An odyssey is a journey or a journey with many obstacles and events. The Odyssey by Homer is a story about a character named Odysseus that takes a very long journey and tells that obstacles and events that occurred during his journey. During this semester, I have read many literary works and feel that there are several other characters that have been on journeys, literally and physically, themselves. In this essay, I will compare and contrast Odysseys to other characters by their struggles, strengths, and weaknesses.
Odysseus takes a literal journey for years and years, against his will, and faces many ups and downs along the way. His character is very proud, selfish, witty, and quick thinking. These characteristics either help him in his situations or they get him in even more trouble. He never knew when enough was enough and this upset many gods, especially Poseidon the god of the sea.

Both characters experience a very unique journey. They also both have faithful wives that wait for their return from the journey. However, Young Goodman Brown and Odysseus characteristics are not comparable at all.
Another journey that was taken in the literary works I read was one by the speaker or narrator in Because I could not stop for Death by Emily Dickinson. The speaker is taking the journey of death to her gravesite. Even though Odysseus did not experience death himself in the novel, he saw a lot of death and experienced many close calls. Just like the speaker was not prepared for death, Odysseus was not prepared in for many of his obstacles and had to come up with solutions very fast. Both characters go along with whatever is coming their way and accept their
In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on a long journey in which he takes part in dangerous adventures. Odysseus is an example of Homer’s greek hero. He is a leader of his people and they depend and follow him. Odysseus is brave; he believes in himself and trusts that he is doing the right thing. Odysseus values his honor and is confident in himself.
Odysseus battles mythical creatures like the Cyclops and the Sirens, and faces the wrath of the gods. McGill and his companions encounter dangerous outlaws, navigate treacherous landscapes, and battle with their own inner demons. Another similarity between them would be their comedy and satire. While the Odyssey is a classic epic with a more serious tone, O Brother, Where Art Thou? employs humor and satire to lighten the mood.
They have a lot of the same physical features as well as their personalities. In The Odyssey, the Cyclops are very angry, and not very smart and aggressive, Big Dan is the same way. The Cyclops would pick up Odysseus' men and squish them to death, Big Dan takes the frog (Pete) squishes him, and throws him up against the tree. Some of the other correlations of O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Odyssey also lies in the plot.
Odysseus’s rash decisions, due to his insecurities and ego, resulted in innocent women being murdered. Odysseus let his personal problems affect the way he ruled his people, he led his people to be murderers. Odysseus wanted to be a good leader for his people, but his ego got in the way and caused him to make decisions that were not beneficial to people. At the beginning of the book, Odysseus is depicted as a fearless leader, but as the book goes on it is shown that Odysseus has weaknesses and is not the fearless leader he is thought to be. As Odysseus begins his voyage back from the island of Ogygia, Poseidon learns he is escaping and sends a ruthless storm throughout the sea and crashes Odysseus' boat.
Throughout the story, Odysseus is more or less constantly representing bravery. Odysseus creates a series of thrilling and colorful adventures. The spine-tingling elements throughout the stories and the vivid characters are effective. Not necessarily on their own terms, but because of their careful deployment at the correct moment in the narrative. Odysseus doing adventures such as traveling to the Underworld, and fighting off the Cyclops are exceptional examples to discuss.
The Odyssey is a story telling about the long journey of Odysseus, and his adventures with his crew. It tells about his dangerous encounters with a Cyclops, sea monsters and Sirens, and eventually making it home safe to his wife, Penelope. Although modern literary scholars of The Odyssey have argued that Odysseus is a hero, closer examination shows that Odysseus is not a hero. He is selfish to his crew by making decisions to put them in danger, he is unfaithful to his wife on the journey and does unjust actions by killing the Cyclops without a good explanation, and going out of his way to a sea monster. These actions put his crew in jeopardy. While a good leader and a hero do selfless acts, Odysseus did selfish acts.
Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time”. In the Odyssey the main character Odysseus sets out on a journey that leads him to face many obstacles. He is forced to resist temptation , pridefulness, and being away from his family. Each one of this obstacles had a tremendous affect on him and how he is portrayed as a character. In the Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how one’s journey can affect them as a person.
Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.
The Odyssey is filled with emotion and adventure. Homer’s ability to show and give the reader a visual of each and every scene gives the story its unbelievable significance. To all the people who read his work there is something to be captured within every sentence, each one different in its own, unique way. Through tales of courage and defeat, friendship and love this book tells of all the values within the life of a single, solitary man, and his journey to attain what is true and dear to him. And this journey is known to all of us as The Odyssey. The Odyssey is a test of human devotion and trust through the gods, the mortals, and the obstacles through which they venture. No matter where they go or what they do, humans are tested for
Odysseus, king of Ithaca, was probably on of the greatest warriors in the history of Ancient Greece. It is said that the poet, Homer, wrote the story of the Odyssey. In this story, Odysseus and his crew are trying to make their voyage back home to Ithaca after they have fought with the Trojans. During the long journey, Odysseus will show some of his character traits which include his bravery, cleverness, and wisdom that will assist him with the situations he encounters on his journey home.
In “ The Odyssey ” by Homer, Odysseus goes on a journey to get home after twenty years the trojan war. The “ Hero’s Journey “ by Joseph Campbell represents the important journey the hero's take on their journey as a hole in the story. The fundamental parts of most stories consist of twelve parts to the hero's journey and some supplementary points. The three parts of the hero's journey supernatural aid, test and supreme ordeal , and reward and journey home. These are some of the most vital parts of the odyssey.
Like every great leader they each have their good qualities and they also have their flaws. Odysseus is a great leader, but from time to time his flaws shine above his other qualities. Such as his arrogance and his pride on his journey to get back to his family in Ithaca. A great example of one of Odysseus’ arrogance is “Cyclops, in the end it was no weak man’s companions you were to eat by violence and force in your hollow cave, and your evil deeds were to catch up with you, and be too strong for you, hard one, who dared to eat your own guests in your own house, so Zeus and the rest of the gods have punished you.’ (475-479).
Odysseus left Calypso’s Island and began his journey back home. His odyssey might be described as one’s own life struggles. There are ups and downs to every situation, and through reading The Odyssey, readers can connect parallels between Odysseus’ experiences and lessons learned in their own life. Human weaknesses can still prevail through even the strongest men you may think of; examples of this are shown in this epic. Even though there is a large gap in space between Odysseus’ travels and the present, human nature and weakness still share the same obstacles.
Odyssey a long series of wanderings filled with notable experience and hardships, or in other words the journey of life. Homer's The Odyssey is an epic poem telling of one man's journey. Odysseus, the chosen traveler of this Odyssey, represents the will and perseverance of all humanity. Odysseus' journey symbolizes the true toils of mankind's development through, agility, doubt, and faith.
Again, Odysseus' darker and 'immoral' acts could be viewed could viewed as metaphors for and/or accurate reflections of the imperfection of the human race. Characteristics that show that heroes too are flawed. A hero who has some shortcomings is a more believable character, they may be godly in the sense that they do what no one else can, but that they are still only human. Drawing on this, Odysseus can be considered a hero for modern times. He possesses admiral skills, such as commitment and knowledge, which are still considered heroic today. He uses these traits to protect himself and his crew as they make the long journey home. Although Odysseus is renowned for his expertise in fighting, he is
