Rhetoric refers to the study of the ways speakers and writers utilizes words in influencing the audience. Therefore, a rhetorical analysis refers to the essay where a non-fiction work is broken down into parts and it is used in the creation of a specific effect. A rhetorical analysis must assess the goals of the rhetorician, the tools used and the effectiveness of those tools. In writing a rhetorical analysis, one does not argue on the tools used but instead discusses the ways the rhetorician makes an argument and whether he or she uses a successful approach. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a fiction novel for children which was written by C.S. Lewis and was published by Geoffrey Bles in 1950. It is regarded as one of the renowned and first published novels of The Chronicles of Narnia and it is held in libraries. Most parts of the novel are set in Narnia, which is believed to be a land with talking animals and mythical creatures ruling into the deep winter. This paper seeks to compare the novel and movie adaptation of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

An example is when in the three movies and the book series, Aslan is portrayed as a noble and powerful creation of Narnia. In the movies, Aslan is portrayed as king, protective, loving and even noble which is part of his character. In the book series, he is portrayed as a father figure to every character, talking to animals, playful and even having a sense of humor. For instance in the book, the Prince of Caspian, Aslan is shown as humorous when he attempts to make the Trufflehunter have belief in him through the picking of the dwarf with his mouth and giving a big shake. In the Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe, Aslan is portrayed as playful. This is seen immediately he comes back from the dead and begins playing with Lucy and Susan for them to try catching
The meditation began with violin music as students and teachers entered the church. The music continued for three or four minutes after everyone had found their seats. When the music concluded, the speaker walked to the lectern and began speaking. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the author’s rhetorical purpose is to persuade readers to be open to new experiences and to experiment with new things in different surroundings. A rhetorical pattern that was seen a lot though the story was alliteration. It is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent. An example would be “So monstrous a mount, so mighty a man in the saddle.” This ties into the rhetorical purpose of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” by giving you the ability to make a picture in your head. On page 147 of Slouching Towards Bethlehem, there is a passage that I think describes a solution to the problem of sympathy versus empathy. The passage basically states that if we see the value in ourselves, we will be able to discriminate, to love, and to remain indifferent toward others. However, if we do not come to this realization, we will hate those who cannot give to us and will only help others to improve our own image. I agree with the idea that we must come to some realization of who we are in order to reach out and help others for the sake of the good in it. I agree with this because if we do not understand who we are or how we fit into the world, then we will be insecure. This will cause us to seek ways to sure ourselves up and
C.S. Lewis wrote The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe because he wanted to write a children’s book “as a gift for his godchild” (Palmer). It began for him with a series of pictures that came into his mind. “Lewis stated, ‘Everything began with images; a faun carrying an umbrella, a queen on a sledge, a magnificent lion” (Kennedy). A fairy tale was forming in his mind and “‘At first there wasn't anything Christian about them; that element pushed itself in of its own accord’” (Kennedy), As the story progresses and Lewis’s characters and storyline begin to develop a seemingly clear relationship formed between The Bible and this novel. “Given Lewis’s strong Christian faith, that is not surprising. In fact, once the story was established, Lewis said he ‘...saw how stories of this kind could steal past a certain inhibition which had paralysed much of my own religion in childhood’” (Kennedy.) Even though C.S. Lewis started off writing a children's novel, many people perceive it to be a novel written in parallel to the Bible. Lewis has used Biblical references and a classic storyline to prove that good will alway triumph over evil. Nathaniel Hawthorne, in his bold novel, The Scarlet Letter tackles a variety of themes that include: sin, guilt, redemption, postfeminism, and organized religion's abuse of power. Hawthorne spoke in a somber and grim tone, designed to arouse a sense of suspense for his readers. The audience in which he was addressing would have been conservative Christians and women suffragettes, all of whom reflected the ideologies during this time period. By instilling clever diction, Hawthorne exposes hypocrisy in Puritanism and objects against the religion's superfluous punishments; which force individuals to endure unnecessary and extreme suffering.
In Spring Ford Community Theater’s production of A Christmas Carol, the rhetoric utilized by the director and actors in the creation of this play helps strengthen the argument that the tale is still relevant and connects to the modern era, which is proposed in Stephanie Allen’s Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” Told Uncomfortable Truths About Victorian Society, But Does it Have Anything to Teach Us Today?. Through the use of emotional appeals and the chronological progression of the play, this production makes the tale believable and reconnects it to common themes found in modern literature. The purpose of this production is to reinforce how these themes affect life and to display a positive outlook to the holiday season, which is done by the connection of this production with the viewer.
Additionally, King builds his credibility with the utilization of ethos in his text in order to convince them of his argument. By appealing to the readers’ ethics, they can see how trustworthy King’s words are and then can let themselves be persuaded by his matter-of fact tone and professionalism in writing. King is a realist, which means that he almost always represents things as they really are, which profoundly helps establish his honest persona. Most of Stephen King’s writing represents more than one tenet, as his stories that he tells about his childhood and road to recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism can be seen as not only pathos, but and etho as well, as these stories help the readers to understand what kind of person he is, and how he accomplished all of his success despite a couple of major roadblocks. This is why it can be seen that King uses pathos most heavily in his writing, by telling vivid stories, etc. in order to touch upon human emotion towards human experiences/traits, while also creating a strong voice in his writing as well. The overlapping of these appeals help support the ethics and sensibility of King’s work. There are scores of times where it can be clearly identified where ethos have been used in his writing. For example, King says “I’m a slow reader, but i usually get through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don't read in order to study the craft; i read because i like to read.- Similarly, I don't read to study the art of fiction, but simply because I like stories-Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (King, pg 145) This helps to support the idea that writing is learned through reading, and also is learned through the mistakes of other writers. There is no better way to learn than to look at a piece of writing that has some minor or even major flaws and to analyze the piece to see what the issue is, and learn from their mistake to better your own writing in the future. Another one of King’s main arguments is that no writer is perfect. There are always things that you can do to make your writing even better, no matter how small the adjustment may be. Almost everyone in the world is familiar with the infamous Disney movie The Lion King, but very few have gone into detail and analyzed the rhetoric within the film. Each scene is filled with a sense of pathos that tugs on the emotions of the audience and inevitably pushes them to one side over the other. It is interesting to see how the voices, color, and actions of each character have such an effect on their personalities which then has an effect on the audience and leaves them judging the morals of the characters. For people who grew up watching the original Disney movies, this is a great film to watch in depth and really figure out the meaning behind each scene.
Sometimes whats ideal in a situation is not what the truth of the situation and can cause your ideals to be lost. In William Golding’s novel, “Lord of the Flies”, he demonstrates a shift in some of the characters from the thought of idealism to the reality and truth of the world. Ralph is a good example of this shift, he starts out thinking the island will be a fun place and they’ll have fun waiting to be rescued, but soon he realizes that there is going to be more hardship and struggles to keep up the moral and hope of rescue. In the book Ralph wanted to keep everyone safe and get them off the island, but Jack wants to be a leader and messes up his plans, making it so that Ralph is alone in his plan to get rescued.
Aslan is a representation of adulthood and the idea of having responsibilities and reaching full maturity. In the story written by C.S Lewis, we learn each member of the Pevensie siblings have different charcter aspects that determine their view on Aslan (adulthood). Peter the eldest of the Pevensie siblings is the most courageous and brave of them. This shows the Peter is very mature and can face difficult obstacles that come in his way. His reaction was bravery and adventure, showing that he looks forward with confidence in his future and may be the most ready. Susan Pevensie, the second oldest, reacted with delight. Susan looks forward to her future also; delights, even, in the idea of being a woman and maturing completely. Edmund
Four siblings: Lucy, Peter, Susan and Edmund Pevensie are all sent to a faraway house to be safe from the conflicts of World War II. They each step through a wardrobe they discovered and out into the new world of Narnia—a land tyrannized and ruled by the vicious White Witch. Right before almost all hope is lost, the Great Lion— Aslan—returns, bringing with him a new found sense of hope and change. But with great victory, comes great sacrifice.
In C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Lewis emphasizes the three points of philosophy, themes, and symbolism throughout his writing. Lewis was a strong Christian man, and wanted to make children see and understand all the stories of the Bible. Therefore, he put Christian elements through his books, but with fantasy characters as well. Especially in this story, Lewis conveys the differences between good and evil. Aslan is represented as Christ just as the White Witch represents the sense of evil. Lewis wrote several books in this Narnia series, but The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe became the most famous and recognized of his novels.
The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, expands upon various persuasive elements and techniques which convince characters into making radical choices. This is apparent in Act 2, Scene 1, where Antonio (the Duke of Milan) convinces his friend Sebastian into killing his own brother Alonso (the King of Naples) and the king’s councillor Gonzalo. Antonio’s success in persuading Sebastian can be attributed to his rhetoric, logical thinking, and promises of power.
After King Lear’s two oldest daughters, Goneril and Regan express their love for their father in a flattering speech they were granted their share of the kingdom, and Cordelia his youngest daughter and favorite daughter refused to play along, Lear felts she was disrespectful and she was banished from his sight. Cordelia bids farewell to her sisters, and tells them that she knows they don’t love him, “I know you what you are, and like a sister am most loath to call your faults as they are named.” (1.2.273-275). “Time shall unfold what plighted cunning hides; who covers faults, at last shame them derides. Well may you prosper!” (1.2.284-286). Once Cordelia left, Goneril and Regan revealed to the audience that they had no love for their father.
