Comparing Huckleberry Finn And The Secret Life Of Bees

Decent Essays

Ernest Hemingway once said, “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Secret Life of Bees, the main characters, Huckleberry Finn and Lily Owens, demonstrate their ability to resist societal pressures as young teenagers. Both characters exhibit the strength to defy social norms not to be more accepting than the majority, but to enrich themselves for the better. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck starts out as a mischievous boy seeking freedom from his alcoholic father. When Huck encounters Jim and they continue the journey together, their relationship strengthens and Huck begins to question his opinion on slavery.
