Comparing Change Management Approaches Essay

The purpose of this article is to compare the two change management approaches such as Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Total Quality Management (TQM).The article gives a detail study of evolution and definitions of these two approaches and find out the similarities and differences exists between these two approaches. The article concludes that these two approaches have differences more than similarities. Instead of these differences both approaches used to increase efficiencies of the organizations and are appropriate for different problems which are facing by the organizations in different scenarios.

BPR considered as radical redesign of processes and eliminated the old processes by introducing new one. Many misconceptions and misapplications were associated to BPR at that time.

Many organizations assumed BPR as another name of downsizing and an excuse of restructuring. But the Hammer & Champy who are proponents of BPR refused to accept this assumption. Some criticism were highlighted with this approach that it ignores the human element and made many jobs redundant by shifting processes to computers. But again the Hammer & Champy supported the BPR and argued that BPR practices failed when it is not implemented properly. Empowerment of employees is considered as a key to success of this approach.


All information collected in this paper through different authorized journals accessed through digital library by accessing different sites for example Emerald insight, Springer, Jstor etc and through different books of Quality Management and Process reengineering. Some books are taught by different universities as a full subject for example Allama Iqbal University has included Total Quality Management as course book under code 5575 at Master level. Likewise NUST and NUML universities have also included this subject at MS level. So information collected through these universities recommended books and class lectures.
