The theme is the main message the author is trying to say through any literary piece, it can be anything the author desires it to be. Schindler’s List provides many examples of the theme: the best and the worst parts of human nature. Oskar Schindler showcased the best of humanity. He had created a factory to help save many prisoners, even though he knew it was against Hitler’s command. Also, the soldiers demonstrated the worst of humanity. They were killing thousands of innocent people just because one man told them to. Similarly, the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the memoir, Night, demonstrates this theme. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the society of Maycomb shows the best parts and the worst parts of human nature. Throughout the memoir, …show more content…
As Elie Wiesel and his father arrived at Birkenau, they were sent to the crematorium. Elie Wiesel had thought, “How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and the world kept silent,” (Wiesel 32). He did not understand how not one person did something when innocent people were being burned because of who they are. In the same fashion, the lynch mob wanted to kill Tom Robinson because of his skin colour. Also, the German workers at many of the train stops would throw pieces of bread into the cattle cars to watch the Jews fight over them. Elie Wiesel had explained, “Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs. The worker watched the spectacle with great interest,” (100). He explained that they were starving so much that they were willing to harm each other and the Germans found this amusing. Similarly, the children in To Kill a Mockingbird found the life of Boo Radley interesting and would not leave him alone. Another illustration was when the Jewish sons left their fathers without showing any emotion. Elie Wiesel had described, “Sons abandoned the remains of their fathers without a tear,” (92). Even though they lost a loved one, many Jews did not cry over them, they had lost all emotions or were too tired to care. In a like manner, the jury in To Kill a Mockingbird did not care that they were wrongly convicting an innocent man. In the end, the worst of humanity was present …show more content…
Both pieces demonstrate this theme through the characters and events that took place throughout them. Within the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, some of the characters and events are the lynch mob, the jury, Jeremy (Jem) Atticus Finch, Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, and Charles Baker Harris (Dill), Arthur (Boo) Radley, Atticus Finch, and Calpurnia. In addition, some characters and events throughout the memoir, Night, are the burning of innocent people, the German workers, the sons of the Jewish men, Elie Wiesel and his father, the inmate, and the SS officers. It is possible that the authors were trying to make it clear that the world is not full of evil and darkness. They showed that even though there is evil in the world, there is always light and goodness to overpower the
When they were removing the jews from their second concentration camp the packed them by a hundred in train carts while everyone was starving. This made the the prisoners minds open to do anything for food. When a bystander saw the cart with prisoners inside inside it, he threw a piece of bread into Wiesel’s cart allowing him see a scary sight, “Men were hurling themselves against each other, trampling, tearing at and mauling each other” (Wiesel 101). This shows that their hunger was to the point that they are willing to hurt each other without a single thought about their actions. Nobody cared if the person next to themselves was getting killed as long as they had a better chance of food. Also, when everyone was fighting Wiesel saw a old man crawling. He then figured out that the man was hiding a piece of bread next to chest in his hand. Soon after Wiesel saw something you would only animals would do “ Meir, my little Meir. don't you recognize me… you're killing your father… i have bread… for you too… for you too… The old man old man mumbled something, groaned, and died” (Wiesel 101). The son lost all emotions for try to survive that he killed his own father for scraps of bread. He killed him with even thinking about it and showed no remorse afterwards. For this reason, the prisoners showed their loss of compassion by completing these nightmarish
Theme. A lesson in a novel or story that is not directly stated in the book. Between the excerpts Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and The Street by Ann Petry is a common theme. The theme that desperate times call for desperate measures.
“All men are created equal” (Lee 274) cited by Thomas Jefferson, in the infamous 1776 Declaration of Independence. Throughout this paper, I will present facts that counter this claim excluding African Americans and Jews during the 1930’s and 40’s. This assignment requires me to compare and contrast, Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Elie Wiesel “Night” by selecting three universal themes. My themes are racism, inequality in the judicial system and educational barriers has interfered with everyone being afforded “due process” in their pursuit to attain life, liberty, and prosperity (the basic liberties) protected by the 14th Amendment.
When writing about the theme, the writer should keep in mind that he/she will write an analysis of a theme that appears in either a text or movie that argues a specific point. The writer's aim in this type of essay is to pick a theme from a text or movie and write about what that theme does for the story or what that theme makes the reader realize about that story and/or life itself. The best way to come up with such an
The theme is the subject of the essay and it helps the reader to get the full understanding about the message or a big idea. “School of Hate” by Sabrina Rubin Erdely and “18 Tigers, 17 Lions, 8 Bears, 3 Cougars, 2 Wolves, 1 Baboon, 1 Macaque, and 1 Man Dead in Ohio” by Chris Heath have one similar theme and it is isolation because they both experienced as the outcasts and it was hard for them to getting along with the society. Erdely developed the theme by showing the experiences of a girl in the middle school. The author made the
To kill a mockingbird written by Harper Lee. Themes are the subject of a talk, a piece of writing or a person's thoughts. There are many themes present in this great American classic such as courage, racism, prejudice, morality and of course coming of age. Lee communicates these themes with characters, events that unfold and the scenarios that Jem and Scout have to face.
A theme, by literary definition, is a central topic of a text. This means that they are a always a part of every story. Mainly, themes symbolize the, sometimes hidden, meanings of texts. In one particular story of Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” one theme is evident throughout this short story, and it centers around the neglect of morals and ethical beliefs. Throughout the text, this idea of moral neglect is apparent, and the story describes how derelict the ethics of the people of Omelas have become.
Theme can be defined as “a central insight.” According to the authors of The Art of Watching Films, a theme in a literary work or film should be universal and should be one that challenges people (Boggs & Petric, 2008). The Silence of the Lambs shows that peoples’ search for peace is universal. We see characters from all walks of life searching for peace. There is Clarice Starling, an FBI agent in training, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant
A theme is the meaning behind a story, occasionally defined as the moral of the story. Themes can differ from one end of the world to the other, as it does in many books. The Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac is a futuristic version of the world which has been divided into two parts. The rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, otherwise known as Keyland and Droughtland. Keyland is where all the rich people with extravagant lands and lives live. Droughtland is a disease-ridden land where all poor people are being forced to live. Society treats Droughtland poorly and they decide to take action. Thus starting the revolution. Carrie Mac portrays many themes in different ways throughout the book. However the major theme the book revolves around is that; No matter how rich or poor a person is, or what gender, race, or sexuality they are, in the end, they are all the same and deserve to be treated equally. In addition, the book shows that when everyone is treated equally there is so much more that everyone can accomplish. The theme is being portrayed through the narrative point of view, setting and atmosphere, and character development.
On the United States Holocaust Museum, I went to the exhibit titled, “Some Were Neighbors”. In this exhibit, it explained the different kinds of people the Jews were around during the holocaust, how those people acted towards the Jews. It mainly talked about how they had helped or harmed the Jews simply because of fear, peer pressure, or just because they could. From this info, a lot of connections could be stated, each between both the book Night and the movie Schindler’s List.
themes is the dissatisfaction that the characters of the novel have. None of them are happy with
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you and your family were forced to move out of your home and leave everything behind. Well this is what happened to the Jews in the holocaust. One thing that the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the movie Schindler's List directed by Steven Spielberg is they both had some form of violence whether visual or descriptive. One major difference they had was how the main characters survived. Another key difference from both the movie and the book is the main character's motivation.
Atticus said, “They’ve done it befor and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it-seems that only children weep”(Lee 285). To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee. It is about two siblings , Jem and Scout, who live in a small town called Maycomb. Their father Atticus, is a well known lawyer, who is defending an African American that was accused of raping a white women. Throughout the novel, Jem and Scout are introduced to discrimination and learn that it’s an everlasting problem. Prejudice and discrimination are important themes in To Kill a Mockingbird because of racism, sexism, and ageism.
There have been many novels over the years that have sparked conversations about human rights. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Night by Elie Wiesel are two novels that have done just that. Night depicts a firsthand account of the horrors the Jewish people faced during the Holocaust. A similar story is told in To Kill a Mockingbird with the plights of African Americans in the south. Although these novels take place over during different decades and to completely different groups of people, they share similar themes of prejudice, hope, and a loss of innocence.
Theme gives the reader a general idea about what the piece of literature is about. The character’s action and thoughts takes part in creating the theme. Animal farm was a book about animals taking control of the farm from their tyrannic farmer. The animals attempts to make the farm a democracy, but Napoleon, the pig leader, takes over and eventually becomes the new tyrant. The Pearl was about a family, Kino, Juana, Coyotito, who catches a huge pearl. They go through a journey to get away from any harm such as the trackers. In the book Animal Farm and the book The Pearl, the two characters, Napoleon and the Doctor, created a theme that greed can change their perspective.
