“All decent parents want to do what’s best for their children. [They] just have a totally different idea of how to do that” (Amy Chua). All around the world parents strive to be the “perfect” parent, but ultimately they desire to determine a style of parenting that will help their child be successful. For many years, there have been arguments about whether the Eastern or Western style of parenting is the most effective type of parenting. Western parents are very encouraging and they provide positive reinforcement and a nurturing environment. On the other hand, Eastern parents are strict and they demand perfection from their child because they know that they are capable of it. However, the most effective style of parenting is a balance between both Eastern and Western styles by encouraging independence, not letting them give up on their dreams and passions, and by enforcing their child to do their best.
In order to be a better parent, parents must encourage their child to become more independent. Parents must not solve all of their child's problems for them. Being independent means not relying on another or others for aid or support. If a child becomes independent, then they are able to determine the path they want to go, and they are able to make their own choices in life. Parents also need to make sure they are not over-parenting their child, because then the child will become overly dependent on their parents. “Over-parenting is not letting your kids take the consequences
