The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful and action-packed tale. In this story, there are two memorable characters, Rainsford and General Zaroff. These two characters share many similarities, yet are very unique in their own way. General Zaroff and Rainsford share many traits that show how similar they actually are. For example, They both have the same build. This means their bodies are the same shape and size. Proof of this is on page 9, it says “‘ You’ll find that my clothes will fit you, I think.’” If their clothes can fit each other, their bodies must be alike. Another similarity between them is that they are both hunters. Examples of this is when Rainsford and Whitney are on their yacht. They talk about going to Rio to hunt jaguar (1). For Zaroff, on page 10 he says how his one passion is the hunt. Finally, both of them are wealthy. For instance, on page 1, Rainsford and Whitney are on a yacht. Yachts are very big and expensive boats. Also, on page 7, Rainsford sees Zaroff’s giant chateau, on Zaroff’s private island. Theses characters are very similar, and therefore have interesting interactions. …show more content…
For example, Rainford is very calm. Evidence of this is on page 19, when Rainsford was being hunted, he kept sane and therefore made traps to keep him alive. If he panicked, he wouldn’t have been able to survive. Another trait of Rainsford is a survivalist. This means that he is able to stay living with little goods. For example, on page 22, Rainsford built a trap to injure or kill Zaroff out of a tree. Lastly, Rainsford is a risk taker. Proof of this is when Rainsford was building another trap. Rainsford searched around for the quicksand even though he knew that he might step in it, which he does
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game’’ Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. The story is about a hunter named Rainsford whose boat sank, and he swam to Ship Trap island. He finds a house there, and he found out it belongs to General Zaroff. General Zaroff is also a hunter, and he made up “The Most Dangerous Game’’. It’s about a game about General Zaroff killing humans, because he thinks it’s more challenging.
Rainsford was more justified in his actions than General Zaroff was. It is better that Rainsford killed General Zaroff instead of General Zaroff killing Rainsford.
For starters, General Zaroff and Rainsford are intelligent hunters. “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right and doggedly he swam in that direction slow deliberate strokes conserving his energy” (pg 21). Rainsford quickly connected that the shots would led to people and also led to the island which is safer than the open waters. He was able to rapidly reason is a stressful situation. “I killed my first bear in the Caucasus when in was ten” (pg 25). Zaroff has a good deal of knowledge and experience when it comes to hunting because he has been doing it his whole life. Rainsford is the more intelligent hunter because he is quicker to reason and doesn’t underestimate a situation or an opponent.
People might look at the title of “The Most Dangerous Game” and think that this game can not be that dangerous. But during the game, General Zaroff, a retired Russian military officer, and Sanger Rainsford, an expert hunter, fight for their lives. The characters’ behaviors and traits also play a big role in the story. General Zaroff’s most significant character trait is that he is a very skilled hunter. Rainsford's experience in hunting is his most important character trait.
Both of Rainsford and Zaroff are very intelligent hunters. When Rainsford is the prey he feels like he might lose at certain moments like the time when he was on the tree with the dogs but he pushes on and sets traps on the contrary cocky Zaroff runs into them. Rainsford and Zaroff similarly hunt as sport but Zaroff will take it to the extreme and start to hunt humans. Keep in mind this then foreshadows them going against each other and eventually Rainsford kills Zaroff and goes to sleep but i do think Rainsford becomes Zaroff or takes his place.Next is even more differences and similarities of Zaroff and Rainsford. Such as General Zaroff being a former cossack hailing from Russia however Rainsford is an American from New York. Second Rainsford is very sociable and kind of outgoing on the other hand Zaroff seems to like being lonely. Since he lives in a remote island with his bodyguard Ivan. Zaroff may be more intelligent than Rainsford but Zaroff’s arrogance let Rainsford escape and Rainsford was able to win at Zaroff's own
When contrasting to “The Most Dangerous Game”, General Zaroff hunts men like Rainsford for pleasure, not for revenge. Another conflict is how the main characters started out in the stories. “He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and had lost his balance” (Connell 5). This citation was when Rainsford heard gunshots from afar. His curiosity got the better of him, so he went to check it out.
One of the most noticeable similarities between these two men is their shared love of hunting. Both of them had hunted exotic game all around the world, and they are both very knowledgeable about hunting. When General Zaroff meets Rainsford he says, "It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home.” (pg. 23) The General recognizes Rainsford's hunting prowess, and he is excited to test his skills against Rainsford's. The General shows his love of the hunt later by saying, "I have but one passion in my life, Mr. Rainsford, and it is the hunt” (pg. 24). The General is displaying his love of the hunt, and the mutual love of hunting that these two men share plays a big role throughout the story. Another main similarity that both of these men show is their intelligence and sensibility. Rainsford's cunning
“The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, explores the morality issues surrounding mankind hunting each other. The motive for writing this paper is to explain is it right or wrong to kill another person for the sake of entertainment. The reason for writing this paper is to compare and contrast how Rainsford and General Zaroff act in the movie. Rainsford’s characteristics in the movie are caring ,and understanding, General Zaroff’s characteristics are friendly, and mysterious. This essay will contrast how Rainsford and General Zaroff differ in the movie and book.
Both protagonists, have similar conflicts which contain having them killed. In the story General Zaroff says, "Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" (Connell 16). General Zaroff has the intention of killing Rainsford to cure his own boredom. This is the similar to when Frank Miller is coming in town to kill Kane. They also
I feel like General Zaroff demonstrates the characteristic of being courageous. Zaroff says, “I hunt more dangerous game(p.3). General Zaroff mentions that there is a big game on the island, he is referring to hunting dangerous things. This shows that Zaroff has a lot of courage and isn’t afraid of a big challenge when it comes to hunting. General Zaroff and Rainsford discusses hunting the biggest animal in the game and immediately Rainsford brings up the tiger.
Rainsford uses his intellectual composure during the most frightening of circumstances. He uses this to his advantage when attempting to outsmart Zaroff during the game. Rainsford’s actions portray his ability to outsmart his component and win the game. Rainsford’s quickness to react to certain situations also displays his desire to win maintain his title. “Rainsford knew he could do one or two things. He could wait, which is suicide. Or he could flee” (Cornell 74). Rainsford’s plan does not include giving up. Rainsford’s continuously proves why he remains the champion in the most dangerous game.
The general was telling him about all the humans he has hunted and plans on hunting. Later on Rainsford said to the general “I can’t believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke.” What the general is saying to Rainsford is that he is serious. Rainsford can not believe it and most people would not. Why would Rainsford want to repeat what the general did when he has the option not to. Zaroff is evil and Rainsford knows that. Their is no way that he would want to repeat what the general
For instance when rainsford gets to know general zaroff, and asks him about his hunting skills zaroff says “ Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago.” This shows the confusion of the difference in their idea of hunting. This also shows the different and personality and character traits each one has. You can sense a difference when zaroff says “ No thrill in tigers, no real danger, i live for danger.” This shows zaroff never had an interest in hunting animals. This also shows zaroff lives for danger and he can't get that satisfaction from hunting animals. This proves zaroff is different from rainsford and he hunts humans.
Hunting-it is a dangerous sport. Many people around the world participate in this game, but what is the most dangerous on a rich, murderous Russian’s island. There he finds that he is going to be hunted and killed next by General Zaroff. Rainsford’s survival depends on his past experiences as a soldier and hunter, predate and catch.

He will hunt humans because Zaroff convinced him how much of a rush you feel. Rainsford liked hunting the people he hunted because he felt very successful after he killed them.
