The issue is that two employees: one that is a male and the other is a female, has had a cross-cultural miscommunication between them via email. Onuka feels that he is discriminating against him because he is African-American, while Raquel feels that she is discriminating against her due to her being a woman. The type of employee problem that is displayed here is a lack of communication and an emotionally charged issue. There is a lack of communication that is creating a cross-culturally issue or problem as well as a gender issue or problem. Both parties are emotionally charged over the gender and cross-culturally issue or problem.
The problem in this case is that KCDE-TV employees have the strong feeling of inequity.
252). The major issues that are faced with differing cultures within the workplace are communication issues. Speed and efficiency is lost when total understanding of the firm’s objectives is not communicated appropriately. Different cultures communicate in different ways and it is vitally important for a leader to clearly communicate to all involved within a firm.
According to behavioral theories of communication and decision-making the rational solution to a problem is not always the best answer. Therefore, when diversity creates controversy, which inhibits the development of an organization, the organization is forced to adopt other useful tactics that would result in positive outcomes. This document will focus on several aspects of cross-cultural conflicts; A)
I provided an assessment , that the issue at hand appeared to be more of a cultural communication issue above anything else. I noted that the management team at this facility were males of Indian decent. Next, I citied customary tones, mannerisms, and drive commonly said to be used by, or associate with, some people of Indian decent may have been misinterpreted or misconstrued by some non-Indian decent employees at this facility, as racist or intimidating. Conversely, management may not have been aware of how their employees perceived or interpreted their communication style and
My target group for this assignment is African – American men. I encounter members of this group on daily basis, and would like to learn more about this particular group’s workplace experience as it relates to diversity; more precisely if they are experiencing different treatment due to their ethnicity and gender. Even though I encounter members of this group on daily basis, I do not work with members of this group and have not in my previous jobs. I have very little understanding of their views and experiences pertaining to work environment. This group differs from me in two dimensions: gender and ethnicity. This is a distinct group for this essay since I am Caucasian and female. I grew up in Albania and moved to the United States when
In a perfect world, people would be equal in rights, opportunities, and responsibilities, despite their race or gender. In the world we live in, however, we always face all kinds of neglect based on different attributes. All over the United States, certain people treat others with prejudice because of particular features they possess. Unfortunately, prejudice and discrimination occur even in places which, by definition, should be free of all personal prejudices – specifically, in offices and other business surroundings. This tragedy is called workplace discrimination; not every unfair behavior at work, however, can be assessed as discrimination. Discrimination in the workplace happens when an employee experiences unfair treatment due to their race, gender, age, religion, marital status, national origin, disability or veteran status, or other characteristics. Discrimination is one of the largest issues people face in the workplace and it must be dealt with. The U.S. have laws and regulations on discrimination but it still often occurs. Workplace discrimination appears in hiring, training, promotion, firing, and other institutional or interpersonal treatment. Discrimination sometimes causes an employee to leave or quit the workplace, resign from a position, or in more severe cases, to commit suicide or act violently against the discriminators. Discrimination is one of the largest issues many people face in the workplace.
In this scenario, Maria, who is of Latino ancestry made a complaint about being passed over for a promotion because she is a Latina; she was born in America, and is a second generation. Maria holds a graduate degree, and has been with this company for 10 years, but has been in her position for seven years. The person who got the promotion was Alex, who is an Anglo, and has a graduate degree. However, he has less time in the company or in this position, and had better evaluations than Maria. Maria is the only Latina, and the only person of color; she believes that the reason her evaluations were lower, were because of bias towards white males, and because of the fear of clients not being able to understand her accent.
Cultural diversity in the workplace: Employees are similar or different based on race, gender, age, personality, style, education, background etc.
In Murasaki Shikibu Nikki, the author says: “To be pleasant, gently, calm and self-possessed: this is the basis of good taste and charm in a woman” (Shirane, 450). Women were supposed to act a certain way, and this diary specifies the boundaries clearly. Most of this is because she herself was the object of criticism from those around her, despite the popularity of her tales. Another tip from her is “No matter how amorous or passionate you may be, as long as you are straightforward and refrain from causing others embarrassment, no one will mind” (450). If you do not follow society’s guidelines, you will be judged in every movement you make, and “people will find fault with whatever [you] say or do; whether it be how [you] enter a room, how [you] sit down, how [you] stand up or how [you] take [your] leave” (451). She goes on about how she is regarded by others because of how much she knows, and the rumors that spread about her. People generally think she is worth making fun of and talking about because she knows Chinese and because she referenced the Chronicles of Japan, a classic text about Japan, in The Tale of Genji (451).
Gender, ethnicity, and race inequalities and the issues surrounding them in the workplace have been on the forefront of society’s mind for decades. The problem of inequality in the workplace has become one of the most important and vital issues in our society today. In order to understand fully the reasons for these inequalities, one must try to understand the factors that cause gender, ethnicity, and racial issues within the workplace, yet in this case, we will tend to focus mostly towards gender inequality in the workplace. One typically thinks locally
6. Describe the way in which cultural differences can act to impede communication between business people of different nationality.
The importance of understanding cultural, ethnic and gender differences by managers and professionals in a business setting is essential to make the work environment comfortable. In every culture there are basic standards of thinking, and acting and these cultural differences strongly influence workplace values and communication. What may be considered acceptable and natural in the workplace for one person may be unacceptable for another person. People from diverse cultures bring new ways of thinking, creativity and language skills needed to survive in today’s work force. In many
another culture can be full of surprises. Just ask any foreign woman who has given birth in Japan.
There are two major cultural divisions, Hispanic and Caucasian, to further complicate the work environment the ratio of Male to female workers is 20 to 1. No effort from either group of being sensitive to the others existence is apparent. (DuBrin, 2004, p. 67). Management’s main concern is for “ethnic diversity” to the point of not having issues with the equal employment opportunity act.
* Cultural barriers exist when we join a group and wish to remain in it, sooner or later we need to adopt the behavior patterns of the group. These are the behaviors that the groups accept as signs of belonging. As stated in the reading once an employee had five breakdown reports, he or she was taken off the machine and given a lower paying job. Some of the managers don’t believe that this is a productive practice but goes along with it because has become the culture of the company with the previous vice president.
