Comparing Modern Fashion to Fashion of the Past

Modern day fashion is a more carefree approach. There aren’t usually any rules when it comes what to wear, and women are granted the freedom to choose what they would prefer to wear. Women generally enjoy this aspect of society, since many things are still controlled. Unlike the Elizabethan women, modern women prefer to wear jeans on an average day. T-shirts with fun, different sayings on them are often times paired with jeans. Some women even prefer to wear men’s clothing, such as jeans and loafers. Most women often wear shirts that show a little more cleavage than what would be seen as appropriate in Elizabethan times, as seen in Figure two. (Modern day 1) Commonly, women are classified by what sort of brands they wear, or what type of style they have, like the Elizabethans.

With over thousands of clothing collections from prehistoric life to the present, the Museum of London, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Fashion Museum in Bath allow visitors to observe the many changes that occurred in fashion throughout the years. With my prior knowledge about the 1800s fashion styles, I began to focus on a different era within the 19th century at each museum. Focusing on different eras enabled me to thoroughly analyze and compare each fashion style.

This essay will explore the effects social and political changes had on fashion in the 1980’s. This period was chosen because the new romantic fashions were so different to the punk fashions that had been before, this essay will therefore identify the changes that had taken place to influence this change. Primary evidence used to support findings will include interviews and photographs which will show a firsthand account of the period.

Fashion is very important in modern day society, and can be seen all around. Most of what people know about fashion today came from the fashion during the renaissance. From the vibrant fabrics to the spectacular jewels, renaissance fashion has been thoroughly threaded in the fashion of modern society. Modern day women often wear shorty, fun gowns, tightly fitting jeans, and lower cut tops. Popular fashion trends for men in modern society include saggy jeans, V-neck shirts, and stylish watches. “A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so unbearable that we are compelled to alter it every six months” (Oscar Wilde). Fashion in modern day society is ever changing, but most changes do not stray too far from the original product.

Marilyn Monroe once said “Women's cloths should be tight enough to show that you're a woman, but also show that you're a lady.” Seeing women in the 50’s, many of them looked up at famous or well known models or actors such as Marilyn Monroe. We see hats and sunglasses, start to be involved in their attire. Jewelry and makeup start to blend with the fashion, We also see the pencil and poofy dresses being worn. Women that work in formal places where high heels and pant suits to look professional. Today we see some girls pay hundred of dollars on dresses, and in the 50’s women would pay anywhere from 99 cents to fifty dollar dresses (1950’s Fashion). The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. Imagine you’re going back in time. Then, THUNK, you’re plopped down in a street. You look at newspaper and find you’re in 1903. Then, this happens again, and again, going into 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and all the other decades in the 20th century. You saw how womens fashion changed many times, and in many ways in 20th century America.

As technology continues to progress fashion evolves right alongside. Before the invention of the tv the way to spread different styles and outfits was through sketches and designs. By this means it would take extended amounts of time to spread ideas of fashion from one place to another. The influence of technology on the fashion industry cannot be overlooked. Fashion is being rapidly offered to consumers at an amazingly fast rate. Nowadays anybody can have anything they want within the reach of a button on a phone or computer screen, fashion is instantaneous. This essay will be considering the historical development of haute couture by analysing Charles Frederick Worth’s (father of haute couture) key factors in the success of haute Couture. I will then discuss Coco Chanel’s thriving impact on haute couture as well as ready-to-wear caused by the second world war. Saint Laurent’s drift to ready-to-wear and the high street fashion system will also be discussed in order to answer if haute couture is relevant in fashion today. The books I will be analysing and referencing are ‘A Cultural History of Fashion in the 20th Century’ by Bonnie English, ‘Couture’ by Ruth Lynam, ‘How Fashion Works’ by Gavin Waddell. Which will thoroughly breakdown the evolution and historical development of fashion by cultural, economic, environmental and social changes to finally come into a conclusion.

A lot has changed and evolved in the history of fashion since the 1900s. As the century dawned, fashion was an exclusive enterprise, the pursuit of wealth. The average person in society settled for garments that were usually stitched at home. With time, however, networks of neighborhood tailors began to evolve into a retail history and the boom was followed by boutique selling.
