Be Remembered: “Unfortunately, in some parts of the country, some kids are taught at an early age that being different is somehow bad or wrong or worthy of ridicule.” Society rejects the individuals who “march to a different drum”. People do not cheer for the Tackys, but inadvertently crush their spirits. Although society does not initially cheer for the “Tackys” in the world, history demonstrates that these individuals prove to be the most remembered and the most influential people. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Tacky. Luther was an American Baptist minister and an activist leader in the African- American Civil Rights movement. He fought for the rights African Americans lacked. His sexually provocative performance style horrified the public and was regarded as vulgar and inappropriate, but Presley’s smooth looks, voice, and charming personality eventually won society over. Elvis Presley Enterprises states Elvis had forty top ten hits. Presley is now considered one of the most symbolic cultural icons of the 20th century. Elvis Presley is referred to as “The King of Rock and Roll”. Society does not understand how to process individuals like Presley who are not a “carbon copy” of itself. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Elvis Presley were rejected, but society’s mind was challenged and changed. Why is it that the people changed their minds and decided that these individuals were worthy of remembrance? Their unique personality traits encourage an alternative perspective that fosters innovation. Society originally rejects individuals who are unlike itself. These people eventually become the most well-known folks that have changed the world. Both Martin Luther and Elvis Presley prove this indication to be correct.
