Even though Heaney’s literature if very influenced by his life in Ireland and contains great depth, the general themes remain painless and relatable. Heaney reflects simplicity through his short phrases, straightforward but philosophical diction and syntax, and reference to place, to reveal his perspective on the underappreciated beauty of the most basic ideas.
Meanwhile, both “Popular Street” and “Second Thoughts on Winter Afternoon” the author’s tone is different, but they convey the same theme. “Popular Street,” uses a playful and humorous tone. In contrast with, “Second Thoughts on Winter Afternoon” which is full of depth and sad emotions. “Popular Street” entertains the stranger with a playful tone by saying “Oh. Sorry. Hello. Are you on your way to work, too?”(line, 1-2) The author utilizes a playful and humorous tone while conversing with the stranger. In contrast with the second poem, “Second Thoughts on a Winter Afternoon” has an emotional and depth of sadness. The tone of “Second Thoughts on a Winter Afternoon” is expressing the author’s sadness to his partner that he’s facing with
