Many Native Americans expressed themselves with their artwork carved into totem poles. They hold messages by those that carve them. The figures carved on a Totem pole might include, animals, birds or insects and might also have mythological creatures, especially animal spirits. The figures that I chose to exhibit were animals. Those animals were the wolf, the cat, the owl, the bear, and the butterfly. They are all very important, especially the butterfly which represents Cole. The wolf is one of the world’s most misunderstood creatures. It is mistaken for an evil, cruel, menacing killer, but that is far from the truth. The wolf is a friendly creature with a high sense of loyalty. They are leaders. I chose the wolf as one of the symbols because just …show more content…
The butterfly was what I chose to represent Cole. The butterfly’s stages of life can represent our stages of life-pains, vulnerability, and expansion. In short, the butterfly is a symbol of transformation. Cole’s whole life changed to such an extreme to such an extreme that he was unrecognizable at the end of his “transformation.” In the beginning of the novel, Cole seemed like a heartless, cruel person. I learned that he had a reason behind it though. That still didn’t change the fact that he did horrible things. Even when he went to the island the first time, I didn’t feel bad. But once he was mauled and realized he was absolutely no match for nature, his “metamorphosis” had begun. Cole had started to appreciate the things around him, and the ones that were given to him- like the atoow. His parents had divorced, which made his mother change, too. When Edwin and Garvey brought Cole back to the island, there was a major difference. The butterfly also represents to keep our faith. Cole most definitely strived to be a good person and survive. By the time Edwin and Garvey leave the island, Cole seems utterly different. He doesn’t just seem different...he
The Gwaii Haanas Totem Poles represent and commemorate ancestry, histories, people, and or events. Each totem pole is designed differently with beings or crest animals. These markings show a family lineage and the rights and privileges that each family held during the time they lived in. Some totem poles honoured a specific event or person, and others are visual representation of kinship. These totem poles don’t really tell stories, they are documents of how each family lived or what they did. Totem poles were first brought up by the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest. During the First Nations they had what was called memorial or commemorative poles. These poles were often created, by their successor,

Wolves are a vital part of animal's well being. In the book Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat, Mowat goes to study wolves in the middle of barren Canada. In Canada he meets an Eskimo named Mike and he stays in his cabin while he finds a wolf den to study. He studies how pups grow up and how the wolves hunt, also their diet. He finds out how the caribou are disappearing, and estimates how many are killed in a certain amount of time. Along with many other things Mowat uses Logos with Personification and Characterization to explain how the wolves are not savage killers.
the author Farley Mowat uses many rhetorical strategies to illustrate to the reader that wolves are not bloodthirsty beasts, but rather friendly, logical, and emotional animals that we have no reason to fear. People have an instinctual adversity to predatory animals such as wolves and even though fear is a natural reaction we should try to suppress it, and see wolves for what they really are. The people that the author met in the Canadian north based their fears of wolves solely on stories passed down through generations. Of all his strategies Mowat’s most effective persuasive appeals were logos, personification, and tone.
Structure is salient, especially in literature. So much can be revealed solely through the way a novel is written. Two prime examples of this are Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Alternating points of view are present in both, and that detail exposes connections between two seemingly unrelated novels. Although Richard Mayhew and Dedé Mirabal are two very different characters, they share the struggle of loss and a lack of ipseity, but are resilient and overcome their hardships, which is shown constantly throughout each novel.
After taking bold political action, a young man sets off on a boat to America in order to escape from the oppressive Haitian government. Soon after setting sail and leaving his lover back in Haiti, the lover receives a message from a butterfly. The superstition goes that “The bright ones bring happy news and the back ones warn us of death.”(5). In this instance the butterfly is black and warned the young man's lover of his death. The lover didn’t want anything to do with the butterfly, and “[she] began to run and run so it wouldn't land on [her], but it had already carried it’s news.”(24) The butterfly represents the death of the young man who needs to escape his oppressive society in order to reach a better life in America. If the young mad had not attempted to leave, he would have been thrown in prison and tortured by the government, so he didn’t have much of a
Butterflies are often used to reveal big ideas. As an example, Simon description of said wildlife changes throughout the novel following changes in his personal life. Butterflies go from “returning to their roots,”(58) to “deserting the open space.”(151). The opposing ways that butterflies are mentioned creates the idea that they symbolize Simon no longer conforming to the group’s idea of a submissive follower. Simon is instead having revelations of his own and choosing to follow a different path. Simon being comfortable in his own skin and aware that you know what’s best for yourself shows a maturity he previously lacked. In the same manner Jack provides an image of butterflies being too preoccupied in the clearing to stop dancing.(149). The authors word choice develops the idea of Jacks savagery because it is eerily similar to the phrase associated with characters killing. Yet again the butterflies represents Jack. It seems to reveal how Jack is to focused on the pleasure he gets from taking a life to feel any remorse and stop. Remorse is necessary to prove a person still has trace amounts of good in them. recognizing the
Jimmy Garoppolo will make 42.6 Million dollars more than Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield was voted the best player in NCAA football and Jimmy Garoppolo was a 2nd string QB at the beginning of the year. Jimmy Garoppolo make 469 times the average american male’s salary. Baker Mayfield is going to college for free but he still deserves a portion of the money that the college makes. Colleges can make a upward of $100 MIllion from 1 sport and what do they do with all that money? Yes they may have expenses but they still have money left over. NCAA athletes deserve to get paid because for the most part their statistics are better, they make money for the college, and they are the future.
Totems hold great significance as they represent connections with the land, the Dreamtime and ancestors.
I was in a dark, moss-ridden dungeon where the air vigorously hung with the scent of death and suffering. Chains lay on the cobblestone walls, with hammered metal shackles on the cracked stone floor. My lab coat collected dust like a dead old skeleton six feet under. The gun felt gelid on my temple, my scrawny legs were shaking extremely fast, I thought they would run away but I knew I could escape.
Native Americans use many different ways of incorporating nature into their oral traditions. The respect for each creature is evident in the way they are portrayed.
Myths play a large role in Native American totem poles, this is not really a surprise because Native people believed in more superstitious things. They believed that many living beings in nature had either spirits or gods. With these outlooks on nature and life, those beliefs came back to their carvings on totem poles. Respecting spirits and gods of the land was huge for Native Americans, such as showing

The wolf was once a much slandered animal. In the western world, people feared and hated wolves, and this legacy is reflected in stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In these popular children's tales the wolf is made out to be a prowler and a killer of livestock and people. There is some basis for The Boy Who Cried Wolf, for wolves have killed cattle and sheep. But what of Little Red Riding Hood? There are no records of wolves killing humans in Canada or the United States. Yet, when wolves were spotted near rural communities, fear used to grip the populace, but over time this has become less prevalent.
