So many things have changed since the 1500s when the play was made. She's the Man is a modern twist made in 2006 concerning only the key points of the play. The whole trickery portion that goes on between Malvolio and Maria is just another aspect of the play that is not necessary to the plot of the movie. Most other facets of the play were modified to entertain a more modern audience. For instance, Olivia was mourning her father and brother’s deaths which would not have suited the theme of the film. It was modified to say that Olivia just went through a hard breakup. It has the same effect of melancholy, but presented in a different
For instance, when he finds the love letter that is supposedly written by Olivia, confessing her love for him, and telling him to smile, wear yellow stockings and go cross-gartered, he says, “I will smile, I will do every thing that thou wilt have me.” (2, 5, 165-6). He thinks the letter is from countess Olivia, who he is in love with, and believes that the greatness of being her husband is about to be given to him. Before finding the letter, he wanders around in Olivia’s garden and dreams about himself “To be Count Malvolio!” (2, 5, 32). He imagines how the other characters of the play would serve him, which again shows that Malvolio thinks he stands above everyone. In addition, when Malvolio is hailed by Olivia, he arrives smiling, wearing yellow stockings and cross-gartered, which makes Olivia think he has gone insane: “Why, this is very midsummer madness.” (3, 4, 51). Consequently, in this part of the play Malvolio’s inside does not match his outside. Throughout the play he is a grave character, that detests other persons having fun, so his actions of smiling and wearing strange dress make him look like a madman, which is why he gets locked up in Olivia’s basement. Towards the end, he returns to his initial manner, and declares that he will “be reveng’d on the whole pack of you!”, referring to the characters that tricked him into believing that the letter was
In “Anabell Lee” there is a man and he has a lover and she suddenly dies and its about how much he loved her/ how deppressed he is. In “alone” its about a man that has been deppressed his whole life and never fell out of it so he never got out there so hes allways gonna be alone. Both poems “Anabell Lee”, and alone have very simular tones becaues in both of them the narriator seems very depressed.
“Tell me, o muse, of that ingenious hero who traveled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy”(11). This quote not only begins the novel The Odyssey by Homer, but also the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou. This is only one of the many similarities between these two pieces. The Odyssey is about the great war hero Odysseus’ twenty year troublesome attempt to reach his home. His long, painful journey to reach home after the ten year Trojan War is endured through temptations, peril, and literally hell. Odysseus’ story is very similar, yet very different to that of Ulysses Everett McGill in O Brother Where Art Thou. Ulysses is an escapee from prison and is on a mission to reach home to prevent his wife from
Nevertheless, the rendition broadens audiences of my work to “movie people” who do not enjoy reading. Though, reading the play adds a new level to the movie experience by creating an interesting way to watch the characters come to life. In fact, character trait synthesization and division, specifically of Malvolio, adds a new level of comedy as well as the modern-day edits and twists like the soccer and debutante elements. The details that Fickman included caused me to laugh out loud. I particularly enjoyed the Stratford Junior League (Stratford is my hometown), Cesario’s Pizza, Illyria prep school, and Duke’s friends, Andrew Aguecheek and Toby Belch. “She’s the Man” most definitely has differences from 12th Night, but its lightheartedness, attention to details, and character similarities make the film an enjoyable
When reading “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” my foremost impression is that it’s a very suspenseful story. The writing has a sort of still and detached feeling to it that makes the reader feel like an outsider. While character thoughts are occasionally stated, motivations aren’t openly shown and it’s hard to find much character development unless careful examination is made. Being interested in psychology, I found these nuances interesting. Even so, I initially didn’t find the characters likable. The grandmother, for instance, is very self-centered. When she mentions that there’s a murderer running loose in the family’s designated vacation area, she doesn’t do so out of concern. Rather, she just wants to go somewhere else and is “seizing at every chance to change [her son’s] mind.” When her family begins getting killed, she never begs for their lives, but is preoccupied with pleading for her own, telling the Misfit that he “ought not to shoot a lady” (348).
The story in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the grandmother did not want to travel to Florida on their vaction. Instead, convinced her son Bailey, to let the children see Tennessee, and avoiding the chances of having the family meet with the misfits that are loose in Florida. Unfortunately, Bailey accidently drove into a ditch, and the grandmother climbed back up the road to signal for help, but backfired. Their help were the misfits, who ended the lives of everyone without mercy, nor hesitation. The grandmother desperately trying to stay alive, have lost her family, and her life. The misfit have been known to have no mercy for killing the family, but the grandmother smiles after her death as if the misfits saved her from herself.
In the She’s The Man (2006), Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) cross dresses for the majority of the film, pretending to be her twin brother Sebastian. She does this in order to play for Illyria’s men’s soccer team as her school, Cornwall, cut the women’s soccer team and wouldn’t allow her to play for the men’s team. Her main motivation is to beat her former schools team and prove to them that even though she is a girl, she can play on the same field as the boys. While pretending to be Sebastian, Viola initially struggles to hide her femininity, such as when it is discovered that she has tampons in her bag. As the movie progresses her ability to hide this femininity and express masculinity becomes easier. Her cross dressing has an effect on everything and everyone around her and it pushes the line on the comfort people feel when stereotypical gender norms are challenged/ She becomes interested in her roommate, Duke (Channing Tatum) and throughout the movie the two become closer on an intimate level even though Viola is still masked as Sebastian. Duke is obviously uncomfortable with this as made evident by the end of the movie, when it is revealed that Viola was pretending to be Sebastian the entire time. His look of relief reinforces this idea of stereotypical, heterosexual gender roles, as now that Viola is revealed as a female, it is socially acceptable to be attracted to her. She’s The Man reinforces the stereotypical gender roles that society expects out of
Bravery is not inherent, it is rather acquired from the circumstances or situation faced in the life. People face lot of problems in their lives and to cope with those situations and move in with one's life is the sheer example of being brave. The same has been depicted by both the authors in their respective books. First by Kaye Gibbons in her very famous book "Ellen Foster" where in the protagonist is shown as homeless girl with no one to take care of, yet she finds a way to live her life and find herself a house worth living. Second, by Mark twain in his
In this film, She’s the Man Olivia Hastings revolves around gender portrayal and her objection to join a men’s soccer team. She’s the Man demonstrates gender representation of femininity and masculinity through a number of characters. Olivia gets rejected and unable to join the men’s soccer team which shows how empowering it can be to be a female. Oliva’s brother Sebastian Hastings goes to London as his band got a spot to perform at a music festival for 2 weeks, so Olivia disguises to be Sebastian to be able to join the male soccer team. Both power and gender are big roles in the film as Viola continuously switches from being female to male and shows how much power both genders get.
Malvolio is deeply in love with Olivia, whom he is a servant to. He has often received negative signals from her, but he does not pay attention to them. Malvolio receives a note that Maria left for him as a trick and Malvolio quickly believes that it is from Olivia to him. Malvolio is so content with the idea of Olivia finally showing her affection for him that he doesn't question why, in the note, she asks him to act so oddly or hear the snickering of the pranksters watching him.
movie varies greatly from the original play. The frivolous tone of this adaptation fails to epitomize the historical setting, depth of characters, and poetic magnificence of this comedic play. In She’s The Man the plot revolves around Viola, and her struggle to be recognized as a professional soccer player. When the girls’ team at her school is cancelled, she decides to disguise herself as her twin brother Sebastian (who coincidentally leaves for London to pursue his passion in music) in order to join the boys’ soccer team at his boarding school. However she is instantly captivated by her new roommate Duke Orsino, and he asks her to divulge his fervent and vehement love for their classmate Olivia. The movie essentially modernizes the play in order to remove the boring stigma associated with Shakespeare’s plays but with some futile additions that distort or are gross misrepresentations of the original play.
In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Gun control laws in the United States have been established for many years but to maintain a civilized society with limited crime stronger control laws need to be enforced in which will help reduce crime in our country. Establishing stronger gun control laws will educate
In Shakespeare’s play, Malvolio and Maria both wish to do this; one by courting Olivia, and the other by trying to get closer to Sir Toby. The main difference between the two characters is Malvolio’s self-adulation and lust for power in comparison of Maria’s cleverness and her willingness to put her immediate wants aside to ultimately satisfy her craving for a better social standing at a later time. Malvolio’s immediate addiction to power and wish to get revenge on others overcomes any will he could have to play a part to access a higher social status.
Maria and the conspirators decide to mislead Malvolio into thinking that Olivia is in love with him. Maria decides to lead him on by writing a letter, but means to be from Olivia. This love letter is meant to instruct Malvolio to do actions that Olivia despises. Maria is able to mislead Malvolio because she has the same print and seal as Olivia. Shakespeare is able to trick the characters and create many portrayals of them.
Through the play each character’s behavior is changed. The biggest change in behavior was that of Malvolio who began to believe in his own delusion. This delusion made him believe that the fair Lady Olivia loved him. His delusional state got him locked up in a shackles and isolated. This state of mind is an effect of love for him. Then the Lady Olivia’s behavior when she is not in love is a melancholy state. She had just lost her brother and her
