Comparing Honor In The Iliad And Odyssey

Good Essays

The Iliad and Odyssey, besides being continuations of the same story and being written by the same author have many themed/topic based similarities. Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey retold through epic poetry, the story of the Trojans and Greeks who battled over Troy, and those who lived to sail home. In their strange world, it seems as though honor and pride were worth more than life itself. Living without honor is sacrilege, it’s best to die with it or fighting for it than to die without it. With honor, comes fame with the gods . In this world, the divine beings that one prays to are within reach and visible. They intervene in a mortal’s everyday life and determine their fate. In both books, the reader is exposed to multiple battles in the name of achieving and regaining honor. The notion that one should try to escape death did not mean anything close to honor and glory. In the Iliad, it can be said that the whole battle started on a basis of destroyed honor. Helen being stolen was a jab at Menelaus’ honor and to regain it, he would have to fight to destroy the person that tested him no matter how many people died. Another example in the Iliad is in book one, which also coincidentally carries on throughout the whole story when Achilles is dishonored by Agamemnon’s promise to take away Briseis to which Achilles replies, “ ...should give me honor-- but now he gives me nothing… he disgraces me”. Similarly, honor in the Odyssey was just as great and damning. In both novels it seems as though the only way one could atone for the greatest dishonorment ( stealing one’s woman) is through death as we saw with Paris and Menelaus and now with all the suitors who had lay waste in Odysseus’ home. But a more specific example that showed the importance of honor would be in book …show more content…

In the Iliad the line between man and god would often clash. A god could transport a mortal, sleep with a mortal, and also magically help that mortal. These gods seem to be the only ones who can change and decide fate. The gods can whisk people away or bend off an arrow and a sword. For example, when Paris fought Menelaus, he was whisked away by Aphrodite before Menelaus could do more damage. Their so called gods, weren’t so unreachable. In the Odyssey, we see how goddess’ and gods behave just like humans with their urges; example Calypso, who offers Odysseus everything if only he would stay with her. Plus Athena, made herself Odysseus’ guardian, she would give him advice and plead his case on mount Olympus. There we see how the gods decide a person’s fate and also act selfishly with disregard to mortal feelings. Toying with humans
