Comparing Beowulf To My Parents

Comparison Essay “Beowulf” was written around the 750’s, the author is an unknown person. It’s about the prince of the Geats. Who goes to help out the neighboring people the Dane’s with their demon problem, Grendel. The “Iliad” was written around 700 B.C. by a man named Homer. The epic is about a man named Achilles who has some issues because; the prince of Troy killed his best friend.

Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.”(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, “When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins... No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.”(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem.

What defines a hero? A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. The values of an Anglo-Saxon are bravery, truth, honor, loyalty, duty, hospitality, and perseverance. Such traits define an epic hero, who with noble motivations preservers through the toughest obstacles. Beowulf is this hero, he is a true hero with true noble motivations and good intention.

Beowulf is one of the oldest poems in history, it was originally written in Anglo-Saxon, and it was told orally with many literary devices so it could be remembered throughout generations. It shows what their society was based on back in the Anglo-Saxon era. Although throughout history the poem has been changed to fit our modern day society. For example, having different values and morals and how we look at religion has all changed. In the Beowulf poem and movie there are many similarities and differences in Religion, Characterization, and Morals it highlights the value and beliefs of each society.

To be a hero can can be defined in many ways. Heros are usually associated with courage, fearlessness, noble qualities, outstanding achievements, and a kind heart. These traits are what make up an ideal contributor to society helping those in need. The word hero can have a different meaning for cultures and religions. Osama Bin Laden may be considered a hero to the radical islams but he is a horrible human being to the rest of the world. It all depends on the views of the people.

Have you ever thought about what a hero means to you? To me, a hero is someone who is courageous and who is admired for the brave accomplishments one has done. Beowulf is the perfect example of a hero. He was brave, selfless, and humble. My grandfather is also a good example of a hero, because he too, is selfless and humble.

A hero is a person who others admire for their courage, strength and  heroic acts. Hero’s enter a battlefield facing the inferior villain without any concern of their own life, the only thought on the hero’s mind is executioning the villain in order to save other people's lives. Chris Kyle was a modern day hero, because he strived to help a cause greater than himself and make the world a safer place. Beowulf was a olden day hero, he wanted glory for the acts he performed. Even though, he wanted the glory, he also wanted to save people's lives.

It is hard to be a hero, just have to be selfless and put the needs or well being of others ahead of yourself own. Heroes also usually present themselves in times of need when nobody else does, which makes them stand out, because they are selfless and put other people ahead of themselves. Beowulf showed many signs of being a hero and also showed that he was selfless. A modern day hero that could be related to Beowulf who showed the same heroic traits is Martin Luther King JR.

When I think of a hero I picture the impossible. For most people a hero may be someone they admirer, but it is much more than that. A hero is someone who is willing to take a step outside of the box and do the unexpected, someone who is willing to take the extra steps. Beowulf is a hero because he did everything voluntarily and kept good morals and ethics while doing it.

Courage is certainly a trait which every hero must possess, particularly because no one wants a hero who is a coward. Thankfully, Beowulf is no coward. When Beowulf hears of Grendel’s exploits in Denmark, he travels to the “distant” land, without hesitation, to rid the Danes of that “demon…conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God”. A hero can be defined as a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character. Beowulf possess more than a few traits of heroism. He shows his strength, courage, bravery and honor. Beowulf showed characteristics of a hero by sailing his men to Herot to defeat Grendal from terrorizing the mead hall of Shielding. He choose to fight for the good of the mankind and showed a pure heart to protect the people without expecting anything in return.

When Hollywood makes a movie that has been based off a book, there is going to be some obvious similarities but there will also be some differences that are often noticeable. Beowulf is an epic poem that had been orally told for many years up until an unknown author wrote it down around 1000 A.D. Robert Zemeckis directed the 3D epic fantasy film in 2007 that was a retelling of this epic poem. The writers take on the epic poem was interesting to watch but it did vary a lot from the poem instead of staying true to it. While there were several similarities with some of the main characters, it was evident that the writers strayed away from how the poem portrayed some characteristics that were given to them like their actions, personality, and

In other words, the film is different from the poem through characterization, representation of women, and the different values of both Anglo Saxon and modern societies. Unlike the film, characters are represented differently than they were in the poem.
