Tom was born into an old-moneyed family. He was used to getting whatever he wanted. He used his charm to marry Daisy. Tom was also abusive to Myrtle when she annoyed him, slapping her face and breaking her nose when she wouldn't stop saying Daisy's name. After Myrtle is killed, Tom explained to Wilson, Myrtle's husband, that the yellow car didn't belong to him (Tom), he told Wilson who it did belong to: Gatsby. Wilson, driven by grief and wrongly assuming that Myrtle had been having an affair with Gatsby, took his shotgun and killed Gatsby and himself. In this way, Tom planted the idea in Wilson's head, thus getting rid of Tom's threat to his wife with no …show more content…
Daisy's father wanted her to marry somebody who wasn't going off to war. He wouldn't let Gatsby even propose because of this. Daisy eventually married Tom, who wasn't shipped off to war, because he came from old money. He is imperious and commanding and knows what he wants: Daisy. Even Gatsby, the man that Daisy first fell for and still loves, tries to control her by telling Tom that she never loved him, and then tries to make her say it herself. But it is too much for Daisy. Even though she loves Gatsby, she feels she cannot honestly say she has never loved Tom at
Daisy, on the other hand, seems at first as though she truly does love and care for her husband. While Tom keeps himself at a distance in both relationships, Daisy seems to possess an outright need for his company. This is supported by Jordan’s recollection of Daisy’s behavior towards Tom after marrying him: “If he left the room for a minute she’d look around uneasily and say: ‘Where’s Tome gone?’ and wear the most abstracted expression until she saw him coming in the door. She used to sit on the sand with his head in her lap by the hour, rubbing her fingers over his eyes and looking at him with unfathomable delight” (Fitzgerald, 76-77). That being said, there are in fact several signs that point toward Daisy not loving her husband at all. Perhaps the most notable is her behavior just before her and Tom’s wedding ceremony, when she is found “lying on her bed as lovely as the June night in her flowered dress – and as drunk as a monkey. She had a bottle of Sauterne in one hand and [Gatsby’s] letter in the other” (76). Daisy goes so far as to even momentarily call off the marriage altogether, ordering the bridesmaids to “tell ‘em all Daisy’s change’ her mine. Say: ‘Daisy’s change’ her mine!’” (76). Why, then, does she marry Tom after all and seem so in love with him afterwards? People usually seek out partners who will make them happy, protect them from that which they fear, etc. What does Daisy fear? She
He cares about her so much, yet Tom has been cheating on Daisy since the beginning of their relationship. It is made clear that Tom does not value her at all, so Gatsby does not deserve the pain he receives when Daisy chooses to stay with Tom over him, because of how much he loves Daisy.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was written in the 1920s during the Prohibition era. The Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s in New York. The book is narrated by Nick Carraway, who is also a protagonist in the book. Much of the book revolves around affection and scandals. In addition to the scandals, Fitzgerald has different portrayals of women.
This shocked Gatsby, which shows more that she led him to be delusional about the possibility of them having a real relationship in the future. Her making him think that started this whole argument and if she didn’t lead him on, Tom wouldn’t have found out about any of this and then he wouldn’t have told Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle. Tom is responsible for Gatsby’s death because he let Wilson believe that Gatsby had an affair with Myrtle and killed her aswell, Tom did this because he discovered that Daisy and Gatsby were having an affair and wanted to keep Daisy from leaving him. After Myrtle was hit by the car, a policeman was questioning people and asked Tom suspiciously what the color of his car was and he replied: ‘“It’s a blue car, a coupe”’(Fitzgerald 140). Wilson heard Tom say this and later on Tom came back to Wilson to speak with him.
“She never loved you, do you hear he cried. She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me (Fitzgerald 139)”. Tom is married to Daisy (Lisca). Even though daisy is marring Tom, Daisy has feeling for Gatsby (Lisca). Tom and Daisy relationship is wrong because they are married. People may say that Tom and Daisy does not love each other. When it was
Daisy and Tom are married with a young daughter. Jay Gatsby, an old boyfriend of Daisy’s, has re-entered her life and expects their relationship to be as it was before Daisy was married. Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him and that she loved Gatsby all along. He also expects her to leave Tom for him. After all of this pressure from Gatsby, Daisy decides that she will tell what Gatsby wants to hear, but instead Daisy states, “Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom, it wouldn’t be true” (Fitzgerald 140).
“He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: ‘I never loved you’ ” (Fitzgerald Chapter 6). This is when it is very clear what Gatsby is trying to accomplish, his goal is to get Daisy to abolish all the experiences she’s had with Tom. Gatsby wants Daisy to follow his ideals and to try and spark their past together. Although Daisy is stuck between choosing Tom and Gatsby, she realizes that the past cannot be relieved, because she has experienced too much with Tom, and that Tom also has a major influence in her
The novel The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel is set in the 1920s in New York. The main character, Jay Gatsby, is on a journey to achieve acceptance in society. Fitzgerald uses motifs to emphasize that the characters Tom, Daisy, and Myrtle are indirectly responsible for Gatsby’s death.
"I love you now—isn't that enough? I can't help what's past." She began to sob helplessly. "I did love him once—but I loved you too." (84) Gatsby's obsession with her seems shockingly unilateral, and it is clear to the reader that she will not leave Tom for him. You can also see why this confession is a blow to Gatsby. He has dreamed of Daisy for years and sees her as his one true love, while she not even can marshal her love of Gatsby over her love for Tom. Gatsby is too desperate and obsessed, and does not understand that he must move on as it is impossible to get back Daisy. This can also be explained by Daisy’s as we get an insight at her real feelings. As she sad in the quote, she loved them both, and to her those were equal loves. But, she has not put that initial love with Gatsby on a pedestal the way Gatsby has. Unlike Gatsby, Daisy is more tragic, a loving woman who has been corrupted by greed. She chooses the security of money and comfort over real love, and therefore he will never get back
