The outsiders by S.E Hinton is a novel about conflicts but not just between the rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs it’s about conflicting emotions and personalities. The two polar opposites personality wise are Johnny and Dally so how do they have such a strong connection? This essay aims to compare their differences but also their similairities. Johnny Cade is timid and shy. He has been abused by his family and had a tough life this has most likely led to him being less spoken then the rest of the gang. Not only have his parents beaten him but he was jumped only causing his self esteem to drop lower (page 15). Johnny is sensitive and caring, he wears his heart on his sleeve however Dally is quite the opposite. Dally is Tough on the exterior and acts like nothing can touch him. At the start of the novel it is stated that Johnny doesn’t like fights however after getting jumped he won’t let it happen again however in the same circumstances Dally would gladly fight. However as the story progresses these characters progress with it especially after Johnny stabs someone in an act of self-defence.
