In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on a long journey in which he takes part in dangerous adventures. Odysseus is an example of Homer’s greek hero. He is a leader of his people and they depend and follow him. Odysseus is brave; he believes in himself and trusts that he is doing the right thing. Odysseus values his honor and is confident in himself.

Odysseus battles mythical creatures like the Cyclops and the Sirens, and faces the wrath of the gods. McGill and his companions encounter dangerous outlaws, navigate treacherous landscapes, and battle with their own inner demons. Another similarity between them would be their comedy and satire. While the Odyssey is a classic epic with a more serious tone, O Brother, Where Art Thou? employs humor and satire to lighten the mood.

They have a lot of the same physical features as well as their personalities. In The Odyssey, the Cyclops are very angry, and not very smart and aggressive, Big Dan is the same way. The Cyclops would pick up Odysseus' men and squish them to death, Big Dan takes the frog (Pete) squishes him, and throws him up against the tree. Odysseus let his personal problems affect the way he ruled his people, he led his people to be murderers. Odysseus wanted to be a good leader for his people, but his ego got in the way and caused him to make decisions that were not beneficial to people. At the beginning of the book, Odysseus is depicted as a fearless leader, but as the book goes on it is shown that Odysseus has weaknesses and is not the fearless leader he is thought to be. As Odysseus begins his voyage back from the island of Ogygia, Poseidon learns he is escaping and sends a ruthless storm throughout the sea and crashes Odysseus' boat.

Throughout the story, Odysseus is more or less constantly representing bravery. Odysseus creates a series of thrilling and colorful adventures. The spine-tingling elements throughout the stories and the vivid characters are effective. Not necessarily on their own terms, but because of their careful deployment at the correct moment in the narrative. Odysseus doing adventures such as traveling to the Underworld, and fighting off the Cyclops are exceptional examples to discuss.

In the Odyssey the main character Odysseus sets out on a journey that leads him to face many obstacles. He is forced to resist temptation , pridefulness, and being away from his family. Each one of this obstacles had a tremendous affect on him and how he is portrayed as a character. In the Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how one’s journey can affect them as a person.

Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.

To all the people who read his work there is something to be captured within every sentence, each one different in its own, unique way. Through tales of courage and defeat, friendship and love this book tells of all the values within the life of a single, solitary man, and his journey to attain what is true and dear to him. Like every great leader they each have their good qualities and they also have their flaws. Odysseus is a great leader, but from time to time his flaws shine above his other qualities. Such as his arrogance and his pride on his journey to get back to his family in Ithaca. A great example of one of Odysseus’ arrogance is “Cyclops, in the end it was no weak man’s companions you were to eat by violence and force in your hollow cave, and your evil deeds were to catch up with you, and be too strong for you, hard one, who dared to eat your own guests in your own house, so Zeus and the rest of the gods have punished you.’ (475-479).

Odysseus left Calypso’s Island and began his journey back home. His odyssey might be described as one’s own life struggles. There are ups and downs to every situation, and through reading The Odyssey, readers can connect parallels between Odysseus’ experiences and lessons learned in their own life.
