Comparing 'Animal Farm And The Truman Show'

George Orwell and Peter Weir both explore the ideas of power, the good life and utopia through using different stories with either very similar or different outcomes. Peter Weir is the director of ‘The Truman Show’ which is about a man called Truman that was adopted by a company so he could become a star of a T.V. show that he believes is the ‘real’ world. George Orwell is the author of the novel ‘Animal Farm’ which is about animals fighting for freedom and equality. The essay will help explain the differences and similarities that Weir and Orwell think of the ideas of power, the good life and utopia.
Firstly, Weir and Orwell explain how power can be abused through different stories. In ‘The Truman Show’ Truman decides that he wants to escape his town Seahaven, but Christof uses his power to ‘protect’ him from the real world. Weir shows through Christof that some leaders can start to mistake protection with control when Christof starts a storm so Truman would die, rather than him entering the real world. In ‘The Truman Show’ Truman loved to explore and dreamed of becoming an explorer, but was always discouraged from doing what he truly enjoyed and was passionate about doing. Weir shows through this example that if people don’t have the freedom to do what they love, they won’t be able to have a utopia. In ‘Animal Farm’ the animals wanted to live by the rules that made them feel happy and the last one that they created was ‘all animals are equal’ (page 17). Orwell shows through this example that to have a utopia everyone needs to play their role and have equality, otherwise if unfairness is created it will soon lead to conflict and war.
