affected the boundaries of the U.S. because when Jefferson bought the land, the boundaries were not clear. Spain claimed the border was about one hundred miles west of the Mississippi River, while Jefferson was under the impression that it was around eight hundred miles further west, which was defined by the crest of the Rocky Mountains. This lead to four different government-funded expeditions. The first was in 1804 when Lewis and Clark led an expedition westward to determine the upper reaches of the Missouri River. Throughout the expedition Lewis and Clark were instructed to study the Indian culture, such as plants and animals. They were able to explore the Indian culture when they stayed their first winter in huts beside the Mandan Indians. Without the help from the Indians they would not have survived the winter. They also had to draw out the geography of the West. After the treacherous journey, they reached the Pacific Ocean on November 7, 1805. They made their journey back to St. Louis and arrived back in September 1806. The other three expeditions that took place between 1804 and 1806 were to determine the southwestern border. The first group went down the Red River to the Ouachita River, ending in current-day Arkansas. The second group went west into eastern Texas along the Red River and the third group ended up going too far into the Spaniard’s
The Louisiana purchase was a purchase that the United States bought from France. The United States bought land from France. The United States purchased the Louisiana territory from France on July 4th of 1803. According to, Monticello.org “The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 was a land deal made between the United States and France. The United States received 827,000 square miles of land in the west of the Mississippi River for 15 million dollars” (Monticello.org). Also, the same year the United States purchased Louisiana territory from France the President Thomas Jefferson sends Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with other recruits to explore the Louisiana territory. Lewis and Clark also had a very long journey because their journey lasted for
Greatness is, the quality of being great, eminent, or distinguished. Lewis and Clark, the leaders of the Corps of Discovery, can be described perfectly with the word greatness. The Corps of Discovery was a unit made by the U.S Army and tasked to explore and claim the land to the west. Fortunately, the Corps of Discovery had mapped and discovered the new land they had acquired, but also much more. President Jefferson ordered U.S. Captain Meriwether Lewis to be the leader of this exploration.
This plot of land we had purchased was about 828,000,000 square miles at about 3 cents per acre(61 cents per acre when accounting for inflation). The first modern day state to be made of the new land was Louisiana. In order to explore this land, the government hired Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition into this uncharted territory. This journey spanned over 8,000 miles over places such as the Ohio river,Continental divide, and Pacific Ocean. They started this journey in May of 1804. This journey was plagued with overwhelming hardships and difficulties. They preserved even when faced with injury, hunger, and illness. The lewis and clark expedition received help from the native americans already living in the area. They would provide supplies so the expedition could survive the winter. Their small expedition team quickly grew as people like Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau to assist with translating when communicating with the Native Americans. They had finally reached the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805. They built a camp called Fort Clatsop in modern day Oregon and they had
Either way, Lewis was the man for the job. He had skill as a gentleman, politician and military officer as well as skill with the sciences and all the knowledge of Indians as could be found. With his friend William Clark as his equal for the journey, they spent the fall and winter in preparation. Jefferson had given Lewis a “blank check” with the understanding that he should buy what he needed and the U.S. government would pay the bill, despite the fact that only $2500 had originally been approved by congress before the formal purchase of the Louisiana Territory. (Jefferson)

In May of 1804, two men set out on an important journey that would take them across the country and discover new land, but none of it would have been possible without the aid of one woman. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was planned by Thomas Jefferson, in order to explore the unknown in the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, and also to find a water route across the continent. Along the way the group of men met a quiet native, named Sacagawea, whose impact would later have a large effect on the success of their important journey.
Louis. From there they sailed up to the Wood River where they established Camp Dubois for the winter. Lewis and Clark completed their preparation during the winter by buying supplies, over hauling their boats, drilling their men, and completing their roster. A total of twenty-five soldiers and twenty civilian boatmen, guides, and hunters were selected for the expedition. Lewis estimated this journey would last at least two years. Finally on May 14, 1804 the expedition began.
