Comparing Poems 'Brave Man And This Living Hand'

Interlaced throughout these poems, one theme is shared, and that theme is how longing slowly turns into death over time. As poets often ask readers to examine more closely the relationship between seemingly opposite themes. Specifically, poems by Agran, Dunbar, Keats, and Stevens explore the tension between desire and death. “Black Umbrellas” is about a ‘new start’ in life while “Why Fades a Dream” is about having a dream and putting it to action. “This Living Hand” is about enjoying the time you are alive and not taking life for granted ,however; “The Brave Man” is about a man that is personified as a sun and going through fears in his life. “Why fades a dream?-- Of consciousness the shade wrought out by lack of light and made upon life’s stream. Why fades a dream?” This question asks and answers ‘Why does a dream fade?’ a dream fades as Dunbar states when the moon is setting and the sun is rising. That once the sun rises awareness of reality takes over your body so you can rise to put your dreams into action so they become a reality. “And like waxing star-beam glow upon life’s stream -- so fades a dream.” States that once your ambitions have been accomplished your dreams about growing to be an extraordinary human are completed, so all you have to look forward to is death. In a manner death can be great or it can be dreadful depending on who is asked.
