In the original fairy tales of “Snow White” and “Sleeping Beauty”, both written by Jacob L. Grimm and Wilhelm C. Grimm various techniques on the role of mothering ranging from neglect and favouritism to jealously and envy are explored. According to the oxford dictionary mother is defined as “A woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth”, however being a step-mother is not as easily defined as such the role is one that carries complexity as well as challenges. Throughout the plot of both tales, the role of mother or lack thereof has a significant impact on the characters, whether it may be a positive one or a negative manner. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Cinderella” are similar in terms of mother character …show more content…
In Cinderella, the protagonist is always cleaning and taking orders from her stepmother, while the two daughters bathe in luxury and are sheltered by her mom, their relationship exemplifies the quintessential nurturing mother. Upon receiving news about a wedding party hosted by the prince, the step-mother does everything in her power to prevent Cinderella from attending by either giving her unnecessary tasks or by telling her she is too poor to go. “Cut the toe off, for you when you are queen you will never have to go on foot.” (J.L Grimm and W.C Grimm 5) In an effort to secure the future of her daughters she resorts to drastic measures such as mutilating their feet to fit the shoe so that they would be chosen by the prince to wed and essentially become rich and financially protected. Cinderella threatened that security and due to this is targeted and mistreated by the stepmother. Her daughter’s tried to fit their feet in the shoe by severing parts of their foot and as a result; they were physically maimed. Cinderella was able to fit the shoe with no challenge whatsoever and in doing so gained and maintained the interest of the prince. “Stepmothers are the equivalent …show more content…
After Snow White discovers the residence of the seven dwarfs she rests until the dwarfs return home. “If you will keep our house for us, and cook, and wash, and make the beds, and sew and knit, and keep everything tidy and clean, you may stay with us and you shall lack nothing” (J.L Grimm and W.C Grimm 3) this is a prime representation of how the dwarf are letting Snow White reside in their home, even after she invaded and left the house a disaster. This displays the role of mothering as the dwarfs are protecting her from the psychotic queen and providing food and shelter. Later on the queen finds out where she is hiding and tries to poison her, the dwarfs warn her that her stepmother is trying to kill her. “Dwarfs obligingly provide a halfway or transitional home, a place for Snow White to stop on the journey from her father's house” (Bilharzia 526) and in doing so save her life and secured her
The stepmother felt “It’ no use… we would be so embarrassed” (Grimm 7). Even though she was hard on Cinderella she also put pressure on her daughters as well. She even forced her daughters to do whatever it took to fit the golden shoe that the prince presented. The mother even handed the older child a knife and said, “Cut the toe off. Once your queen you wont need to go on foot anymore” (Grimm 9).
The fairy tale Snow White is a story about two women. One, the evil stepmother, schemes
The similarity is the two stepsisters are rude and have horrible attitudes toward Cinderella. In the Grimm Brothers, they mention the two stepsisters are beautiful with darkness of heart; compared with the Disney film they both are ugly. Most important, both stepsisters are willing to do anything to marry with the prince. “No one shall be my wife except for the one whose foot fits this golden shoe.” this quote shows the differences between both the Disney film and the Grimm Brother had played different roll and action. With the stepmother advice the stepsisters were followed to claim something does not belong to them. In the Disney film, show that the golden shoe did not fit in their foot. In contrast to the Grimm Bothers show the older stepsister foot was too big for the shoe, and she decided to cut off her toe. The young stepsister her heel was too long than the shoe, and she also decided to cut off her
The prince has every girl in the kingdom try on the slipper. Once the prince arrived at Cinderella’s house her two stepsisters immediately did whatever they needed to do to get their feet to fit in the slipper. The first one cut off her toe, and the second cut off her heel. When Cinderella came out, because it was her slipper, her foot slipped right in. On the day of the wedding the two stepsisters came and tried to benefit from Cinderella’s good fortune, but pigeons came and pecked their eyes out, punishing them to be blind for the rest of their lives for the malicious way they treated Cinderella. We assume that Cinderella and the prince marry, and of course, lived happily ever after.
In her article, “Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior,” Elisabeth Panttaja illustrates the important role of parents in a childhood. She talks about the importance the mother plays in all versions of Cinderella as well as evidence showing what lack of parenthood does to children. Panttaja claims by way of the Grimms Brothers version of Cinderella and how each mother wants to guarantee a bright and happy future for their daughters by marrying them off to the prince. The similarities between the wanting of Cinderella and the stepsisters married- and doing anything to get it- contradicts the idea that Cinderella and her mother were morally superior, or different at all, from the stepmother and sisters.
Few people can grow up within today's society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found written between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow White discusses the themes of envy and beauty, and shows how humans' obsessions can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow White and her step-mother the Queen, it is evident that the combination of these two themes results in a power struggle in which beauty
In the Grimm version, there is also extra punishment for the stepmother as well. The stepmother now has to tend to her daughters and provide special care for them now because they cannot walk. She talked her daughters into cutting parts of their feet off because “ When you are queen you will no longer have to go on foot” (Grimm.) Therefore, they cannot walk anymore and
“To lie forever in unlovely sleep(Bennett)” This quote comes from our first poem, “The True Story Of Snow White”. The poems are similar, but they are also contrasting in several ways. Some may start out with the grueling fact of both poems include death, but I will start out with the ‘happy endings’ to both poems.
After the ball Disney ends their story with the prince searching for the maiden who fits the shoe. Cinderella is locked away so she wouldn’t be able to try it on the glass slipper and then is rescued by her furry friends. She then shows that the shoe is indeed hers and she and the prince live happily ever after. In Grimm’s version, although a lot more graphic, we are told that in a desperate attempt to fit the coveted shoe, the step-sisters cut off pieces of their feet and trick the prince until two crows relay him a message exposing their deficit. The crows then pluck out the eyes of the step-sisters and they, along with their black-hearted mother, are left as beggars. Disney’s version doesn’t go into detail about the consequences of the Cinderella’s step relatives.
From reading Snow White, I noticed a lot of traits from the other Fairy Tales I've read. In Snow White, the queen wished for a daughter who white as snow and red as blood and that’s what the mother said in The Juniper Tree, when she was trying to wish for a child. Most of the Fairy Tales are about evil step mothers, absentee father and witches house in the woods, or some type of civilization in the wilderness. In this story, what I found hysterical on how jealous the stepmother was over Snow White and her beauty. She was overcome with jealousy and rage that she even considering killing her stepdaughter, just so her mirror can say that she’s beautiful. So when the mirror told her that Snow White was still alive and she was living with seven
Disney’s Cinderella and Grimm’s Cinderella are alike in many ways. One of the things that the
Written in the stories of Snow White, Snow runs away from her stepmother to avoid being killed from her stepmother's hatred of snow's beauty. The brother grimm version focuses mostly on Snow White's survival from her stepmother's tricks to kill her. The brothers grimm makes it seem that the only problem that snow white is facing is her stepmother. This is seen when the version is translated to “So she kept house for them. Every morning they went into the mountains looking for ore and gold, and in the evening when they came back home their meal had to be ready.” This shows how her life isn’t in danger when she isn’t in a situation brought by the queen. ( D. L. Ashliman) Similarly, Snow White and Huntsman also includes Snow white eluding her capture by the queen but brings Snow White in different situations presented to her that arises many other conflicts
In my short analysis of “Cindarella”, understanding the basic concepts of the story was not as easy as I had once predicted. The author Elisabeth Panttaja explains in her essay different views and ideas in the sense that Cinderella is successful because of the magical powers created by her dead mother. The author tells that “It is not suprising . . . that modern criticism of (Cinderella) . . . has been so strangely indifferent to the roles that Cinderella’s mother plays in the story.” This to my knowledge is giving me a different view on how people thought Cinderella acted to the situations that occurred.
Snow White is a fairytale that never gets old. Countless young children know the tale by heart: A young, beautiful girl tries to live a happy life while her mother tries to kill her due to Snow White being prettier than her. Snow White, though, has a much more profound, unexploited history. There are many versions of this story that not a lot of people read. Two texts that were particularly fascinating were Gold Tree and Silver Tree as well as Nourie Hadig. In Gold Tree and Silver Tree, Silver Tree becomes jealous with Gold Tree’s beauty and tries to kill her newlywed daughter, but Gold Tree made a new friend, and she helped take care of Silver Tree. In Nourie Hadig, Nourie is left in the forest by her father because her mother wants to kill her. There, she takes care of a prince all the while her mother is trying to find her. Both these stories have amazing similarities and striking differences, but the similarities significantly outweigh the differences. The stories are astonishingly similar many ways, but their characters are the most standout thing about these stories. While these figures have their differences, the similarities are much more eye-catching. These characters are similar because their personalities follow a similar rhythm throughout the stories and their actions also stay the same.
In “Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior,” Elisabeth Panttaja makes a claim that the Grimms’ version of “Cinderella” provides reasons that Cinderella may not have been so fortunate due to her being “good and pious.” One main point that she discusses within the article is the mother/daughter relationship Cinderella shares with her deceased mother, in comparison to the mother/daughter relationship shared between the stepmother and stepsisters. Panttaja argues that the mothers in each relationship are both motivated by the same thing, “to ensure a future of power and prestige for their daughter” (Panttaja). Panttaja continues to identify how both mothers’ motives are similar, but her argument falters when she attempts to bring Cinderella’s
