In the books The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, and Of Mice and Men society has a big impact on all of the characters in the book. In The Crucible society would tell people that they could not be a witch, in which religion greatly impacted The Crucible. In The Scarlet Letter, society frowns upon adultery and you can be severely punished for committing such crimes. In Of Mice and Men the men in this book have to be tough. Society didn’t understand guys like Lennie, they just thought Lennie was crazy. All of these books have a completely different society than ours today. The Crucible was set back in the puritan times when society was based around Christianity. They thought anything including witchcraft was sinister. If the church thought someone had anything to do with witchcraft they would put them on trial and most likely they would be hanged, pressed, or even drowned. In today's society someone trying to kill someone over witchcraft would be looked at as a psycho, and a murderer. …show more content…

People would be sent to jail or even put to death over such a unserious matter. Society wouldn’t accept people who had a child when they weren’t married or had an affair. In the book they publicly shamed Hester for committing adultery. Now society is much more accepting of people who may cheat or have a child before marriage. The characters in Of Mice and Men did not understand people like Lennie. They thought he was crazy. People back in this time had to be tough, and they didn’t take anything from anybody. Back then, they would take care of situations themselves. They would not let the law handle any of their problems. Society back then didn’t understand people who were different, like different race, mental state, and so on. They would treat people differently because of this.
