Comparing Journey's End 'And Oh What A Lovely War'

Compare and contrast the presentation of human weakness in R.C Sherrifs ‘Journey’s End’ with the presentation of the same theme in ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre workshop. How far do you agree that human with the view that ‘Journey’s End’ presents human weakness more sympathetically? While both plays offer an exploration of human weakness, I agree that human weakness is presented more sympathetically in ‘Journey’s End’. ‘Journey’s End’ was written in 1929, shortly after the war had ended. It could be argued that the close proximity to the war means that Sherriff approaches the subject of war delicately, respecting the audience of the time who would have still been recovering from the devastation of war. In contrast Theatre Workshop’s ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ was written in the 1960s, a time of great social change and, arguably, a period in which the public was starting to become slightly more cynical, or least less sympathetic to war, having lived through two of them. …show more content…

Sherriff uses the play’s main protagonist, Stanhope, as well as Hibbert, to present human weakness allowing the theme to be fully explored and developed. In contrast to this ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ is set over the entire duration of the war with numerous generic characters that are anonymised, for example “Germany”, “Britain” and “France”.
