Electronic navigation systems are presently a very significant component of marine, land and aeronautic navigation as a result of their important role in ensuring safe navigation. Navigation is according to Oxford Dictionaries (n.d.) “The process or activity of accurately ascertaining one’s position and planning and following a route”. They help navigators to locate their positions in land, sea and air. In marine navigation, there are many types of navigation systems were used by mariners. Some of them are land- based navigation systems such as Loran- C, Decca and Omega. Others are satellite- based navigation systems like GLONASS, GALILEO, and GPS (Anwar, 2006). This essay shall compare between Loran- C and GPS navigation systems to prove …show more content…
The point at which these two LOPs intersect is the vehicle’s position (Khalique, 2011). Loran-C do not only provide with positioning services, it also provide “timing services for both civil and military air, land and marine users” (Navigation Center, 2012). In the past, Loran-C was one of the main navigation systems in many parts of the world. However, in the present time, it does not play the same role and do not have the same importance as before. In fact, some of its main operators and maintainers (the US) stopped their Loran-C signal i.e. stopped using Loran-C because it became an old system that no longer in use as a result of the emergence of new technologies (Navigation Center, 2012). GPS has the ability to fix its users’ positions in three dimensions (longitude, latitude and altitude). Moreover, it enables its users to determine their ships or planes velocity and their time (Navigation Center, 2012). GPS is also a radionavigation system like Loran-C. However, it is based on satellites not on land transmitters like Loran-C. GPS consists of three parts: 27 satellites orbiting the earth (in 2006), which are provided by atomic clocks and have a period of 12 hours; control stations, that supervise the satellites performance and send navigation messages contain updates for the satellites (clocks updates, for instance). The third part is the user, which consists of GPS receivers (Khalique, 2011). The GPS determine positions by transmitting
There is no longer a need to be a skilled map reader as GPS can provide directions anywhere to the most unskilled navigators, whether it be to a hospital for emergency treatment or a local point of interest for tourists and finds the shortest route16, making travel easier. GPS can also be used to track others16 which has made it far easier to find missing persons as with GPS becoming prevalent in phones and car, almost anyone can be tracked by one of these items. The impact of GPS on travel is unfathomable, it has made the method of navigation that was used for centuries almost obsolete and opened up the world to
Modern day sailors are trained to know the functioning and operation of all modern day navigational equipment. Tools used by early popular sea voyages were very complex and required people of very high intelligence to use the devices. I am going to talk about and compare some of the devices.
He used a hand bearing compass, pointed at a lighthouse or some other landmark and looked across the lubber’s line into the bowl, taking bearings of two or more objects, and reading the direction or bearing of that object, off of the compass. Then, he plotted them onto his chart. Where the lines crossed, was where he was. It was that simple. The GPS was for his clients. It made them feel better, not him.
Be able to list and describe the 3 main tools used to measure latitude in early navigation
Lots of people around the world use GPS on their phones and in their cars. Before the Space Race and GPS’s, it would take people much longer to get to their
GPS software can be installed on all devices so that if they do go missing they can be found.
My explore pt is GPS, gps is now very useful in our daily life, it is used to navigate, and in our modern life there are several types of GPS that be applied in many different ways like meteorological satellite, and of cause navigation satellite and so on
Navigation in ancient times, centuries before such advances as radios, satellites and GPS, relied upon sight, sound and knowledge. The first journey’s upon the sea no doubt relied upon sight and used the costal shores to navigate. Remaining in sight of land to fish and journey short distances along the coast. Venturing farther from shore using unique or recognizable formations as landmarks, the position of the sun, clouds and other indicators of land. The Phoenicians
The development of the Global Positioning System, GPS for short, was accelerated by Sputnik in more than one way. When Sputnik launched, Guier and Wieffenback were able to measure the doppler shift in the signal that was broadcast from Sputnik and successfully estimate the location of Sputnik. After telling their Laboratory’s Director about their discovery they were granted
GPS is a great part of technology in our world, the first GPS system was used for military and now anyone that has a
Throughout the history of time, different cultures have held the title of master navigators. During the Han Dynasty, the Chinese invented the first compass, a device made out of lodestone – a naturally magnetized metal – and a bronze plate. Then, Arab mariners perfected astrological sea-faring, using the stars to guide themselves across the world’s waterways. But the ancient world’s true masters of navigation were early Polynesians.

GPS gives the distance without calculation and gives you idea of the weather condition. Quadrant is a down grade to the Gyroscopic Compass. Quadrant helps you find the north but can be effect but earth magnetic field. The Gyroscopic Compass is always pointing to the real northern star and dont use the earth magnetic field to find the northern star. Sunglass was more harder to to keep up with time you had to turn the glass every hour. The ditigal clock is hand free and you dont have to turn it every hour. Columbus had to use his own eye site to delect something but he could only see so far. Radar of would delected something miles away without having to keep watch 24/7 of ships surrounding. Columbus got off course often and had to correct himself but with Long Range Navigation Columbus could of found where his Ship was and got back on course. If Columbus had a Depth Sounder he would of be able to see under the water to make sure he didnt hit nothing and even could see the fish under the water for Columbus could catch them for
There are 24 satellites that circle the earth every 12 hours. These satellites are split into six groups of four and each group creates an orbital plane. These six orbital planes allow the satellites to move in a way that covers the earth completely. GPS satellites transmit signals to equipment on the ground. An example is a GPS receiver (GPS receiver can only receive the signals form the satellites but they can’t transmit any signals). The receivers work best in an open outdoor area where there is a clear view to the sky. At any time there are always four visible satellites. The GPS receiver can calculate how far each satellite is based on the time it took the signal to reach the receiver. Using the distance from each satellite that the receiver calculated it could then use a process called trilateration to pinpoint the location of the receiver [1].
GPS has made our lives so much easier. We don't have to print out directions before heading to an unknown address. GPS-enabled devices we carry with us daily allows us to travel freely without worrying about getting lost. There are also a number of GPS devices to help us keep track of our children. It's a dangerous world out there, and at any moment, we might need to know where our children are located.
