Persistence is one chapter from the book which called Character Strengths and Virtues. In this chapter, the author talks about persistence, perseverance, and Industriousness, and how theses characteristics affect individuals' lives. As the chapter begins, the writer defined the persistence as continual of a goal-directed action despite difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. The writer describes the persistence characteristic as a unique human strength compared with animals; most animals do not continue at any task longer than 20 minutes before moving on to the next task. In addition, this chapter includes some Theoretical Traditions, individuals who persevere frequently assume that their persistence will be rewarded with the consequences
But persistence is key if they want to improve, and it takes courage to do something to improve yourself. In this quote, Melinda is trying to better her situation and to overcome her trauma from the summer before: “I go to every single class for a week. It feels good to know what the teachers are talking about again.” (Anderson Pg 120). Improving yourself is challenging, and mustering up the courage to persist and keep trying could help other people to
Persistence is when you take risks and never give up and Jackie Robinson took his chances and didn’t give up. He was also very committed to baseball because he was very loyal to his team and that's exactly what commitment was. Jackie Robinson had to be very committed and persistent to do everything that he did. Jackie Robinson possessed the character trait persistence and commitment that had made him a successful civil rights advocate.
In the first section of fahrenheit 451 the two character that stuck out to me was Guy montag and Clarrisse McCellan. They are both outsiders in the novel. The both see the world differently and see the world differently. They are different because Clarrisse has always seen the world differently then other people and Guy just recently stated to see the world
We must obey my order as I give them. Get the oarshafts in your hands, and lay back hard on your benches; hit these breaking seas”(934-935). In the same way that Odysseus showed persistence, I showed it in my own life. For example, once when I was in seventh grade, I was down in a wrestling match 2-8, down by 6, but I didn’t give up. In the last few seconds, I used every muscle in my body, and pinned the guy I was wrestling.
To Kill A Mockingbird , is a fictional novel, written by Harper Lee, that make connections to historical events including her life in the 1930’s and the Civil Rights Movement in the 50’s and 60’s.
When Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451, he created several characters that seem to foil each other. These characters have different ideas on the importance of things such as society, happiness, knowledge, and the government. Though some of their opinions differ, there are some similarities in what they represent. There are several characters that oppose each other in the novel but think or act alike. At first, it seems like Captain Beatty, the captain of the firemen, and Guy Montag, the protagonist of Fahrenheit 451, share many of the same opinions about books and morality. However, as Montag struggles to make the right decision, the relationship between the two firemen develops, and there is a more obvious opposition between them. Their thoughts
Missionary Library’s were finally built in Kenya. John took advantage of the free education and spent hours reading there. A problem he faced however was getting inside. He was so determined he waited in line for 2 hours. The library was so packed that each school had a specific day to come in. John has also got up before dawn just to do get inside before the rest of his school could. That’s what I call determination.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, there are many characters that demonstrate heroic qualities. The story is narrated by a young girl named Scout Finch who lives in Maycomb County Alabama in the 1930’s. There is a lot of racial prejudice in Maycomb County and Scout’s father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending a black man named Tom Robinson. In the novel, Atticus, Scout, and Scout’s brother Jem have to overcome many insults and bullying because Atticus is defending a black man. While the trial is going on, Scout and Jem befriend their mysterious neighbor whom they have never even seen. Through this friendship and the trial Scout and Jem are able to open their eyes to the injustices and prejudices of the people of Maycomb. Scout, Atticus, and Tom Robinson are all heroes in the small town of Maycomb.
Webster's dictionary defines courage as "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." According to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (Chapter 11, Page 124) No matter how you define it, Harper Lee definitely portrays the theme of mental courage in this book. The book demonstrates that mental courage is fighting what you believe in no matter the consequence. It is one of the most predominant themes and is shown in many of the characters, including Atticus, Jem and Scout, who all show mental
Second, I believe that the ethos of persistence was developed in the beginning when the gold-seekers decided to come California for a luck. The gold-seekers spent a long and tough journey from their hometown to arrive in San Francisco with nothing and separated with the families indeed. Even though they tried a variety of jobs such as miners, famers and setup their own business to achieve their goal with made certain thousands money to bring home. The miners said, “I must make something” (Rohrough). Even the families or wives to ask for the returning date (Rohrough). They just used different kinds of excuse to delay the returned date to return home because they believed that California still full of opportunity to earn money after many times failures. The gold-seekers didn’t want to give up their efforts, if they returned home without certain amount of money. They felt like how to meet with their families’ expectation. They showed that they really stood firm to stay in California for a long period of time to establish a good outcome.
How to become a happy person, is a really common but mysterious question that many people may have been thinking and struggling about. However, the answers are always simple and ordinary. In the book “Hector and the Search for Happiness”, author Francois Lelord uses a really amiable narrational writing skill to tell audiences the story of the phycologist, Hector gets on a trip of looking for happiness. He travels to China, where his love is cheated by a hooker; later, he asks for advice about what is happiness from a old monk in Tibet; then, it is about the journey to Aftrica, there he encounters the first kidnapping in his life; the end, in Los Angeles, he is free from the regret about his former girlfriend. Overall, he suffers a lot in this lengthy trip, but the final answer he gets are cozy for everyone --- Hector already acquires most types of the happiness in the world!
Chapter 5: Moving forward Inspiration, despite its great powers, is a fickle thing. The mind is just like a muscle — despite learning new skills when practiced daily, it can also be given to bouts of tiredness when used consistently. At this point, inspiration often dies down, no matter how strong it had been. It becomes a mere memory, instead of a powerful force driving you forward. This is why I had asserted two chapters back that forming habits is the surest way to success, and not inspiration.
Courage is strength. Courage is honesty. Courage is standing one’s ground no matter what. Courage is standing up for others. In Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem Finch, along with their father Atticus, live in Maycomb County, a small, mainly racist town in Alabama during the Great Depression. The Finch family’s neighbor, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus display acts of personal courage in the story. Specifically, Mrs. Dubose displays courage in her honesty and strength, and Atticus displays courage in his responses to racism based threats and keeping others safe.
There are a select few things in this world that can bring a grown man to tears and open up a hard heart to experience a variety of emotion. Poetry is one of these rare beauties. Poetry has comforted soldiers on the battlefield and babies in the night. Through vivid imagery and a range of themes and stories, poets have a unique gift to truly create art through words on paper. One poem that highlights this, being full of beautiful imagery, complex mood changes, and valuable themes to remember in life is “Virtue” by George Herbert.
Bill Bradley once said, “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” A strong desire to achieve a goal carves out a path. Staying on the path with persistence takes one to their goal at the end of the path. In the documentary Spellbound, eight kids persist, work and study long hours in an effort to win the 1999 national spelling bee.
