Compare and Contrast Essay People have fought for civil rights with nonviolence, but people fight wars with violence. In Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize speeches, both see violence and nonviolence differently. Readers can see King and Obama’s different positions in society, how they use violence as examples, and how they want to establish peace. These men, want to do whats right for people, and they are doing it in a different, but effective way.

King and Obama, see things differently because they are in different positions in society. King won the nobel peace prize for his activism for human rights, he says, “ I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when 22 million Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice.” King protests non-violence to end segregation, and to lead people to the idea of civil rights. To solve the racial divide, King leads an activist group with the use of nonviolence. King protests that nonviolence is key to succeeding from corrupt problems when he states, “ … I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time.” Kings says this because he stresses that nonviolence is the solution against the problems that people have to face. King doesn’t just protest for civil rights, he protests nonviolence as a key for solving peoples differences. Obama sees things more from a military view than an activist one, he claims, “But perhaps the most profound issue surrounding my receipt of this prize is the fact that I am the Commander-in-Chief of the military of a nation in the midst of two wars.” Being president, Obama has to make military decisions to do whats right for America. Obama say in is involved with two wars; which means, he would use violence to solve these issues. Obama is in control over the military, he says “I'm responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land. Some will kill, and some will be killed. And so I come here with an acute sense of the costs of armed conflict.” Obama commands the military, and he
