The texts directly states that there is good and evil shown throughout the book, Dr. Jekyll representing good, and Hyde evil. Additionally, Jekyll admits, “All things therefore seemed to point to this; that I was slowly losing hold of my original and better self, and becoming slowly incorporated with my second and worse.” (69). Jekyll tries to explain that his worse side was starting to become in control. His good side was slowly losing to his bad side and he couldn’t let that happen.
"The Strange Case of Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde" written by Robert Louis Stevenson and "Frankenstein" written by Mary Shelley, both deal with the scientists upsetting the laws of the universe. Both of the scientists, Dr. Jeykll and Frankenstein, are attempting to play God in both of the famous novels. Dr. Jeykll is trying to understand the dual nature of humans to be both good and bad, by wanting to separate the two. While Frankenstein rises to balance his intellectual and social interactions. The stories are both very similar in the fact that they both create a monster. The "monster" in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde" is presented by Dr. Jeykll. The "monster" in "Frankenstein" is presented by Frankenstein himself. In "The Strange
After the death of Alexander the Great, the empire was in complete chaos for Alexander had not named an heir. While Perdiccas suggested waiting for the birth of Alexander and Roanne’s child, I proposed to divide the kingdom amongst the leading generals. After my campaign to divide the empire, I successfully acquired the title as the ruler of Egypt. I, Ptolemy Soter Ⅰ, the Pharaoh of Egypt, have contributed greatly to the advancements of my kingdom. For starters, I have stabilized the economy and placed the administration on sound footing.
Dr. Jekyll is a man of wealth, intelligence, and good standing in the community. He had cut himself off from his friends for a time, then returned to his normal, good natured self. As the narrator states, he became “their familiar guest and entertainer, and whilst he had always been known for his charities, he was now no less distinguished for religion.” While Dr. Jekyll seems a stable, sensible man, Mr. Hyde is brutish and unstable. This can be seen as the narrator relates the story of what the maid saw from her window. Mr. Hyde had been calm, “then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane, and carrying on like a madman.” The mental states of these two men were complete opposites.
Dr. Jekyll, on the other hand, remains the same – a righteous man who happens to also be imperfect, suggesting that his plan for an equal division between good and bad was not efficient. Throughout the novel, Mr. Hyde slowly begins to take over Dr. Jekyll’s entire existence, implying that his evil nature is much stronger than his good nature. As Mr. Hyde, he felt less pressure and more powerful; he didn’t have regrets nor have to face consequences for his actions. Although he remained as one true “person”, the Hyde within Dr. Jekyll began to grow and eventually dominated his
Jekyll is tempted to do bad things and he uses Hyde to overcome his temptations. Jekyll gets his satisfaction of doing bad deeds by becoming Hyde. Jekyll says “If each, I told myself, could be housed in separate identities, life would be relieved of all that was unbearable; the unjust might go his way” (Page 105). He states that he wants to do bad things but knowing he cant and still live the life he has, he uses Hyde as an escape from his temptations. Once Jekyll is able to control his temptations but still do bad as Mr. Hyde he says “I felt younger, lighter, happier in the body” (Page 106) Mr. Hyde is Jekyll’s way of escaping his sophisticated lifestyle and entering a totally separate way of life. Jekyll then didn’t feel any guilt for Hyde’s actions.
There are reasons, why I consider Dr. Jekyll innocent by all standards of justice. According to the story Dr. Jekyll mentioned himself that he was comprised of two personalities, an evil side and a good side. He thought of the potion as a ways to drink and get out of everyday responsibilities, work and a part of his life he thought boring and to a hidden personality inside of him. In the story Dr. Jekyll clearly mentioned that his alter ego of Dr. Hyde was his confession to life itself, in a letter to Dr. Lanyon. It is because of this I don't feel Dr. Jekyll should be blamed under any circumstance or standard.
In the novel “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde” there is a theme of good vs evil. Good being Dr. Jekyll and evil Mr Hyde they have the inner fight between themselves, because they are the same person.Robert louis Stevenson uses Diction, imagery, and details to contrast the character of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde
When comparing the similarities and differences between Mary Shelley’s story of ‘Frankenstein’ and Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of ‘The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde’, it was found that although the characters in both stories suffer an unhealthy obsession/addiction to their scientific work and even though both Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll had good intentions for their creations, the outcome of the Monster and Mr. Hyde were practically opposites of one another.
Prompt 1: An Exploration of Self Self is a definition of who we are, and that definition can come from two sources: ourselves and those we are close to. The resulting person is usually some combination of the two perceptions of self. In the works The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, this idea of self is explored.
In the novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the two main characters could not be any different. Dr. Henry Jekyll is a well respected doctor, and is well established in the community. He lives in a beautiful mansion, is nicely dressed. He is known for his decency and charitable works. Jekyll did admit to having a dark side, which he was not proud of. He began to experiment with ways to release his dark side from himself. This experimentation would eventually lead to his friends and colleagues disassociating themselves from him. When a longtime friend and medical colleague, Dr. Lanyon was asked about his current relationship with Dr. Jekyll, he stated, "But it is more than ten years since Henry Jekyll became too fanciful for me. He began to go wrong, wrong in mind; and though of course I continue to take an interest in him for old sake's sake, as they say, I see and I have seen devilish little of the man. Such unscientific balderdash," added the doctor, flushing suddenly
In “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Dr. Jekyll has become lost with his inner self. He has led himself to believe that the man that he is is not the man that he wishes to be. Dr. Jekyll is now seeing himself as a man of evil, a man that people should consider dangerous. Not the man he is now, a gentle, higher class man that people enjoy to spend time with and one who people respect.
Change in life, and in every essence of the word, is inevitable. From the moment a person is born, they begin undergoing physical and psychological changes, as they develop, grow, and become their own individual. While many of these adjustments are subtle and prolonged, there are indeed others that are sudden and extreme—the latter of which may result in a nearly flipped version of the person’s original personality, producing a physical “other.” This grotesque “other” aspect of the human being has been represented in studies and media for centuries, fascinating ordinary citizens with the sheer concept that, with the possibility of a dual identity, then, perhaps, there is indeed much more to everyone than what initially meets the beholder’s
Despite saying this Jekyll still succumbs to his Id and Hyde is drawn out again. Jekyll knows of the evil that comes out when he transforms into Hyde. Jekyll says “This, as I take it, was because all human beings, as we meet them are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil”(Stevenson 108). Here Jekyll clearly states that he knows Hyde is evil yet he still cannot overpower his Id and then his Superego is overcome. By turning into Hyde, Jekyll feels free and can do whatever he wants without the slightest hesitation. Following his innate desires Hyde murders Sir Danvers Carew and tramples a young girl. These actions are done through the Id and even though Jekyll is civilized law abiding man once the Id has taken over and he transforms into Hyde, his dark side is unleashed. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are but one; one body but two conflicting characters, the good and evil.
Though Jekyll is fully responsible for his behavior and actions, Hyde is not. While Jekyll has the option to do good or evil, Hyde is completely focused on evil as this was the intent of the transformation. The fact that Jekyll chose to create a potion to bring forth Hyde rather than bringing forth someone who was concentrated on pure good shows that Even a respectable man such as Jekyll had unconscious urges to do bad. “If he had “approached [his] discovery in a more noble spirit,” willing the good to overpower the evil, he would have “come forth an angel instead of a fiend”. Hyde on the other hand has no choice other than to do evil, and therefore it is arguable whether he should really be blamed for his actions.
