Greece had three common forms of government, these were monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy. The reason for many different types of government across Greece was due to the geography. “The ancient Greek city-states were separated from each other by hilly countryside and all were near the water.” (http://ancienthistory.about.com). In comparison, Rome also had a couple forms of government. Ancient Rome was a republic, but as they conquered territory, Rome gathered part of the civilizations cultures and added it to their own. For this reason Rome’s government is “a mixed Republican form

The Romans still worshipped similar to the Greeks where a sacrifice was offered, worshipped in temples, but the Romans held more festivals than the Greeks did. Unlike Greece, where there was only one main religion, in Rome at this time, other religions were starting to develop. Christianity had begun to be preached in Rome and they were gaining congregations. The “Christians often experienced fierce persecution and took refuge in the catacombs of the cities; when discovered, they most often chose a martyr’s death.” (Visual History of the World) Soon after though, a Christian church was formed which allowed them to promote their religion

The government was ruled by two kings making an oligarchy, meaning a small group of people had control over sparta. Athens government was a democracy meaning everyone could vote. But it technically wasn’t a true democracy because they still had slaves and treated women unfairly.

Ancient Rome The Ancient Roman civilization was a civilization that rose from a little city in Italy to form one of the most well known empires today. It lasted for 1000 years, and it wasn’t easily decided whether Rome’s government was a monarchy, a democracy or a oligarchy. It changed from being the Roman Republic to being the Roman Empire. Republic The ancient Roman Republic government was made up of a three-hundred member senate, two consuls, and a dictator. The senate came up with ideas then passed them on to the consuls, which either vetoed it or made it a law, So the senate pretty much came up with the ideas, There were two consuls to make sure one wasn’t doing something really crazy, like if one consul tried to make it where no one could ever eat or drink a dairy product the other could say that was crazy and they could veto it, just like the president can now in the United States of America.
Two of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world were the civilizations of Greece and Rome. These two civilizations were especially significant from the time periods prior to the Roman Republic. These two civilizations both affected Europe and the Mediterranean regions including the rest of the world around them. Though the two civilizations differed in location, they also had many aspects that were very similar. One of these includes the government, with both showing the beginnings of the representative government. Another aspect between these civilizations was the military with similar strategies, tactics, and organizational similarities.

The Greeks and the Romans were two empires with similar goals, but contrasting government control. Within Greece were the Spartans and Athenians, which had two diverse governmental bodies. The Spartans were ruthless and focused on military success, while the Athenians lived off of a democracy and let their people decide what was best for the state. Close by were the Romans, who cared for their people liked the Athenians, but made acquiring land a necessity as to the Spartans. Although the Spartans, Athenians, and Romans were made up of different laws and government, they still kept control over their people for centuries to come.
