Grendel and Beowulf are being compared to the nine noble virtues. The nine noble virtues explains what a hero should be and what characteristics make them noble. The characteristics are what you expect from a hero. Courage, Truth, Honor, Fidelity, Discipline, Hospitality, Self-Reliance, and Perseverance are the Nine Noble Virtues. According to the Vikings, these traits are what make a hero noble. Grendel and Beowulf have some of these virtues. Grendel and Beowulf are similar in some ways through the virtues. Beowulf portrays the Nine Noble Virtues better than Grendel because of his Courage, to stand up against Grendel. Truth, he believes what is right is the right thing to do. Honor, he sticks to the idea that he is good, and that Grendel is and will always be evil. Fidelity, he will always fight for his kingdom and his friends. Industriousness, he fights hard against Grendel and works hard to defeat him. Self-Reliance, he doesn’t rely on weapons or other people to fight Grendel. And Perseverance, Beowulf defeats Grendel, and never gives up. Grendel only has five of these nine traits while Beowulf has seven out of the nine. Meaning that Beowulf is nobler than Grendel.

Maybe I have a slight bias, but in my eyes my Daddy is one of the best people I know and someone I strive to be more like. Is my Daddy like the hero Beowulf or the monster Grendel? John Gardner’s story of Grendel and the original poem of Beowulf have many literary similarities, as well as many differences. Each story is composed of archetypal characters, Anglo-Saxon values, and different aspects of viking life. Grendel is told from the perspective of a “beast from hell” as he is referred to as in the story of Beowulf, a brave hero. Beowulf is told from a human point of view, through the eyes of the glorious knight himself. In each story, the tone that the author uses is astoundingly different from the other, and gives the story its own personality. Hrothgar and his men are interesting to compare to each other in each book, as they are spoken of in different ways, depending on whose point of view the story is being told from.
There are many similarities and differences between the movie "Beowulf and Grendel", to the poem. Major differences between the movie and the poem would be Grendel himself. In the poem, he is described as an evil monster born from two demons. In the movie, Grendel is actually human, but known as a troll to the warriors and Danes. The poem doesn’t give the background of Grendel or show how the Danes killed his father and the possible reason of his revenge, like in the movie. If the witch, Selma, was not included in the storyline of the movie, the audience would not have known key information that she was used to show from more flashbacks. The witch gives more of an idea about Grendel’s past life that could have been the possibility to
The first example of similarities and differences in the movie and poem demonstrates the behavior of a hero. In both the movie and poem, Beowulf is portrayed as the same vicious monster that protected his people. He stopped at nothing to save his people from Grendel and his mother. When he overheard that Hrothgar needed his help, he didn't hesitate to lend a helping hand. In the poem, Beowulf was seen as someone that everyone looked up to because he was honest.
The story of Beowulf is a heroic epic chronicling the illustrious deeds of the great Geatish warrior Beowulf, who voyages across the seas to rid the Danes of an evil monster, Grendel, who has been wreaking havoc and terrorizing the kingdom. Beowulf is glorified for his heroic deeds of ridding the land of a fiendish monster and halting its scourge of evil while the monster is portrayed as a repugnant creature who deserves to die because of its evil actions. In the epic poem, Beowulf the authors portrays Grendel as a cold-hearted beast who thrives on the pain of others. Many have disagreed with such a simplistic and biased representation of Grendel and his role in the epic poem. John Gardner in his book, Grendel set out to change the
Greed, a word hard to explain or put into words when you are the victim. When a person feels freed they become a different person, they are no longer your friend but someone to avoid. In the two films we watched it was very interesting to see the same characters in completely different personalities but similar stories. From personal experiences and stories it is easy to see a theme in these tales. The way these similarly different men handle their situations can lead back to their priorities.
One aspect of Grendel that is alike in both stories is the way he acts. In Grendel the monster kills many people. He does it very brutally too. "Enough of that! A night for tearing heads off, bathing in blood. Except, alas, h has killed his quota for the season. Care, take care of the gold-egg-laying goose! There is no limit to desire but desire's needs." This was Grendel's law. He does not take pity on any human. From his point of view, the humans deserved this and they were going to get it. These actions are the same in Beowulf

When one first encounters the epic poem Beowulf, they are usually taken aback by the differences between the text of the Anglo Saxons at that time and our present culture. This tale of a heroic warrior, Beowulf, defeating his opponent, Grendel, is certainly different from current works of fiction. Differences in diction, context, and characters allow readers to see how different other cultures were, and whether or not these differences carry over into other cultures. It is no secret that things have changed since that time, somewhere around 580-1000 A.D. Perhaps these changes contribute to the differences encountered in various types of media about the same story. For example, Beowulf the epic poem focuses on Beowulf’s strength, whereas
In order to live a happy life you should always treat others the way you would want to be treated. The effectiveness and satisfaction of your life will be enhanced if you recognize there are two sides to everything, and understand that there is more to someone or something that meets the eye. In John Gardner's Grendel, he presents Grendel as a truly unique character, who doesn’t clearly understand the meaning of life and is continuously bullied over the way he looks and acts. Through John Gardner’s establishment of humanlike qualities in Grendel’s character, he presents a clear example of how there are really two sides to every story and life is a gift.
Spirituality is a prominent theme in both books. More specifically, the dichotomy between good and evil is one of the main themes in Beowulf, while existentialism and nihilism are the main beliefs in Grendel.
Stephan King once said “No one really forces you to do anything, you always have a choice” (King). Grendel, in both the self-titled novel and the epic, Beowulf, had a choice. He chose to make the wrong decisions and act solely based upon his feelings. Even though others feel Grendel is a monster because of fate, and he is destined to become a monster either way, Grendel is really a monster due to free will and Grendel 's loneliness, plus lack of communication causes him to be violent as well as Grendel knowing what he is doing and is aware of the choices he is making.
