World War II began in 1939 and did not end until 1945. Two of the last battles of the war were the Battle of Saipan and D-Day. The Battle of Saipan was fought between the Japanese and the United States and was fought on the Japanese island of Saipan. D-Day was a battle on the European front and was fought between the United States and Germany. Saipan and D-Day influenced the end of WWII because they both captured significant pieces land, the United States had more power and attack force than Germany and Japan, and the Japanese and Germans did not have a significant enough navy fleet compared to the U.S. Both of the attacks that occurred on the Pacific and European theater were on areas of land that were very important to the Japanese and Germans. Saipan was one of Japan’s main islands that they specifically did not want the U.S. to capture because they knew that if the United States did, then it would lead to them being able to attack Japan. The U.S. had also planned on turning the island of Saipan into a naval base. The U.S. took out most of theirs in earlier battles, so in the final battles the United States had significantly more than them. Also, whenever the U.S. lost weapons and machinery, such as aircraft carriers, they could be easily replaced due to the fact they had such a large industrial base. Japan and Germany had no way to resupply themselves, so they couldn’t replace any of their war machines. In Saipan, once the Japanese began running out of machinery, they took defense on a mountain and hid in caves. This is when the U.S. brought in flamethrowers, which drove the Japanese out of the caves or killed them.
