‘O’ is a film that is moulded to fit into contemporary society so it can be better understood by today’s audience. Othello, written by Shakespeare, is set in Venice and the Island of Cyprus whilst O is set at a modern day high school where their basketball team is fighting for the state title. ‘As iron is eaten away by rust, so the envious are consumed by their own passion.’ – Antisthenes. This quote is shown in Othello and O as Iago becomes envious of Othello’s achievements, only then to finally destroy himself. Every Shakespeare tragedy has the main character having a major flaw. Othello sees the world as black and white, which makes him easy for Iago to manipulate; destroying him from the inside out.
Othello’s jealousy is what tears him

I know not if 't be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety.” (Act1.Scene 3.329-433) Previously, Iago said he hates Othello because "the Moor" passed him over for a promotion. Yet, here, Iago says he hates Othello because he's heard a rumour that Othello has been hooking up with Iago's wife, Emilia, "twixt sheets." Iago says he doesn't exactly know if the rumour’s true, but he's decided to go ahead and ruin Othello's life.
Prejudice is a strong theme in both Othello and O. Iago’s plan would have failed without the underlying atmosphere of racial prejudice in both Venetian and American society, a prejudice which both Othello and Desdemona are aware of. In Othello, Desdemona copes with prejudice by denying it has access to her own life and rules over her. She admits that her relationship with Othello is one of love, and she is deliberately loyal only to her marriage. However Othello is completely unaware of how prejudice has infiltrated his life and personality. This causes Othello to ask him the questions of “not being good enough” and “am I unattractive?” These questions are caused by Iago’s lies and hints, and prevent Othello from discussing his concerns and fears directly with Desdemona, and so he acts on panicked
He is miraculously described as one of the best known pharaohs of ancient Egypt, the 12th king of the 18th century Egyptian dynasty, successor to this dynasty following his powerful father King Akhenaten, his historic name possess the meaning "the living image of Aten.” Who is this almighty historic discovery, that was perhaps one of the most remarkable in Egyptian excavation? He is King Tutankhamun, more commonly referred to as King Tut. The discovery of his tomb on Novermber 4, 1922 led to findings that included jewelry, gold furniture, and countless remaining artifacts. Now, according to the book king Tutankhamun himself was not discovered until Howard Carter (an English archeologist) “pierced the wall separating the anteroom from the actual
This case explores the operating exposure of Jaguar PLC in 1984, just as the government is about to relinquish control and take the company public via an IPO. The primary concern of the CFO is that Jaguar sells over 50% of its cars in the US, while its production costs and factories are U.K.-based. This currency mismatch creates operating exposure for the firm that needs to be hedged.
For me, I think “O” movie was a god modern-day translation of “Othello” by William Shakespeare. The themes and ideas of Shakespeare Williams were translated to the movie and that he will agree with the modernization. I’ m going to compare and contrast the characters, plot and setting from the book and movie to prove my point.
‘Othello is one of the brilliant plays written by William Shakespeare. It is the story of man named Othello and how his mind was twisted and manipulated by a man named Iago and how Iago made Othello think that his wife Desdemona was cheating on him with his lieutenant Michael Cassio, which results in many deaths. Tim Blake Nelson has creatively restructured ‘Othello’ into a film to appeal to a teenage audience. It still contains the same central ideas which are racism, jealousy and deception which will be analysed on how they are portrayed in ‘Othello’ and are creatively reshaped in ‘O’.
The Shakespearean play Othello is about how a black military leader in Venice is undone by an elaborate plan thought up by Iago to overthrow Othello and obtain Othello’s high position in Venice’s military society. Othello was set in the late 16th century, when Venice’s trade was threatened by the growing power of the Turkish Empire. The setting in itself prognosticates a rapid downfall, as during Shakespeare’s time, as Venice would have been synonymous with luxury and culture, but as
From a visual perspective, the film is captivating, especially the love scene between Othello and Desdemona. To say that this is based on the O.J Simpson trial is perplexing. Although Parker does selectively reduce the dialogue from Shakespeare’s play, all that has been selectively captured and included from the play, is straight out of the play. Although there is no basis between the film and the O.J Simpson trial the commonality between the true is that they both invite the audience to look and think about how conscious we are about the issues of race within society. Unlike 400 years ago, in modern society, it is very much impossible to ignore Iago’s character and not determine that he is in fact a racist. The symbolism used by Parker where Iago delivers his monologue over the chess board, where the chess pieces have been positioned to show a black king opposing a white queen and knight, is used to clearly illustrate Iago’s manipulative character in trying to make Othello question whether Desdemona is even attracted to him because of his colour. Instead, Iago pairs both the white queen and the white knight signifying a more likely choice for Desdemona would be Cassio.
There are many instances where Othello is respected for his position within the Venetian military, but is often spoken about negatively behind his back. This is most apparent through the conflict of the play involving Iago and Othello. Iago goes about telling lies about Othello as a result of his frustration from not being promoted. He goes along spreading false news that Desdemona is being unfaithful and keeping things from Othello. While Othello slowly falls into a spiral of rage and jealousy from these lies. Iago slowly turns Othello from the noble Moor into the jealous beast that the Elizabethans would be afraid of. One can infer that the white man, Iago is believed because much of the other society is white as well. However, when Othello makes his plea and searches for truth, no one hears him because he is a Moor, which ultimately leads to his downfall. Even in the earlier parts of the play, Iago berates Othello by calling him an old black ram bewitch a white ewe (Desdemona). The dichotomy between black and white is apparent here and Othello’s military ranking does not allow him to evade this racial remark. His color is more recognizable than his rank and that does not save him from the prejudices of Iago and the rest of the other characters aside from Desdemona. In further instances, Iago tells Brabantio that Othello is like a barbary horse that will corrupt his pure daughter. Iago says
*INTRO*The character Oedipus in the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles, and the character Othello in the play Othello the Moor of Venice by Shakespeare are both tragic characters. Oedipus ends up killing his father, and marrying and having children with his mother, whereas Othello ends up mistrusting and killing his wife. These two individuals have similarities and differences in several aspects such as the roundness of their characters, the retribution that they incur upon themselves and upon their respective wives whether directly or indirectly, and their horrors.
As Othello trusts the words of his ancient Iago, he becomes vulnerable to manipulation and abuse. His ancient uses Othello’s trust to drive him mad with jealousy, resulting in Othello’s downfall. Othello, after losing all power he once had, recognizes that he is the one to blame for his downfall and commits suicide. Okonkwo, on the other hand, is driven by his masculinity into impulsive decisions. As his life begins to unravel at his hands, Okonkwo commits suicide without realizing that he is the cause of his downfall. Both Okonkwo and Othello display characteristics of Aristotle’s tragic hero, conveying the theme that insecurity will bring upon disaster, while having their own themes resulting from their differences. Okonkwo’s tragic flaw and downfall without any recognition conveys the theme that one’s insecurity will lead to their demise regardless of their intent. Othello’s characterization as a tragic hero conveys the theme one’s trust can be manipulated into jealousy that can destroy any
When Iago makes a point of including Othello’s race in a conversation with a confidant, it proves that he feels that Othello’s race is the reason for his actions. There is an obvious abhorrence for Othello based upon his race. Later in the play, Iago goes on to say “If she had been blessed, she would never have loved the Moor” (Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum “WRAC” ). This statement shows that Iago is jealous of Othello because he won the love of Desdemona and is cause for insecurities on his part. Iago must now question his marriage and whether or not Othello is cause for infidelity. These insecurities act as extra motivation for Iago’s actions.
When Shakespeare composed the tragedy Othello televisions were not. Along with no televisions, life in the late 1500s had many different qualities than it does today. This time period had no war on drugs and no high school shootings. Peer pressure was not an issue. The audiences of Othello in the 1500s did not face the circumstances that we, American high school students, face today. With these significant differences in daily life, come the attempts of movie creators to help prevent our modern day tragedies.
Another grudge is his suspicion of Othello that "twixt my sheets he has done my office" Iago has heard a rumour that Othello has slept with his wife, and now he wants revenge. But Iago does not feel betrayal by his wife, or feel that she has been wronged; it appears to be just another excuse to get back at Othello. Whereas Othello does have a sense of self-interest, his interest in other people's happiness is greater. When confronted with the idea that he has enchanted Desdemona, he replies that if it is true to "let your sentence fall even to my life".
The fear of interracial marriage in Venetian society is used by Iago in an attempt to alienate Othello. Othello himself acknowledges the fact that interracial marriage is frowned upon and that racism still applies to him despite his position. A common attitude in Venetian society is that black men and women are inhuman and animalistic in nature; Iago capitalizes on this idea in order to aid his plan of antagonizing Othello. Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, is a prime example of the attitude of Venetian society as a whole, in the sense that he “loved” Othello as long as he remained a servant of Venice and would rather Othello not intermingle amongst the Venetian society. Initially Brabantio “oft invited [Othello]” to his home and “queston’d [him] the story of [his] life”, showing an admiration and sincere interest for Othello’s
to be weak and naïve in the eyes of her father. We can tell this from
Racism is a glaring problem amongst the characters of the play. Othello is clearly affected by it and feels that he must prove himself equal to everyone else. Iago cleverly feeds Othello’s insecurity by constantly reminding him that he is racially distinct. He points out the obvious differences between Othello and Desdemona. He tells Othello that Desdemona will eventually regret that she hasn’t chosen someone of her own ethnicity and will desire someone,
